I have to say I'm uh, a bit disheartened... The performance was good, but the skirt was just a teeny bit short. Mariah Carey will be calling Jewel up soon I think... Sorry if I'm a little cynical right now. I kinda thought Jewel wasn't up for all that two inch long stuff. Heh. As always, SNL was absolutely hilarious tonight. The Court Trail skit was totally funny, I couldn't stop cracking up. And although the Gingrich/Clinton skit kinda sucked, Jewel, like usual, was awesome. Wow....Check out that skirt. Anyhow. Jewel sang hands, as expected. The litle gogo dance thing she did kinda disappointed me, but I guess I'll deal with it. I hate to say it, but this is the first time I've really been disappointed by the total style and dress of her. She seemed really trampish and Courtney Love-esque. The song was good, and she sand it real well, but the way she dressed really turned me off to the whole performance. Hearing the song live really brought to light the complete and total "over-production" issue that was discussed earlier. I think she tried to waiver her voice too much, but....... who am I to complain. Talk to ya all later. Hey! I just saw Jewel perform on Saturday Night Live! Well...The first thing I noticed — she danced! Anyone else notice this at all? She was getting into the groove with her legs and things. :) Has Jewel done this before, or is this just for "Spirit"? ;) I thought it was really cool. ^_^ Well...*yawn* Gotta go now. Well I just watched the Jewel performance on SNL and my first thought was....."Who put our Jewel in that god-awful outfit!?!" But.....besides the outfit, the performance was amazing. I especially liked the variation on the part where she sings "I will get down on my knees......." But the best part by far was where she sang "we are reflections of God..." So beautiful...I was completely awed. Well....there's half a cent for you all to ponder upon....::smiles:: Love Hugs and Faerie Dust! Nick, I'm glad you cleared up that you worked at Dairy Queen, I was getting worried that you worked at some government top secret department in which you can actually make Blizzards just by the flip of a switch. If that was the case, man you could make a really hairy winter, hehe. Anyways, to get to the topic of discussion... I'm her new boyfriend. Okay, I'm not, but I would like to find out who he is also... Hey did any EDAs see Jewel on SNL tonight? Man was she good [looking]! She played Hands, and it is so awesome to see her perform, even though she is a couple thousand miles away (I'm in San Diego.) Just great to see her... I'm not sure how this works, but I notice that people put how they are a certain type of angel. Can I just make one up? Rick Dee started to say something about Jewel's new boyfriend or >something. And someone turned on a Blizzard machine (I'm a high >schooler who works at Dairy Queen...go figure!!) and i missed the >whole thing. Sender: owner-jewel@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hello my darling Angels :-) Well I taped Video Hits yesterday (saturday) and they had Jewel's video Hands on it as a new release. The video is sooooooooo good, brings tears to your eyes. The way Jewel looks and how she helps people...it is just so inspirational. The song is just incredible too btw, but ya'll already know that. But the film clip was incredible. Ok and from watching Video Hits for a long time i know that when they do a "new release" they play is each Saturday and Sunday til it gets into the countdown, so be sure to set your vcrs next Saturday or Sunday. And it also had the 20 seconds of Jewel speaking before it came on. Ya remeber how they did it for YWMFM and Foolish Games? "Hi this is Jewel, I've come all the way from Alaska here to Australia just to watch my favorite program, Australia's number one Video Hits. So stick around" She is just such a cutie when she says that. I got my copy of Spirit last night. I have a friend at a record store who gave me their promo copy. Anyway, I've been listening to it and I completely agree with the person who said it was quiet. I was just watching Jewel on Saturday Night Live and "Down So Long" was amazing. I think it's alright on Spirit... that's actually one of the tracks that's "louder". But when she sang it on SNL I was mesmerized. This sort of reminded me of what happened with me with Who Will Save Your Soul. To be perfectly honest, I used to hate WWSYS. I'm not sure why... I just never really listened to it. One day I heard a live version of it and I got shivers. It was awesome how she put so much feeling into it. So that's my 2 cents. - -Jen ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Nov 1998 22:04:57 PST From: "Scott Evans" Subject: My Thoughts On Jewel's SNL Performance I have to start this off by saying that I PRAY the other upcoming Jewel performances aren't anything like Saturday Night Live was...This was possibly the worst Jewel performance I've ever seen...Hands isn't a good "live" song anyway, but her performance of it was terrible (in my opinion, at least)...Maybe if she was actually playing the guitar, she wouldn't be dancing around like a crazy woman (just kidding :o) But she still should have played guitar) Hands was the worst Jewel TV performance I've seen...But I actually really liked Down So Long...I wasn't expecting to like it after Hands, but I did...One complaint though...Jewel should have changed that HORRIBLE outfit...I liked Jewel's old performances much better...Maybe I'm judging too much on one performance, but, oh well...If her upcoming appearances are anything like the SNL Hands I'll just stick to the CD and old angelfood... Scott P.S. Please don't flame me...Remember this is a Jewel discussion list, not a Jewel obsession list...Everyone has a right to their own opinion, and that was mine... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Nov 1998 00:08:40 +0000 From: "Kevin J. Elliott" Subject: Well, I guess I'll jump right in! Hi, I just recently joined this list (yesterday actually) and i thought i'd just jump right in and introduce myself. I'm not really the lurker type. First off, to use a cliche...My name is Kevin J. Elliott and I am a jewel fan. But thank god this isn't a twelve step program because i don't want to be cured. :) My jewel related biography goes a little something like this: The first song i had heard by jewel was "painters" on a local college radio station here in milwaukee. Well, i instantly fell in love with the song and did a little (I stress the word little) digging, thinking she was a local musician. Well, then a few months later, i heard "WWSYS" on the mainstream radio and realized "Hey! that's the same beautiful voice that sang that painters song!" Well, needless to say, i went out and bought the album almost immediately and fell in love with it. Since that day of my purchace of "Pieces of You," I have been waiting for this new album that comes out in 2 days! (filled with anticipation) But in the seemingly forever in between then and now, i have loved and listened to "pieces of you." Unfortunately, i don't have any of the singles or promo discs but trust me that doesn't reflect the respect and admiration i have of Jewel...which i can assure you, is immense. Though I can't say Jewel is my favorite musician, she is one of my favorite artists. Poetry is a huge part of my life. I used to publish a small poetry zine (well, i still do but it's on hold right now because of lack of submissions) and have written poetry since i was 12. When I heard that Jewel was releasing a poetry book, I was waiting (im)patiently to read it. Well, I was very pleasantly surprised when i made my purchase. Her poetry was heartfelt and powerful and it blew me away. And still does when i listen to/read it. One of the major reasons i respect and admire Jewel so much is the fact that her body of work is diverse (and expanding every day). She likes to try different things and it's totally something i can relate with. My artistic passions range from film to poetry, to music, to photography, to etc... and it's incredibly difficult to do all of these things on an amateur level so i just have to respect someone who accomplishes so much on a professional level (and creates such high quality/beauty work) Her spoken word poetry album was just the thing i needed to inspire me to do something i've always wanted to do...record a cd of my own. I recently recorded a spoken word (4 songs, 31 spoken word tracks) CD called 'Mostly Poetry' from the confines of my basement. (info on my web page) If there are any people on this list who have produced their own works.. (poetry, music, art in any form...) I'd be very interested in hearing about it. Well, I've rambled on enough. Hope i didn't bother anyone too much. I hope to become an accepted part of your community and get to know you all better. Sleep well everyone, and have good dreams. -Kevin J. Anyway, I did think that the hands variation at the end was great, hey it caught me off guard! But the best part of the entire show was the courtroom skit! NO I am joking around it is the second song, which a fellow EDA said was Down So Long. Anyway, the fact that she didn't have a guitar in hand during hands was kinda weird. Hope you enjoyed the serious part now here comes the all guy part... - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ - --------------------- JEWEL IN THAT SKIRT!!!! It was no big deal. She's dressed like that before, ever see the Rock Fest 97 performances on MTV or VH1, that was actually a little more skimpier than that. Besides, it's her choice what she wants to wear or not, and I seriously doubt she'll look like that in every upcoming TV appearance. The songs were great I thought. Hands sounded better live than on the radio, but I do wish she did play. And the whole dancing thing, she's always done that just not quite as coordinated. Remember the Letterman where she did FG, she looked kind of funny with some of her body movements and stuff. But that's great, she's just getting into the music. And Down So LOng rocked, I hope it's exactly like that on the album with the scat ending and all. I liked the whole SNL performance very much.
