Conan made fun of Jewel tonite during one of his before and after plastic surgery segments...I don't know what he said word for word but this is BASICALLY it... "You all know folk singer Jewel, she looks natural, right? I didn't know she'd had any work done. (Then they show this nice picture of Jewel smiling. And the before picture she has this HUGE MOUTH and they kinda giggled, I forgot what they said and THEN they're like "Her real name is actually Edna Mumps,ha ha ha." Then Andy says "What'd they do just take the tire out of her mouth?" Or something to that effect...just thought you'd like to know. I LOVE Conan...but this is my least favorite skit they do...all of the plastic surgery ones aren't ever really funny....in my opinion! Bye guys! According to McGills Bookstore in Melbourne, Jewel's poetry book 'A Night Without Armor' will be available in September. I say this with some doubt however, because other bookstores I've been to have said as late as Christmas and others haven't even heard of it or don't have it on record. You can get bookstores to order it in from the US if you really want it. Also, I finally found the double Lilith CD titled: "Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Rock" with a Jewel track (with Indigo Girls & Sarah McLachlan) after weeks of looking (and asking). If you like the female rock scene then this is a pretty good buy (even though I haven't listened to it, I've read pretty good reviews). It costs about $AUD40 (quite expensive!) if you can find it! (I found it in JB-HI, Melbourne) Steve Poltz's album 'One Left Shoe' is also now available in Australia (saw it in most shops) as well as the single 'Silver Lining' (which was in the 'Hit Bound' section of one store!). It features four songs, three of which were co-written by Jewel. Also, Jewel sings backup (quite nicely I might add!) on 'Silver Lining'(not sure?) and 'I Thought I Saw You Last Night'. The track listing of the 'Silver Lining' CD single is : 1. Silver Lining (4:14) 2. Intro (0:17) 3.You Were Meant For Me (4:26) 4. Intro (1:00) 5. I Thought I Saw You Last Night (4:23) 6. Satan's Choir (3:33) It features a picture of Steve Poltz and a dog on the CD Cover and a closeup of Steve (on a crowded street) on the inside. The CD itself is blue newsprint style with a closeup of Steve. I mention this information merely for the Non-Aussie EDA's because sometimes there are different versions of the same single or CD in different countries (imports, etc) and so other people may be interested. Since this single was made and marketed in Australia (and Australasia) it may be different to the one released in the US (dunno though). If none of this interests you then don't worry!! On a similar note(sorry about the pun!), there are two versions of POY in Australia. If you bought your POY early on (as I did) there are only 14 tracks compared to the 15 tracks on the newer version of POY. The extra track is a 'bonus' track of 'Foolish Games' which I believe is the radio edit. Also, on the newer POY, it states that 'You Were Meant For Me' goes for 4:13 but on the old POY goes for 3:39. Actually, there is no difference as I put them both in the CD player and they both went for *exactly* the same duration. Ah well.... Have good one, Dave - the Aussie Angel. (sorry about the long post-just trying to keep people informed) One Last Thing (OLT): If you are European EDA's and are going to the Edinburgh Festival, be sure to check out 'Leonardo's Bride' (folky/pop) and 'Bluehouse' (accoustic/folk/harmony), both are superb acts from Australia led by female singers. Final Thing: If you are a US EDA (most of you!) try and check out 'The Superjesus' (rock/pop) at some stage. They absolutley go off! They are also from downunder. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Aug 1998 09:25:49 EDT From: FatKat4444@aol.com Subject: Re: Kev's insightful moment Cheers EDAs, responding to Kev's mail in the last digest, I'd have to say that Jewel's lyrics are pretty much the first one I have really taken to heart. Usually I'll just listen to a song and appreciate the music, but I don't really bother to follow the lyrics. But Jewel really writes great stuff and often I feel - and I'm sure you feel the same way - that she is not only speaking from her own heart but that she touches mine (ours). One of my favorite lines is "But maybe if we are surrounded in beauty/Someday we will become what we see" from "I'm Sensitive." Doesn't that tell you everything? I guess I could go on talking about this for a very long time, but I'll spare you. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Aug 1998 08:38:50 -0500 From: Karyn Cruz Subject: Angelfood from Japan? Mayhaps they were implying that she has a big mouth..er... Can sing a note for a long time (remembers seeing the WWSYS video for the first time) But... speaking of comedians, I can't believe none of you have posted about HBO stand up comedians.. Last night (repeat) was Kathi Griffin (or Griffith) from Suddenly Susan. She said she was supposed to do something for the president - be one of the performers at like a fund raiser or something (I don't remember - it was late last night). blah blah blah then she said a week before she said they canceled her - they felt that a standup comedian wasn't a good idea with the present scandal, and they'd rather have a musician so they hired jewel. then she said something how Jewel had real boobs, but the pres prolly couldn't handle it...and a little something bout her living in a van. I just think it goes to show she's becoming more popular now. If she wasn't popular, then she wouldn't be talked about. And some of the time, it's funny... A few weeks ago, someone else (dont' remember her name) talked about how she went to lilith fair and Sarah Mc...you know the founder. her. She hugged her for two hours, then Jewel came up and grabbed her from behind. I don't know..I usually don't mind it all that much. Sometimes it's actually funny. I guess I'm just not going to be the type to be protective of her.. I dunno. anyway...er..there. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Aug 1998 12:02:30 EDT From: Ruppus@aol.com Subject: Re: Jewel Reference on Conan In a message dated 8/20/98 11:57:57 AM Eastern Daylight Time, vansciver@vabch.com writes: << I just think it goes to show she's becoming more popular now. Here it is: Signature Style-Jewel Pieces of Jewel: "She's like a modern flower child to me," says stylist L'Wren Scott, who has worked with Jewel since 1997. "I dress her mostly in vintage or no-name designers." Pale blue, red and earth tones make Jewel sparkle; in a sleek tank top, A-line skirt and vintage leather jacket, she's radiant. "She's really into a seventies style," says Scott. The essential Jewel has a retro, hippieish sensibility with a nineties feminine side. No Foolish Fashion: For major events Jewel will nonetheless go for glamour. At the Grammys in 1997, this curvy blonde startled viewers with a diaphanous Gianfranco Ferre gown. She has worn Alberta Ferretti's fluid styles, sleek Prada and vintage outfits. On her they look uncomplicated and relaxed. "She likes clothes that are more about shape and fabric than over-the-top design," says Scott. Earthy Angel: Despite pressure from industry types who would believe that megastars should be larger than life and dress accordingly, Jewel is comfortable in her own skin. Okay, so it's mostly about fashion, but that's okay. On Conan O Brien last night they had a skit called "Before plastic surgery". It was hilarious! The put up a picture of Jewel and said that this was her after plastic surgery. Then they showed a picture of her before plastic surger - her face was blown out of perportion and her teeth were really mangled up bad. Then Conan said "{blah blah blah} ...the hardest part was pulling the spare tire out of her mouth." Yeah, I know that was mean, but in the name of HUMOR, it was funny. So before you flame or start an thread of how mean that was, just remember, we have a sense of humor here on earth. If anyone taped that on video, please get in touch with me. I want a dubbing and can offer you a lot of Jewel on video in return. Also the Jewel Compilatin Video #4 is finally done. Last year I did JCV#1, 2, & 3.
