About Jewel selling out, I don't really know how people can make that judgement by hearing just one song from Spirit, but by saying that they don't like Hands and that it's overproduced, all they are doing is stating their opinion, and I don't see anything wrong with that. There is also another debate I see, "loyalists" vs. "defectors". I've been on the ENYA listserv for about a year, I'm also a member of the Alanis Morissette listserv. I've seen this exact thread about 6 months ago when Enya came out with her "Only If" single and then "Paint The Sky with Stars" album. Over on the Alanis front almost the same discussion ensues over the new "Thank U" single and the new album (first in three years) "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie" are being critiqued. Both examples parallel the "Hands" single, "Spirit" album scenario (much awaited album after long time-period between releases). With all three artists, talk has been made about "selling out", becoming to "pop", in general moving away from the status quo music that has originally made them popular. Others on the list come to the artists defense, pointing out the artist needs to "grow", "explore new styles and sounds", others verbally attack those on the list that voice disapproval or dislike. There are always the veritable Rodney King types who just wish we could all get along, I suppose I might be classified as one. The temptation is great to almost deify the artist instead of admire her and her work. Any dissent for her work is anathema... unorthodox, if you will. I consider Jewel and Enya to be very rich, deep, talented artists. I think we are drawn especially close to them unlike fad crazed worship of a pop-star performer (need I cite examples?). Jewel's music draws you in, it's lyrical, beautiful, realistic and it speaks to us. We listen to her music with our hearts and our souls, not our ears. Her music does, however, make us think, ponder, and deliberate weighty matters of conscience and life. Rather than engaging in conversation, we could easily fall into the rut and the list could host an array of factions at war, or possibly turn into a boring "voting booth" on which songs I like and which ones I don't. Don't take things so seriously. She's wonderful, her music and lyrics are wonderful, but there's more to life. I like what Sean said "Change CAN be good. Change CAN be bad" (citing examples of Bob D.) I think this is the kind of attitude to be adopted. Jewel is the one writing the music, making the deals, signing the contracts, putting on the concerts, so lets leave her to it instead of banging our heads against the wall when she does something contrary to our opinion. kudos to Richard who said it doesn't matter. "Jewel is jewel and we are we. it's completely up to her." I am very passionate about the music I like, but I also try to listen and learn when discussing that music with others, I've found that holding a flawed point of view merely for sake of pride is silly.
