Fellow EDAs, I think Larry Greenfield said it best when he quoted jewel saying "In the end only kindness matters." Although I have always been a fan of the first amendment I've found the past 24 hours of posts rather disheartening. I've always found this list to be a sort of home, a comfort zone. After the my parents got a divorce a couple of years ago I was the biggest cynic in the world. By some miracle I also found the Jewel list that same year. Through this list I have been the beneficiary of countless of kind EDAs who have supplied me with angelfood and kindness (thank you Jen for being my EDA parent), and even a place to sleep on one occasion(Thank you Mandy in SD). I've tried to return such generosity by dubbing hundreds of tapes for my fellow EDAs and on one occasion I even let someone stayed with me for a couple of days when they couldn't find a hotel. This list had restored my faith that there are kind people out there. I've brought this new found faith with me to my new law school this year. Some people on this campus called me too naive at first because I would always preach about being kind and being each others every day angels. Within the last 2 months I've proven my fellow students wrong by heading up various fundraising activities for the homeless and those who cannot afford legal representation. What I am trying to say is that if all of these law students (who are at times very cynical) can see the good in people then I think everybody can. I don't know Jewel and I never will so I cannot say that I "love" her but I do thank her for what she has done for me and countless of other people. I would like to thank Jen for incorporating me into the EDA family. I would like to thank Tal for being there when I needed someone to talk to. But most of all I thank YOU guys for your kindness. Take care my angels- Mary wannabe angel :) "In the end only kindness matters" ~Jewel Kilcher "Innocent can't be lost, it just needs to be maintained" ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. I'm just about to follow you out the door. I have been on this list since December 1996. This place used to be like the family I never had. Everyone was so wise and warm and caring and witty. Then all of the sudden more and more people began pouring in. Younger people who didn't even have Jewel's album. Immature teenagers who would do stupid things. Even an immature adult or two or would make idiotic comments just to make people angry, as well as stalking many EDAs. When the list had to be moderated, I knew that the close-knit family was now a mainstream, talked-about-mailing list which everyone joined after hearing about Jewel's connection with it. Nonetheless, Jewel helped me through a very bad depression two years ago and as a tribute to her, I spent thousands of dollars buying all of her CDs, promos, and imports. I even bought Phyllis Barnabee for $120! And then one day I realized "Why? Why am I spending so much time devoting my life to this person? I need to live for myself and not for anyone else." Still the pattern that I had once been involved in, with the entire "Oh I love Jewel and Jewel this and Jewel that and Jewel's so perfect" continued on until almost every EDA seemed to be worshipping her. The list was turning into a bunch of unhealthy obsessors. How can one have a decent conversation with someone who constantly praises Jewel and yells at someone for even uttering the slighest negative opinion about her? Basically the list got immature. And now I realized that people can't even handle freedom without behaving like immature teenagers. Try to tell a bunch of high school students that they have an entire hour to do whatever they want and I doubt any of them will act dignified. That is what the list has become. I no longer have passion for anybody specifically on the list. I used to admire so many people here -- Katie McCurry for her talents and kindness, Eric Montas for his hard work on many things, and of course Alan and Mike for their well-done jobs of helping us be a strong mailing list. Today I found a post that focused on me, from someone who didn't know me, and told everyone I was a homosexual. Although I am not a homosexual, the thing is...after the depression I became sociophobic and hated all human beings. And then I met a young man who changed my entire perspective on humanity and he became a big brother to me and cared about me and inspired me and I fell in love with him. It wasn't a sexual attraction but an emotional one. And I always said "You know if I want to be in a relationship with him, a nonsexual one but a relationship nonetheless, it's nobody's business and nobody really should hate me for who I date." And today I get told that I am a fag and stereotyped as feminine and it showed me how close-minded the world really is. I know she meant it as an insult, but why is being gay an insult? Obviously I was very hurt by the comments and decided I'd pick apart the poster the way she did me. Even though we sort of resolved the problem, she really doesn't feel bad for what she did. She is allegedly an EDA and this disgusts me. This isn't a list of angels who preach sensitivity and kindness and open- mindedness and creative passion. It's a list of normal people who are just as cruel as anybody who just happens to like the same singer. Why am I still part of this group? It's not special anymore. I keep waiting for something exciting to happen. Maybe the second EDA Cover Tape will be completed. Maybe I'll attend a gathering and meet some people I happen to admire. But none of this is happening. Right now I am getting sick of the Everyday Angels because they took their name in vain. There are a lot of nice and smart people here, but this is definitely not the EDAs I used to know and love. I am still deciding whether to unsubscribe or not. I don't think I'd be losing anything if I did. - -- Mark ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Oct 1998 13:46:12 -0500 From: Steve Hodgson Subject: Re: NJC: Current State of Affairs Speaking of worthless posts, how many people are going to have to write to the list and say, "See what Mike was trying to prove?" You bitch to Mike about the list being moderated and how everything you send doesn't go through, so what does he do? Give you the chance to have what you want. And what do you prove? The exact reason why the list is moderated in the first place, because a lot of people can not handle that freedom. If you really wanted to make a point here, you would not have taken this as a chance to post about anything and everything, instead you would of proven to Mike that you could handle the list not being moderated by posting on the reason we all (hopefully) joined this list in the first place JEWEL. I really don't care when your homework is due or what you did last night or what everyone's sexual preference is. Yet given the chance to have an unmoderated list and that's what you come up with?? Please. Frankly I'm very thankful to Mike for doing the job he does. The last thing I want is to check my email and find 100 emails, with maybe 3 actually mentioning Jewel. He keeps that from happening, and we should all be very thankful. Honestly, if this list ever went unmoderated, I know I would unsubcribe as quickly as my finger could hit the send button and I'm sure other people feel the same. Remember this is a JEWEL list and that's what all the posts should be about. Yet, there are NJC posts that do go through, when they don't have a right to since it's not Jewel related, but Mike lets those go through and instead of just a simple Thank you to Mike, what do people do?? Jumps down his throat because you want more stuff to get through. Talk about selfish! btw, I'm not trying to generalize how everyone is, because I know there's only a select few that this applies to. next topic. About the Steve Poltz thing. (Sorry I don't remember who it was now) but whoever said Steve's songs weren't very thought provoking and that they aren't the songs you would hear on the radio, I just have to say I totally agree, but that isn't a bad thing. If he did come out with songs that were all 'radio friendly'...I could just hear everyone now, saying how he sold out. Also on that note, about Jewel selling out.....if she was selling out, she would also come out with a cd focusing on songs that would be a good radio song (as lots of artists do). But she did not do that with Pieces of You and from what I see, she's not doing that with Spirit either. For instance, I can't imagine Fat Boy ever being a big radio hit, as in shooting up the chart, but it's still on the cd. Why? because she wants it there, not because it is a sure number one hit, but because it follows the theme she wants to get across in the cd. Selling out? I don't think so. That's all from this part of the world. Kinda long, but I get started typing and I just can't stop :) Heather ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Oct 1998 19:50:04 +0100 From: "Daniel Pugh" Subject: what is going on????
