For the >rest of the world, she has to become a full-fledged performer and lose the >folk music and become a pop artist. Why? Why isn't folk music just as valid, because it's not commercially successful? If she changes her music to accommodate what the drooling, slack-jawed masses want to hear, then she is a sell-out (which, IMO, hasn't happened yet, even if I don't like how Hands sounds). I look forward to her further musical evolution, for better or worse, but if she creates songs not to express herself but to satisfy the fleeting whims of Top 40 radio, she, IMO, will have surrendered the title of "Artist" and reduced herself to a mere commodity. I really don't care if she starts performing some unnatural amalgam of Gregorian Chants and Ganxta Rap, as long as it's what SHE feels is an expression of herself, and not created as a "product" designed specifically for mass-consumption. I couldn't agree more. When I first Joined the Jewel List like 6 months ago I did a post right away, I was sooooo excited to be on the list and be an official EDA. Which now in my opinion doesn't seem to mean as much as it used to. But anyway in my first post I stated how much I liked Jewel and how long I had been collecting her work and so on. But what surprised me was that the next day I received nothing but "hate" mail back, well one good message, but still for saying how much I liked Jewel and I got messages back saying I was a hypocrite and that I was self centered, blah blah blah. Needless to say I hadn't posted again until now because I felt I didn't need to get anymore "hate" mail from the people the supposed enjoy the same things I do. I have been depressed enough lately with the loss of my girlfriend and all. We need to stop yelling at each other over the list. Mom always said, "if you dont have anything nice to say, dont say anything at all." Because as we all know, "In the end only Kindness matters." I am sorry I had to say all that, it is just that I needed to get that out there, and this seems like the right opportunity. If you have anything to say to me about this, email me privately. But please dont be cruel, I am not trying to say anything to offend anyone here. It's really the principle of things that's important; and when one EDA insists "You people keep missing the point" in their absolute self-importance they are not recognizing that others here have valid opinions and knowledge -- but are falsely stating that these others are wrong or are "missing the point" for not bowing to such wisdom as they hold. I've heard the single hands and I just have to express my love for it. I love it sooo much. It toched me so much. I've been reading all the comments you guys have been making on the song and the supposed change of Jewel. Well I feel that change is alright (though I personally do not think Jewel has changed). Here is a quote of something she recently made on the WB's special: Seventeen Faces of the Fall. When talking about her new CD and songs she said "These ones show who I am. What I want to say to the world. It think it is more focused." And I personally think that the music used to reflect Jewel's lyrics for Hands is perfect. It moves me soo much. Here's a a brief quote from the song "If i could tell the world just one thing it would be, we're all ok. And not to worry cause worry is wasteful. And useless in times like these. I won't be made useless." See the point I'm trying to make? THIS IS JEWEL! This is what she wants to say. This CD is HER. Just had to get that off my chest. I'll throw another grenade in the pot and say that I disagree with Sean. My belief is that "Change is inevitable, but growth is optional." Everything changes in time, but it's up to you to decide if you adapt or grow with each challenge and situation. So change can be interesting and the growth a person experiences interesting as well. But as far as truths, change happens and it's up to you if you grow to meet the new situations. :) Albert == Albert Wang Dark Seraph bahamude@user1.channel1.com Jewel Quotes and QTs http://hugse1.harvard.edu/~wangal/jewel.html Tara MacLean Gallery http://hugse1.harvard.edu/~wangal/tara.html _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? As MrBB has posted twice (at least) in the last two weeks, there are presently NO plans at all to release a single of Hands in the USA nor Canada. (this of course could change in the future....it wouldn't surprise me if they did release one later, and it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't....no one knows at this point) However, this probably does NOT mean you won't be able to buy a single of it on (in?) North America!! :-) In the past, stores like Borders and Circuit City (especially Circuit City!!) have carried foreign CD singles of Who Will Save Your Soul, You Were Meant For Me and Foolish Games. In all three cases they had 2 extra B-side singles that were NOT on the CD version of Pieces of You. They were $9.99 at my local Circuit City. Also, there is absolutely no question in my mind that you will be able to buy it online at a place like CDNow at http://www.cdnow.com Be aware, that MrBB also posted, "singles in various International markets, they may have extra live cuts exclusive to the country of release". As I read it and have discussed with him on the phone, it appears likely that this will be the case....so a single of Hands released in England will probably have a different live song or a different version of a live song as would, say Singapore. (I guess it looks like the collectors will be going bonkers trying to get all of the different versions :-) Lastly, one thing to point out and to request. I implore all of you to read each and every post by MrBB (ABershaw@aol.com) when his posts' subjects begin with "MrBB". He gets timely and advance news about Jewel directly from her management and it'll save you all time from posting questions to the list that he just recently posted. For example, late last week he mentioned that Jewel would NOT be touring in the USA for the rest of 1998, yet I've gotten at least a half a dozen posts sent to Jewel@smoe.org asking about "any Jewel touring soon?...anyone know" etc. Rather than send them on to the list, I've answer them privately. Situations like this (posting questions JUST answered on the list) happen much too often. Mike - Jewel list manager :-) P.S. Because most of you sound like you know her pretty darn well, I'm jealous! :( Maybe we could all send in our stories and make a book called "When I Met Jewel". Was there a private meeting or something where Jewel sat down and told some of you she had decided to "sell out" and make a lot of money on an album that she didn't care about? I guess I missed that one, dang it! I unfortunately only know Jewel through her poetry, interviews, and music. Gee, am I missing out on something here or what?
