I assume this also applies to Borders, which is the other major bookchain carrying it. Look for it in the "gift section" of these stores (with other blank books) as apposed to with ANWA, music biographies, etc. Thanks Sabra & I hope that helps a few more of you who've been unable to find its location in the stores. Hi again, I checked on this & Kristen is correct. Borders books do have copies of this & so does Barnes & Noble now. They probably do not stock it with other music books or biographies since it doesn't fit in those categories, so ask a salesperson to assist you if needed. In the case that they don't have it in stock, either of these mega-book chains can probably order a copy for you locally. For identification purposes, this is the "Jewel Edition of the Rhino Journal" made by Running Rhino & Co. And of course its always available at the Jewel Store at her website (http://www.jeweljk.com/). I hope thats helpful. I made an offer at the end of my last post to make a copy of Rare Angels, Radio Angels, and/or Future Folklore 3 for anyone who sends me blanks and return postage, and I got no responses. I figured I'd mention it one more time, since my offer was posted in the midst of the unmoderated chaos. Maybe everyone already has these shows? I haven't copied them for anyone since I got them from the Angelfood bank, and would like to. Write me for details if you're interested. I am not really interested in trading for other Angelfood, except the 9/29/96 show from Marist College, if it exists. I will trade for other musicians, though. So i am a very happy angel right now, i don't know when i will get this one, but i think within a couple of days......-))) real fans deserves sometimes a special treatment ! *LOL* and in this case i am the lucky fellow and fan of Jewel in holland!!! greetings, michiel http://members.xoom.com/Jewelimpala/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Oct 1998 11:24:50 -0700 From: "Wizard" Subject: Again, with the Production Howdy Dowdy Boys & Girls! I'm not even going to bother touching the production value of Hands, it's a futile effort. However, there is a running idea being espoused by many who like the sound of Hands that disturbs me. There seems to be an attitude of "now that Jewel has a *good* producer, everything will be fine." An extension of this thought is that is that POY was made on a shoestring budget, and now due to her overwhelming success Atlantic is pouring tons of cash into the new album; following this train of thought to the conclusion of: MORE MONEY = BETTER ALBUM. Now, I'm sure it's true Atlantic is making a bigger investment this time around - she's a proven artist and Atlantic has a substantially lessened risk than they did with POY. However, POY wasn't exactly recorded on a creaky reel-to-reel in a funky hotel room ala Robert Johnson. They put her in a **righteous** studio with some of the hottest session players on the planet - not exactly a cheap affair. As far as a not having a "good" producer, nothing could be farther from the truth. I will not impugn Patrick Leonard's abilities, he certainly has his credentials in order. But anyone who thinks Ben Keith is subpar as a producer needs some schooling! He's not exactly some derelict who wandered into the studio while looking for a warm grate to sleep on, and had somebody sit him down at the boards. He has played with the Stray Gators (the aforementioned session players) since the early 70's, is a multi-instrumentalist extrordinare, has been a session player on approximately 1/2 of the album's Neil Young has recorded, and has also produced several of Neil's albums. The production of POY was indeed sparse, but this is not a reflection of lack of ability on the part of Mr. Keith - on the contrary, a less skilled producer may have cluttered the album with technical tricks and obtrusive layering. There's more to recording an album than pressing the "Record" button. It's a difficult task to translate the emotive qualities of music from a live performance to a recording, and come out with something that accurately portrays the artist. Any pimp from a New Orleans whorehouse can operate a soundboard, but it takes genuine talent to capture the *essence* of a performer. Ben Keith clearly has an understanding that sometimes, More Is Less. This co-produced song of Jewel and Patrick Leonard is heading for a good succes in Holland. We hear the song more and more on the radio, and i will think this song will make Jewel even more populair in Holland. The Dutch Teletext is reporting the following about Spirit , Jewel's second album in Holland . The dutch relaesedate is be set for 13th of November 1998 (that's a friday). It's the succesfull followup of her first cd Pieces Of You. As we all know the cd will have 13 to 14 tracks. They are all written by Jewel with exception of the song Hands, which i love by the way tremendously. We all do, i guess and know for sure. As a remarkable fact they announce teh co-operation of Jewel and Flea , The Red Hot Chili Peper bassist. who is playing along with Jewel on the lovely track Barcelona. This is all i can report from a dutch/european point of view according to the long awaited new album of my most loved artist Jewel. So it;s definitely good news, to know that i just have 29 days to count to collect this record together with all my records i own of Jewel. greetings, michiel the dutch angel ,who rates Spirit to be more succesfull than Pieces of You of lovely Jewel. http://members.xoom.com/Jewelimpala/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Oct 1998 16:45:36 EDT From: Krz4catz@aol.com Subject: HANDS Hey everyone! Hi peeps, I just wanted to make a few comments here in response to a few posts that have come through. but please, don't anyone call her a sellout or fake, because you can't know what jewel kilcher, age 16, dreamed about when she dreamed about music. This is exactly right. We don't know what her ultimate dream of music making is. Maybe "Spirit" is it. Maybe "Hands" is only a small sampling of what is yet to come. So what if it's more produced than POY? Why is that bad? Nobody has come up with a valid reason. Maybe it DID come from Jewel's soul, deep down. Personally, "Hands" makes me all shivery and smiley. It really touches me more than a Jewel song has in a while. More so than many EDA favorites like Race Car Driver, Carnivore, etc. "Hands" touches me much the same way as "A Thousand Miles Away". Just because a few haven't felt a flash of lightning from it doesn't mean it wasn't written from the heart for all intents and purposes! And alot of people HAVE said she is selling out... I've read several posts that have said that. From another post... Sure it's FINE, but it's beside the point. I'm not caught up in catchy, top-40 style musicianship. I want to be made to CRY. Well as little as I like this progression in Jewel's sound, it's not making me cry. Sounds like a personal problem to me. I myself like songs that move me and make me feel good. I don't want to cry. But maybe that's just me. I dunno. And maybe some people are more into different music (different than the alleged top-40 style), and don't like what's popular. But hey, that's YOUR thing. If Jewel has another "thing" in mind, than that's up to her. I'm not saying other opinions are invalid. It's okay to have a gripe about something that Jewel has done. Not everyone is going to agree all the time. But honestly, I don't understand why so many are getting antsy about "Spirit" because they're afraid it won't fit their personal tastes. Myself, I like to see Jewel experiment and try out different stuff. Under The Water for example. A classic. Jewel rapping is something fresh and different! Why's everyone so fearful of change, when it's really such a GREAT thing?!?! Nobody's heard "Spirit" yet - except Mr. BB - so let's not jump to conclusions. I don't like every Jewel song (Nicotine Love, blech, ewww :) ), but I'm sure that this new album is really going to blow all of us away! If it's even HALF as good as "Hands", it's gonna get worn out in MY CD player! Even if it's completely different, I'm gonna give it a chance. But I'm completely POSITIVE that I'm going to like it. The "theme" itself is enough to sell me on it. Anywayz, this ain't a flaming, just my pushy opinion again.. :) Keep smiling, Ryan The jagged little angel "(Jewel)'s a flower that grows despite cement walls, and she will survive..." -Jewel - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ - ----------------------------- Jewel Standing By Rhino's Domain http://fly.to/jewel.jk http://www.infomagic.com/~doskocil/rhino/rhino.html ICQ# : 19501801 AOL Instant Messenger: RhinoDosky - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ - ------------------------------ ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #548 ***************************
