It really is so much wiser , so much more mature Jewel. The song Jupiter, is really a gorgeous song that i have heard for the first time on BBC radio, a while ago. The whole cd inlay book of Spirit is really something special too, it gives us really a good impression how Jewel wants to share her musical views with us...to be honest i love all the little comments in the cd inlay from Jewel and her praise for her mommy. It gives us the idea how pure and honest Jewel is, and how much she respects her surroundings and that she is an artist that really cares about people. Jewel would be a great peace ambassador in the whole world, nobody could resist her character and personality on the screen. All the tracks with her lovely voice and her lyrics really makes you swallow the moon! some songs really makes much inpact on Human kind that Jewel wrote on my personal title i would say A life uncommon, is one of the truly best along with Barcelona on Spirit. I really long to the Jewelchat coming monday on the NET . I will be there and watch it all... greetings and enjoy Jewel's new cd... michiel http://members.xoom.com/Jewelimpala/index.html a dutch tribute to Jewel - a beautiful angel from alaska *** We are loved beyond our ability to comprehend **** - - Jewel Quote - - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Nov 1998 14:03:17 EST From: Craftykb@aol.com Subject: UK times review I hope this hasn't been posted already but in the London 'Times' today(Friday) there is a nice review of spirit: 'A gem, plain and simple. - -Jewel sparkles with spirit. There are moments when listening to 'Spirit', the follow-up to Jewel's ten million-selling debut, 'Pieces of you', that you realise where everyone else has been going wrong. Recent albums by Alanis Morrisette, Tori Amos, Maddona and even Joni Mitchell have made heavy work of the vogue for turning self-analysis into song. But the 24-year- old Alaskan star converts her most personal feelings into words and music of much greater emotional resonance than her singer-songwriter confreres simply by having the good sense to keep her material focused on the basics. 'What's simple is true' - a pretty, folk-based tune with a lyric that speaks in a universal language - could well be the album's manifesto. There is, too, the engaging sense of an artist who is prepared to seek the solutions to the worries of her world instead of merely cataloguing them. The religious undercurrents of songs such as 'Hands', 'Innocence maintained' and 'Life uncommon' will not be to everyone's liking. "To be forgiven we must first believe in sin," she sternly notes. But her constant cry if optimism in the face of adversity is a welcome antidote to the to the spiritual malaise that nowadays seems to be the norm. Quite apart from the purity and depth of Jewel's vision, though, 'Spirit' is about the pleasure of hearing an unadorned, bell-like voice in the service of good songs. There was a couple of pictures. For other British EDAs there will also be an interview with her in tomorrow's 'Times'. :) Hope everyone had a lucky Friday the 13th :) Katherine ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Nov 1998 14:33:58 -0800 From: Dougster Subject: contest to see jewel on Leno Hey yall godda hurry for this one, if its already been posted sorry i just heard about it, win a free trip to see Jewel live on Jay Leno show go to the site www.104krbe.com and try to win. In Kansas City it's on 107.3 the X. Anyway, Jewel was a call-in guest this morning. One of the guys on the show was interviewing her and asking the usual "How's this album different from the last?" questions and Jewel would answer. I admit she was acting kind of ditzy and girly but I think she was probably just tired of answering the same questions over and over again. After she hung up, everyone in the studio insulted her and called her an idiot and other names. Just wondering if anyone else heard this. Jewel's New Album, Spirit, Materializes in Stores on November 17 FOLLOWING ON THE HEELS of one of pop music?s most successful debut albums ever, Pieces of You, Jewel releases her new effort, Spirit, on November 17 on Atlantic Records. Spirit contains 13 new Jewel originals plus what is labeled as an "additional track," "This Little Bird," a song written by John D. Loudermilk which was also a Top 40 hit in the summer of 1965 for Marianne Faithfull. Naturally, Atlantic Records executives are excited at the prospect of a new Jewel album for the holidays. "There are 14 tracks on this album," Ron Shapiro, Atlantic's Executive VP/General Manager, tells ICE, "and I would proudly and loudly tell you that there are nine singles, without question." Shapiro adds that Jewel is slated for all the big TV programs, including Leno, Letterman and Saturday Night Live, as well as the cover of Rolling Stone's year-end double issue. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Nov 1998 15:21:22 EST From: DmBear978@aol.com Subject: Re:Deep Water >Is it an older song that she has performed before, because it sounded familiar, and I wondered if I heard it in concert before?< Hello everybody, Some alread know this, some don't so here goes. Date: Fri, 13 Nov 1998 21:58:13 +0100 Sender: owner-jewel@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Hi! Well I got the new Jewel album "Spirit" at exactly 4:26 today (I was counting down by the minute at school today!!) and it is THE best album ever made! I am not kidding - it's lovely! Well, I'm gonna write a lot about what I think of it and stuff, and I can't resist but to be the first EDA to properly review the album, so EDA's who don't want their Spirit moment to be spoiled then don't read on! S P O I L E R S P A C E Well, the outside looks great! The cover is what you should all know by now - Jewel resting on her hand with a bit of a glum look on her face, but she still looks as great as ever! The back is a lot different to what I expected. It is plain white with scrawly writing on it, marking which songs there are on the album. Maybe this writing is Jewel's handwriting? Could MrBB or someone clarify this maybe? Anyway, it has this writing and then a qoute - "We are loved beyond our ability to comprehend." As you open it up, the CD is plain white, with "Jewel" and "Spirit" written on it with a picture of a white feather above those. Nice. take the CD out and there's the picture of Jewel's hands which can be seen on the single of Hands. The back of the inlay is shiny and brown and has "Jewel" and "spirit" written on it. The first page has a quote from Plotinus on it (who he?) in a text box, and outside the text box is the quote written in the scrawly writing from the back cover, and a little Jewel sign thing. Page 2 has a brown and white picture of Jewel with her hands together and her hair kinda fuzzy. Page 3 is a pic of Jewel looking sideways in the same top as she wore on the cover of the Hands single. Underneath that is a little thankyou to all of Jewel's fans! It's really sweet, and I'll let you guys read it yourself! Page 4 has another quote - this time from James Allen, and another logo thing, but not of Jewel, it says "Be the difference that makes a difference. You are the difference." Page 5 is a different picture of Jewel's hands again. It's almost the same as the other one. Page 6 is a dedication to Nedra - Jewel's mom and manager. It has a little b+w pic of them laughing together =) A nice page. Page 7 is where the lyrics kick in. Each lyric has a little text box with the name in and outside the box, it's overlapping the title of the song in the scrawly writing again. Right next to each lyrics is the credits for the song - producer, engineer, all that stuff, and who plays on it. Page 7 has Deep Water and What's Simple Is True lyrics. Page 8 is Hands. Page 9 has half of Kiss The Flame, and a picture of Jewel wiping her mouth. Page 10 has the rest of the lyrics to Kiss The Flame and a picture of Jewel's feet (hands, feet - nice! lol... great for all of you with a foot fetish!). Page 11 has the lyrics to Down So Long and Innocence Maintained, page 12 has Jupiter and Fat Boy. Page 13 has Jewel's feet again, behind the lyrics to Enter From The East. Page 14 has the picture of Jewel kind of bending over. It's on the website so you probably has seen it. Page 15 has the lyrics for Barcelona, page 16 has Life Uncommon and Do You? and page 16 has the lyrics to Absence Of Fear (best song on the album!) and a little thing about "This Little Bird" which is sung by Nedra. It also has at the bottom the whole "all songs written by Jewel Kilcher except..." bit and other such credits. The last page - page 17 - has a little more a few more credits, the "Thanks" part, the part with all the addresses and everything to write to and stuff (webpage addy and phone number are included). And that's your lot! Here's a review of the actual album now: 1. Deep Water - I thought this was really good, even though it's spoilt by the fact that it's a bit too slow. If it was faster it would be even better, and probably the best song on the album. 8/10 2. What's Simple Is True (Formerly known as Song For The Winter and Winter Song) - This is really nice, and just floats along nicely =) Her voice really shines in this! 8/10 3. Hands - You all know it, and I hope you all love it! It's exactly the same as the radio version and it sounds really nice when it's surrounded by all the other tracks =) 10/10 4. Kiss The Flame - She goes high on this one! Just like how she does it live - it's lovely. It hasn't got all that much production on it and it's nice. 8/10 5. Down So Long - One of my favorite album tracks! It's the most fun track on the album, and sounds kinda kooky (in a "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone" kinda way). It's one of the 3 best tracks on the album and it's just cool. 11/10 6. Innocence Maintained - slower than I (and most of us) originally heard it. It sounds better faster (like Deep Water does) so that takes away from how I look at it. It is still a great song. 8/10 7. Jupiter - This is lovely. "oh-oh, oh-oh!" hehe. It's cool. Has great lyrics and is really catchy, especially considering how slow it is. 9/10 8. Fat Boy - What can I say? One of my favorite Jewel songs of all time and one of the big 3 on the album. It is just the best. I can't say anything more. I just really really love this song! 11/10 9. Enter From The East - Euro-EDAs with the Hands single will think this sounds exactly the same as the Accoustic Version, but it isn't! A cello kicks in during the song and it goes so well into it! Makes it sound so much better! and her voice goes high again! Yay! 9/10 10. Barcelona - A Haunting ballad! With Flea On Bass! Rejoice! Hehe, I didn't like it too much. The I heard the "Let me fly" part and I was totally in love. Beautiful. 9/10 11. Life Uncommon - Should really have been called Sounds Of Freedom. It is a really nice song and I think that it sounds great, especially since it's a tribute to one of my favorite songs of all time - Redemption Song. 10/10 12. Do You? - It is nice. But that's all. Nothing special about it or anything. It's a sweet song, and it has "ride with the devil" said in it which *is* the title of the film, so it's gotta be good eh? Hehe. It's nice. 7/10 13. Absence Of Fear - The Foolish Games of the album. It is a lot different from the versions I've heard live, and a lot better! It has the piano of Foolish Games, the great lyrics of YWMFM and everything else you could want from a Jewel song. the best song on the album! 12/10. Additional track - This Little Bird - this is an a capella lullaby song sung by Nedra and it's lovely. She sings it beautifully and Jewel's harmonising just makes it (almost) perfect. If it was all sang by Jewel it would probably be one of the best songs on the album. It's a bit scary at the end when the little bird dies! Awwww. 7/10 I will be putting up a webpage soon with all the pictures from the album inlay soon. It's going to be called "Jewel's Spirit" and hopefully I'll start a pretty good webpage! I hope some of you read this - mail ME your opinions, because I don't want to spoil the album experience for anyone who doesn't want it spoilt! Thanks!
