There was a couple of posts recently about "Lasciatemi morire". I've been away for a few weeks and have just been catching up on a host of Jewel digests, which is why I'm only now responding and adding a bit about "Hands". When I heard "Lasciatemi morire" on Future Folklore III I thought it was beautiful, even though a bit of it didn't make sense. The recent posts got me off my backside to go and check out the words. I found that Jewel had got a bit mixed up. The words are: Lasciatemi morire, lasciatemi morire, e chi volete voi che mi conforte in cosi dura sorte, in cosi gran martire. Lasciatemi morire, lasciatemi morire. Repeated. Very roughly, this means: Let me die, let me die. Who wants to console me in such a bitter (lit. hard) fate, in such a great torment? Let me die, let me die. But Jewel seems to sing, instead of "in cosi dura sorte", "in cosi gran ra sorte", which doesn't make sense. Anyway, the point is that even though it did not make sense 100 per cent, it still sounded lovely. And the same goes for "Hands". The sound is beautiful but the meaning seems to get confused at the end (or maybe Jewel is being deliberately ambiguous, or even somewhat ironic?). The song to me is one of affirmation and defiance in the face of any adversity: with these our own small hands we can do what needs to be done and we will not be broken. But then Jewel gets down on her knees, in the symbolic gesture of submission, subjection, subservience, of being broken by the will of another!? And she prays. From other songs (for example, "Innocence Maintained" and "Been Down So Long") we know that prayer is to ourselves and to each other, just as faith is in ourselves and in each other and the innate goodness (innocence/"godliness") of human beings. Only we can answer our prayers and each other's prayers. Then Jewel ends with "We are God's eyes, God's hands . . .". Not our own hands? There are to my mind three ways of interpreting this ending. First, we are God's hands, that is, God's instruments, and we carry out His will. I've just finished reading a book on Attila, king of the Huns. The Church called him the Scourge of God and said the death and destruction he wrought was God's will, God's punishment for sinful souls. And Attila was no worse than the holy Crusaders who murdered, raped and pillaged their way across eastern Europe and the Middle East, doing God's will. The victims should rejoice in their suffering and accept it as all part of God's plan! Read St Augustine on predestination too. I can't believe Jewel meant that. The second interpretation is the mystical one. We and God are one and indivisible: God is us and we are God. That's a definite possibility, if you believe in God. Or, is Jewel saying that, just as we are the only ones who answer our own prayers and each other's prayers, we are the only god/God there is? That would be my guess. Sorry for raving on so long, but I've just got the single and love all three songs. Jewel is so restrained, controlled, focused and so much more mature. She just sounds better and better, even if her ideas do get a bit fuzzy at times (but probably not as fuzzy as mine). Take care, Barry Howarth "I fear I may wither with forgetfulness so I pull these pages close about my ears, tiny leafy limbs, pale with impression, my pen a single flame to keep me warm, like a beacon holding memory, until I am able to go back to my lovely mountains or until I am strong enough to bring their essence to the rest of these hungry people who long to remember the simplicity which lies beyond the city's inbred streets and the godliness that resides in us all." The ending of "As a child I walked" that was cut out of ANWA. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Nov 1998 20:02:07 EST From: MAXMOUZE@aol.com Subject: Re: Lasciatemi morire and Hands In a message dated 11/10/98 4:58:52 PM Pacific Standard Time, blh301@coombs.anu.edu.au writes: << There are to my mind three ways of interpreting this ending. >> Jewel hsa said before the same quote and explained what it meant. There are a lot of creatures of God's but we are the only ones with hands. We're supposed to use them for good, to take care of the Earth and carry out God's work. God can't come to Earth and make sure it is well so he sent his sons and daughters to be his hands, his heart, his eyes. - -- Mark ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Nov 1998 20:04:39 -0500 From: Dominique Subject: Jewel in Teen Tribute hi guys Just found a little review of ANWA in Teen Tribute. The title is "she sings... she acts... she writes..." and it says: "Jewel has always used poetry to save her soul and wishes other young people would do the same. "I think something that really holds kids back is they're not encouraged when they're young to articulate emotion," says the 23-year-old folk/pop star. "Her debut collection of poems, A Night Without Armor (HarperCollins), captures poignant observations about love, lust, hardship, humanity, insecurities and intimavies. Her readings of the poems, available on a 70-minute album, bring out "the voice"- laying bare the meaning of her words. ""When I was a kid, if somebody had told me to sit down and write a poem the world would have to see, I would've been extremely nervous," she says. "I never would've done it." "Jewel stresses that she never wrote poetry with the view to get published. Her earliest writings have been discarded and are now long gone. It wasn't until she was 15 that she started keeping the entries. Some of this early work is included in the 109-poem tome. ""Poetry is such a large influence in my life and in my writing and in my development as a human," she says. "I think kids will like poetry if they get encouraged to do it."" I think it's a pretty nice article. :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Nov 1998 17:56:39 -0500 From: angelfoodcake84@juno.com (alexandra l phillips) Subject: Hands Stills If you would like some hands still or a clip of hands please e mail me. thanks ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Nov 1998 22:06:54 EST From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: MrBB-JEWEL DAILY MEDIA UPDATE 11/10/98 - --Thursday, Nov. 12th-Good Morning America,(7 to 9 am EST) This is NOT live & the date is subject to change. It was put out last year. The second track is a four second holiday greeting. I've dealt with eil before. They are a good company. They deliver fast, and always have good selection. But as you said they are extremely overpriced. I bought a copy of YWMFM promo w/ the Juan Patino version from them. I would have gone somewhere else, but it was the only place I could find it. I guess selection costs money. :) One week til "Spirit"! Kisses! Julie "There's nothing like poverty to get you into heaven.
