Adia ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Nov 1998 01:02:26 -0600 (CST) From: Jay Christoph Johnson Subject: Hands video: Jewel as an everyday angel I just saw the video for "Hands" again on VH1, and due to the post that someone else (I'm sorry, I can't remember who) that suggested that it could be interpreted that Jewel was being portrayed as an angel (as in like a divine being of some sort that wasn't there in a corporal sense), and I dawned on another possible meaning. Now, when I first heard the angel idea, I disagreed (or more aptly, I didn't embrace that interpretation, since there is no "wrong" meaning when viewing art). I didn't think that Jewel would deify herself, due to previous statements that she had made about not wanting people to idolize her. Well, with those thoughts running through the back of my mind, I saw the video again, and I realized that she could in fact be trying to show how a person can be an "everyday angel". She was just driving down the road, maybe a little bummed because it was raining, and thus she couldn't go out horseriding (or maybe happy because rain gives a sense of renewal and life), who knows. Anyways, she sees the site of a recent disaster (I personally believe it is an explosion), so she decides to get out of the car and help people, both physically (by helping remove the debris to free the man trapped in the basement), spiritually (by praying for the victims), and emotionally (by comforting the children and taking them to their parents. Thus, even though "her hands were small" and she couldn't possibly help everyone, instead of giving up and driving on, she stopped and did what she could. Or at least that is one way I saw it. and hey, have a great day, everyday!!! Well, all I have to say about Jewel in Spain, is that it seems like she wasn't here for 2 days. I recorded all live TV shows from both days, listen hours and hours of radio shows and that's what I found about her. >From tv: Nothing. She wasn't in anyone of the live shows that I recorded. I've been watching the no-live TV shows with have interviews and musical interpretations from those days, but NOTHING!!!. I tried all I could, I phoned them but anyone knows nothing, emailed them, but did received any reply,... >From Radio: In Radio3. They aired "Innocence Maintained" and told when the CD will be out. It was on Monday, the first day she was in Spain. I phoned them, but they didn't know that Jewel was in Spain. In Cadena 100: Jewel was recording a radio interview (I don't know if she sang) with Carlos Finali the first day. The program name is "Los especiales de Cadena 100", and it's only on Sunday. The first Sunday before she was here the aired a interview with Robin Williams, and today with a Spanish singer. I hope next one will be the one, in part because it's one day before the new CD will be in stores. They aired sometimes a Jewel recorded message: "Hi!, this is Jewel, and you're listening to cadena 100". >From Newspapers: Nothing. I look all the national Newspapers during these days, and the weekend ones, but nothing. And THAT'S ALL. I'm still waiting to see what she recorded here in Spain. Hope next week with the new album out, all she supposedly recorded here will be aired, of course if they did do it and I missed it.
