[STAC5984@aol.com] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 23 Oct 1998 02:13:40 -0300 (ADT) From: Jesse A McDonald Subject: Hands NO-ONE has complained that Jewel changed - PER SE. It is not the fact that Jewel's present sound (ie the sound of Hands) barely resembles her previous sound (the sound of POY or even other non-POY) that bothers me or anyone else I've heard from. It is the new sound itself. I hate the trappings of top 40 radio fodder. I don't hate Jewel, I don't hate Patrick Leonard, I don't hate Hands, I hate the overall sound that Hands has. I'm disappointed because this song seems like less than I was hoping for, not because it isn't what I expected. So please, everyone, no more posts in defense of change - change is okay and we all know it. Okay, forget tape three for now! I was getting ahead of myself even mentioning it, let's concentrate on TAPE TWO! Right on! Prominent list member Mark Oxman needs your help to pull this project off... we need list members to participate! How? With MUSIC! So if you are: (a) an EDA (b) a musician then there's a place for YOU on this tape! Just pound out your own distinctive version of any Jewel song (that's a song that Jewel wrote, not Have A Little Faith In Me or Sunshine Superman or Chime Bells or Yo or Rudolph the Red Nosed Raindeer or Somewhere Over The Rainbow but it doesn't have to be on POY either), record that song on a TAPE (as high quality as you can) and mail that sucker to Mark's house! ACTUALLY, I'm missing a step, the first thing you should do is email Mark and tell him what song you want to cover. His email addy is MAXMOUZE@aol.com and he'll let you know what you need to know... where to send the tape to, for example. don't delay! Get involved! Yes! Oh, and it's been brought to my attention that some people don't want to participate becase they're too self conscious... I know what that feels like, I can't sing to save my life... but maybe I'm insane, because I really want you all to hear my electronic/acoustic cover of Adrian... trust me, you sing better than I do. ^_^ So c'mon now, musicians... rock the world! This tape is going to be available to all EDAs... and that's a good thing! | Jesse Dangerously http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~ad309 | subterranean seraph 16 Trust Everyone | ad309@chebucto.ns.ca Ekam Sat, Viprah Bahudha Vadanti | ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Oct 1998 23:07:42 -0700 From: "Adrian du Plessis" Subject: EDA spirit and fun in bumper stickers and things I remember when the guitar picks idea was first raised and then it became a reality; EDAs decided on what image, words, colour; it just takes some organization and EDAs willing to do it; Jesse said, in reference to an EDA compilation tape that "such a project might be able to bring a relative newcomer such as myself closer to understanding the closeness that I seem to have arrived just a little too late to catch... "; I hope it's never too late to catch that closeness, it's there whenever you attend a Living Room Tour show, or share feelings and dreams with the EDA friends you've made on-line, and it's there whenever this list gets together and creates something like the guitar picks, or the bumper stickers and other things that are being talked about now; this is the fun side of those acts of kindness that are manifest in helping others in any way we can each day; but back to practical things, I remember Mandy in Pennsylvania, I think (one of three Mandys on the list at the time), knowing someone (her Dad?) who had a music shop and could order guitar picks; (I suppose they still have the template or whatever so we could find out about getting more EDA picks made, that's one idea that I know is always popular); is there anyone on this list who knows someone who makes bumper stickers or the other things being talked about?; if not, it's not hard to make phone calls and see who makes them and compare costs and all that; and then EDAs can put in their own $0.02 ($0.03 if you're Canadian like me, international currencies, well, everyone can input their views whatever they're worth :); then we'd all decide on the words or image (e.g. "hands manifest thought", "...only kindness matters") whatever inspirations people have; then a few EDAs gather up everyone's input and turn it into reality; then, like with the guitar picks, some agrees to be the U.S. distributor, the Canadian distributor, the international and it all works with a group effort; hey, it's our world and life, so anything's possible! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Oct 1998 11:29:02 EDT From: CHERuBUG2@aol.com Subject: Jewel in Spin Jewel is part of "The Third Annual Platinum Seller Derby Cup Classic" on page 42 of Spin Basically talks about her new album "Pop-folk's comeliest Alaskan sings the body electric. I love it! But... I don't speak Italian! So I've been knocking myself out on Yahoo and Alta Vista, trying to find out anything about it... all I've been able to find out is that it's Italian, and that it's a song sung by Jewel. (Yeah, that was an hour well spent.) I tried checking CD Now, barnesandnoble.com, and amazon.com to see if I could find any reference... I know the song had to come from somewhere, right? No luck. So, I'm begging for help... can someone... ANYone... at least point me in the right direction? Please e-mail me.... Don't get me wrong I love the song, but the video is really really bad....first of all if you watch closely Jewel isn't that great at lip syncing (*AHEM* :::whispers::: last year's superbowl...) and she looks so young. I just havea couple of things to say. 1) i really like the ID card idea, especially since the idea of kind of an "inside joke that a lot of people know about" came up as an ascociation to that. its kinda nifty, i think. the only thing bad i can think of is the cost. unless..... AH! idea! (im kinda just writting as the thoughts come, so bear with me, my best ideas come out that way). You don't have to get the card if you don't want it, and if you DO want it, you could order it or something. it could be at cost, and it would pay for itself that way! great idea, ain't it? told you i get my best ideas when i make them up as i go along! ;) 2) in regard to Shane's letter about change in Jewel's music, and how we all change: RIGHT ON! i personally am proof that people change. actually, for me, i changed over night. earlier this week, i was all thinking about how horrible life was, and maybe i could take my money (a measely 200 bucks) and just skip town for 4 years. now, im thinking about how much fun life is. so, that is my testament to how people can change. 3) i put this on the end, just in case ppl wanted to just skip over the hands post. The other day, i was working, and i had JUST turned the radio on. guess what was on. [insert guess here] wrong. it wasnt hands, it was a commercial for Gator.net , a local internet service provider. then came an ad for Circut City, and some sale at the mall. But after i got started working (i stuff the weekly newsletter at church)(yes, i do get paid for it), "Hands" came on. At first, i just ignored the song, b/c i didnt know it was Jewel. it was so, different from what else i've heard. but then (thanx whoever posted the lyrics!) i recognized part of the lyrics, and i just slowed down my pace, and really listened. then i got to thinking (yes, it hurt a lot. haha), how approiate. here i am, working with my "Hands", and boom, the first song to come on is "Hands". i thought it was neat. Well, i've bored you all enough, so C-YA!
