I was listening to The River and they esplained that they were going to play Jewel's new song "Hands". I was lucky enough to have a blank tape in my tape recorder, so I was able to get the song on tape! :) Now I am so happy that I will be able to listen to it all the time. If you live in the Windsor/Detroit area, listen to 93.9fm The River if you want to hear the song! Katie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Oct 1998 14:22:31 -0300 (ADT) From: Jesse A McDonald Subject: apprehension Hey all... obviously, there's been a lot of talk about this new single, Hands. All of it, absolutely all of it, has been positive. That's good, of course... but... (oh yeah, it's Jesse the doomsayer again) I'm nervous about this upcoming record. I haven't heard Hands, so I don't know if I'll like it or not, but... okay, one of the main things about this album, that's been reported all over the place, is that it was produced (in part?) by someone-or-other, whose past production credits include Madonna. Errr... while the Ray Of Light album has some really nice music on it, this guy worked with Madonna in THE PAST... and I really don't want anyone like that setting foot NEAR Jewel's mixing boards, let alone controlling them. I'm afraid that this record is going to suffer. I'm not saying that this guy sucks or anything, I'm not that familiar with his work and who says that everything he does has to be similar anyway... but if I hear one reverb-laden drum machine snare, I'm gonna blow up. If the record has today's disgusting wall-of-sound feel to it, I'm gonna be upset. Remember the spacious, yet intimate feeling of POY? If that gets lost... I dunno. I'm nervous. Also, is it just me or is Jewel getting more and more uplifiting and spiritual with each passing moment? I must say that I'm not terribly into the lyrics I read for hands. Maybe the music will make me feel it, but as it is, it kinda sailed over me... I'd rather be made to cry. I just hope that something on Spirit will break my heart, and Jewel doesn't get TOO angelic. That being said, I don't want everyone to jump on me here and say "It is not your place to criticise the actions of our Holy Lady!" I'm not criticizing, per se, I'm just voicing my personal trepidations, and I'm wondering if anyone else has similar feelings? I am really desparate to receive this one from a friend in the Jewel world :-) i am very curious to watch her new Video of Hands, i guess it will be something special, something unexplainable, something really cool! Like we never seen of Jewel before ? So we can imagine and fantasy about this new video? Who wants to mail me about this new video, and who is willing to make a tape of upcoming Jewelperformances in the states ????? if somebody will mail me , no persons who wants to cash on this, but just as a way of being a friend of a Jewelfan in holland. I want to pay for a videotape (let's say 4 dollars, and to mail it back to holland, let's say 6 dollars, i know this prices are accurate, as i have been mailing and trading tapes till now)...only KINDNESS matters in the end!! greetings, michiel proud owner of : a dutch tribute to jewel - a beautiful angel from alaska http://members.xoom.com/Jewelimpala/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Oct 1998 15:31:11 EDT From: GeminyaD@aol.com Subject: Just wanted to give my input on "Hands" WOW! Is all I have to say. When I first heard the song I only heard part of it and as sappy as this may sound, I cried a bit. I think it is a GREAT song and I can't wait until the single/record comes out. I'm so EXCITED!!! The lyrics are so strong and moving, that I couldn't help but cry. I feel great now that there is finally a new song that I can memorize all the lyrics to and belt it out in my car and room. I couldn't believe it, because I have been requesting that song since Thursday, over and over, and finally it was playing. I was so excited, and it kept me happy for the rest of the school day. I dont think 96.3, 95.5 and 100.3 have it yet, because I requested it today, to see, and they havent played it yet. I was getting ready for school this morning , and we were just about to leave and Kristy(My sister) says "Hey did you know Jewel has a new CD coming out?" I said Duh Nov17 called "Spirit" she said yeah I think they just played her new song or something. My heart slid down too my feet. Then she said "I don't really know if they have played it yet they just mentioned it." So I begged and begged and she turned the radio station on in the car and the the school was in sight and It came on. She even stayed out in the car and let me listen to it which is like the only nice thing she has ever done for me. It is the best song I have ever heard and I am not just saying that cause I am biased I mean it. I just heard Hands too... so AM I THE FIRST ONE WHO LIVES IN EUROPE TO HEAR IT... of course I haven't heard it on an european station... but on 104.5 Chum FM Toronto Canda which is absolutely the best radio station I had the pleasure of listening too... so my opinon on the song: It is GREAT! It is certainly not the best I've heard from her, but it's different... it's definitely improved sound, music... lyrics aren't the sharpest... at some points it also sounds a bit like something Tori Amos type'o'music... really sounds beautiful!!! So overall... it's definitely something that's gonna end up (or start) at the TOP of my chart!!! WHEEEEEEEEE!!! I love it! And why is November 17th so faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar away! :( Take care and skin care Dr. RomeAntic, an angel with the worst stroke of luck "You don't have to stray The oceans away Waves roll in my thoughts Hold tight the ring... For those interested in purchasing the pre-release cassette of her new album (to be released early next year & as yet still untitled), drop me an email & I'll forward you details. Joy has a limited supply of these limited edition tapes left over from the LRT & you can mail order directly from her while they last. The tapes are $12 including shipping & handling. For those unfamiliar with all the hoo-hah surrounding this album, its a major leap forward from her critically acclaimed first album "Angel Town" while staying true to her jazz roots. The songs are more engaging than that first album, in my opinion, & the musicians on it all put on great performances. Cindy Lee Berryhill sat in the producers chair & arranged the incredible string parts played by Garage Orchestra cellist Rennatta Bratt & a small string section. I highly recommend this album to all who have enjoyed Joy's music in the past & I think many more will become enamored with her soon. Drop me a line if interested & I'll send you the direct ordering info. All the best, Alan ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #520 ***************************
