It was thick as hell and I thought...I bet Jewel is in here somewhere, and my suspicions were confirmed by the table of contents. She's on page 162-163, and one page is her interview, the opposite page is a pic of her. It looks like a photo shoot very like the one on the cover of ANWA. I wonder if they are one and the same. Anyways, I thought it was pretty groovy. Ask not for whom the bell tolls, It tolls for Thee. -Donne P.S. if you missed my last post, I'm open to trading the CBS morning interview/bio of Jewel for other angelfood. I was at the bookstore yesterday, Waldenbooks I think it was.... Yes, that's it. And I happened to see a calendar of Kevyn Aucoin's book Making Faces... So of course I immediately seized a copy of it and looked on the back. I had to look long and hard, but there she was, Jewel. She looked quite unlike herself, I must say. Heavily made up, but still not yet tacky. A nice picture. The calendar was selling for about twelve dollars, I think... I don't know, just thought I'd inform you. I think the most beautiful of Jewel's songs are Quiet Warrior and Flower. Quiet Warrior because the wording is just so beautiful, it flowers and flows and it's tangible and beautiful, like it's just pouring forth from a sunset or something. And Flower, again, because it's beautifully written, it flows, it's so smooth. (If anyone has sound clips for these and other unreleased, by the way, let me know....) Just my opinion.... Sam the ? angel >I hope every EDA out there is feeling well tonight ... I have a question >and I'd like to hear everyones opinion on it ... here goes ... of all the >songs Jewel has written, which one do you think has the most/best poetic >devices (such as metaphors, similies, etc.) To rephrase that, which song >(or poem for all you ANWA junkies) stands out as technically (pardon my >limited vocabulary) best? (Just saw the commercial for it, they mentioned Jewel a few times) Check your local listings for other time zones. Mike :-) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 07 Sep 1998 22:37:27 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: Text from Seventeen mag article on Jewel's movie Here's the text from an article in the September issue of Seventeen mag (found on the AOL site for the magazine....AOL keyword = "seventeen", then click on the magazine cover) Mike :-) By Eliza Bergman Krause "I fall in love with Skeet Ulrich's character, and we do the nasty," says Jewel, describing her role as Sue Lee Evans, a Civil War widow in the drama Ride With the Devil. Before you think romance, listen to what happens next. "Then there are gunshots, my in-laws get killed, and he [Ulrich] gets shot in the arm." With the exception of Ulrich's seven minutes in heaven with Jewel, the rest of the film, slated for an early 1999 release, depicts horrible acts of war. The movie, directed by Ang Lee (Sense and Sensibility) and filming in Kansas City, Missouri, follows the trials and mostly tribulations of boyhood friends Jake Roedel (Tobey Maguire) and Jack Bull Chiles (Ulrich), members of a gang of Confederate renegades called bushwhackers. Jewel's character is a teenager when she gets up close and personal, so to speak, with Jack. In a telephone interview from Kansas City, the 24-year-old singer sounds surprisingly calm, even though she's not only making her acting debut but is playing a character light-years away from her own persona. "It was a big bite," she admits. "I almost choked on it." So what was it like getting romantic with the ultracute Ulrich? "I haven't done the big love scene yet -- just the kissing with Skeet," explains Jewel, sounding a bit under-whelmed. "It was very professional. I thought I'd be really weirded out, but it was actually kind of like, Whatever." Then she adds, laughing, "He ate onions before we did it, just to mess with me." (For the record, Oscar-winner Matt Damon was originally slated to do the kissing, but he dropped out of the project.) Despite her utter lack of experience, Jewel had the right stuff to win the film's female lead. "The first time I heard her, I was in a car [listening to] 'Who Will Save Your Soul,'" recalls Ride producer Ted Hope. "I pulled over because I wanted to hear who was singing it -- I heard her soul, her feeling in it, and I think that, Jewel takes a Ride With the Devil along with what felt kind of innocent and fresh in her videos, felt like a true person." Innocent or not, Jewel was no shrinking violet when she met the production team. "She was really willing to be in the thick of it -- to sit around a table of guys and be able to blab and tell tales with the rest of us," says Hope. "It was just like, 'Wow, she really is this character.'" While researching her role, Jewel consulted many source materials, including Mary Chesnut's Civil War, a landmark diary; and Daniel Woodrell's Woe to Live On, the novel on which the film is based. She also worked with a dialect coach, as did the rest of the cast. When it came to acting like a Civil War teen, Jewel relied on Lee, who has directed the likes of Kate Winslet, Christina Ricci and Katie Holmes. "Ang helps train me," she says. "He's been very generous and incredibly attentive. You couldn't be in better hands." Lee put his stars through what Jewel calls boot camp, where they worked out ("He wanted the guys lean and scrappy"); he even taught his female star how to walk. "I walk like a modern woman, swaying, and you can't do that when you're in character. So Ang had to spend a lot of time saying, 'Don't walk like that!'" Making the movie has hardly been a glam experience. Jewel endures a corset ("It hurt at first -- you're almost in tears") and "boring" hair: "The [feminine] ideal was to look as round as possible, so they parted [their] hair in the middle; it was always up and back. And the makeup is none, [just] foundation." It's not as if she goes from the set and changes into a Dolce & Gabbana miniskirt and platforms -- in fact, she's been spending Sundays on horseback, learning how to rope cattle. "One of the movie's wranglers, Rusty, teaches me," she says. "It's really fun." When filming wraps on Ride With the Devil, Jewel hopes to continue her newfound career. "I like it; I like changes, you know?" she says. "I get really bored just doing one thing." No kidding -- she also has a book of poetry, A Night Without Armor, on the best-seller lists, which leads to the obvious question: Is scriptwriting in the cards? "When I get a little more focused -- as I grow a bit older," she says. "I'm a little scattered, that's why poetry works so well for me right now, 'cause each poem is short and complete. I'd like to get into music and scripts for Broadway musicals, but I don't see that happening for at least a couple of years."
