Comparing Jewel's new song "Hands" to the '66 Dylan concert in Manchester IS ludicrous, which is why I didn't do that. I merely commented that there are lessons to be learned there. I'm afraid that it's you that keeps missing the point, which is why I wrote my post to begin with. What I was comparing was the reaction to Dylan's breaking new ground by his supposed fans and the reactions that I've been reading on this list to an album that hasn't been released yet. It seems to me, Sean, that "thou doth protest too much." >Just had to disparage this afwul analogy between the Dylan >Manchester show and the discussion we have been having about Jewel. Excuse me. I'll keep my mouth shut like I have for the last year so as to not incur the wrath of authorities such as yourself on the subject of artistic integrity. By the way, I'd like to hear your next CD. Send it to Desolation Row. Dakota Kane ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Oct 1998 22:35:56 -0400 From: "Willms, Gregory J." Subject: RE: "Bob Dylan Live 1966" and Jewel's album "Spirit" How has this turned into what it has become? Are so many people so stubborn and unyielding that they can't just accept that someone has a different opinion and let them be? Why must everyone take offense when someone voices their opinion that's different? No one here is right, and no one is wrong. These are OPINIONS. Is everyone so self-concious that they feel that they have to defend themselves every time someone counters them? Can't you just say, "OK, that's their opinion", and end it there? No one is trying to piss everyone off. Personally, I just want people to THINK about what I have to say, maybe ponder it for a while, and then move on. I'm not trying to incite flame wars, and I don't think anyone else is either. Just accept the fact that everyone thinks differently, and *most* people have opinions worth listening to, even if you don't agree. You'd be amazed at what you can learn about people just by listening and understanding. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Oct 1998 23:06:00 EDT From: TweakNose@aol.com Subject: random thing having to do with hands Hey EDAs!!! I never really send out messages to the list but I have something kinda odd having to do with Hands. My girlfriends always make fun of me because I have really big hands for a girl. It didn't help that the Jerry's girlfriend with the "man hands" on Seinfeld's name was Gillian(my namesake.) Now that my all time fav artist's new single is called Hands, they have something more to crack on me about. Oh well, it's alll worth it because Hands is awesome. OK, maybe in a few months or so I will decide to send another message.... There is a difference between SELLING OUT and BLOSSOMING. - -- Mark ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Oct 1998 20:56:32 PDT From: "Bruce Keezer" Subject: the sellout ballyhoo Hi. There are those of you who may not know me on the list. Probably because I've been a member for less than 2 days now. I'll just give a quick intro. My name is Bruce Keezer. And I have a self-proclaimed obsession with Jewel. I've read her poetry and know what she thinks about that, but I still can't help myself. But the real point about writing this is to address some of the issues mentioned in the few postings to the list I've read. Namely, Jewel's ever-rising popularity and the validity of her upcoming release, Spirit. Well, I for one am excited about it, but it appears that some aren't. I've heard the new single, Hands. I've only heard it once, and because my awe over the fact that there was actually new Jewel on the radio, I wasn't really able to ponder it's deeper meanings as I've been able to do with the songs on Pieces of You. I believe that the new single is a great song. And it isn't "typical" Jewel, whatever that is. I would agree with most who prefer her songs that have the acoustic touch. While I like hearing her sing, and hearing the raw emotion of her voice, Hands is a little more restrained, a little more mature. It's a little too pop for my taste, and while I know I'll eventually enjoy it like I do every song on PoY, it will never be my favorite. And for those worrying about whether or not the rest of the album will be like that, don't. It's not in her character. The Jewel I know could not restrict her diverse talents to one type of song. She is maturing. I read messages from people comparing it to the evolution of Madonna, U2, REM, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Metallica. (Being a Metallica fan, I just have to say that their new music far surpasses their old at almost every level.) Growth and maturity are about going where life leads, following the natural progression of things. I am extremely excited to see where this will lead Jewel's music. But remember, even if her experimentation turns out to be the most horrible thing anyone has ever done in the history of music, she can go back. If she grows to a point where she isn't happy with something, it is not impossible to go back where she came from. And Jewel? A sellout? Not by a long shot. I've never met the woman, but from all I've seen and heard of her, she has far too much integrity for that. And I've just realized, I'm rambling. I do that too often. But that's my humble opinion, and I'm sticking to it. I think "Hands" is a good song and a good way to symbolize Jewel's talent. So what the hell is the problem?! I think this thread began when someone said "What if the album makes people think Jewel sold out?" etc. Well let's wait till the album comes out. We're already arguing about something which we haven't even dealt with. For now, let's talk about something interesting -- perhaps it won't focus on "Hands" in any way shape and form 'cause that song has been overkilled by us and it's not even a popular song yet. - -- Mark ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #555 ***************************
