It is for travel and other times when you don't want a big, bulky guitar. It probably wouldn't be good on stage because it wouldn't have the volume of bigger guitars. Hello, I disagree very strongly about saying "Who cares?" I think that if Jewel does use illeagal drugs we should definitley care. I look up to Jewel, and many other people do. If she choices the drink alcohol that is up to her, she is over 21 and is perfectly fine doing so. If she does drink and says she doesn't or uses drugs and says she doesn't I think that she is not anyone to look up too. If it is true that she does use drugs now I will lose a great deal of respect towards her. I do not ever plan to meet her or anything like that all I like is her inspiration and the hope she brings to this world, and the drug-free person she protrays. If she is not drug free she should stop saying she is, and stop trying to live her life just to be a role model for teenagers. Whatever. I have been surprised in the past by the animosity displayed for other members in the group, and today I read yet another example of that. This situation with people liking other musicians because they're associated with Jewel... Well, of course! When I was living in Albany, NY, I became a fan of the local music scene. When I would go to a show and see a musician I liked - moe. for example - they would mention other bands or play with other bands, and the other people there would have T-shirts of or talk about musicians they were into. So I'd check some of them out. Because if a group I appreciated respected another musician, I figured chances were I would, too. This thing about it being a way to meet Jewel - (I think it's being implied that this person is a younger member of this group) - is silly, but that's not everyone. I don't know what the age statistics are here, but this list is for EVERYONE who appreciates Jewel's music. And if it IS an age thing, they'll GROW UP soon enough. To make a blanket statement like that about "most" of the group insults the people making intelligent choices about what they choose to listen to and where their influences originate. I, for one, after reading about it on this list, noticed that Steve Poltz' new album was on the listening wall at Borders recently, so I decided to check it out. Sure, I learned about it because of Jewel, but I can make my own decision about whether I want to buy it or not. And I know I'm not alone in that. Maybe other people who feel that way just aren't posting as much as the people you're referring to. Maybe they need something a little more stimutating to respond to. Am I right? I'd have to say there may be some truth to this with some people, but certainly not most of the listmembers I know personally & it definately doesn't apply to AmyJo & I at all. Personally, I got into Cindy Lee Berryhill back in 1988 when she was nowhere near San Diego. She was living on the lower east side of Manhattan & didn't have an album out (of her own) yet. My first exposure to her was actually in the very early days of MTV, when she was featured as a guest on a long gone show called "The Cutting Edge". She did a very memorable version of "Damn I Wish I Was A Man" with her bass player Waygone Rex & percussionist Fluffy Spinelli. I was immediately taken with her wacky ways & been into it ever since. This was LONG before anyone on these lists or anyone in San Diego, ever heard of Jewel Kilcher, I'm sure. I also think many would be surprised to know that as much as AmyJo & I love Jewel's work, she is niether of our favorite artists & not even our favorite San Diego artist! Surprised? Its true! Personally, I find Cindy Lee Berryhill a more fascinating musician, arranger & composer & AmyJo absolutely loves Gregory Page's music & is completely enamored with his voice & lyrics. If I gave her the choice of listening to Gregory or Jewel, she'd pick Gregory every time. This takes nothing away from our love of Jewel's music, but I personally think Jewel is still evolving musically & that the best is yet to come. I think she's barely scratched the surface of what she's capable of. I'm looking forward to these next album sessions a lot, because I think these sessions will be the first real studio sessions where she has the confidence to enjoy it & control it the way she sees fit. I think the potential for a truly great 2nd album is enormous! I'd also like to point out that among all these San Diego artists, like Steve, Gregory, CLB, Joy, Andres Condon, Elizabeth, etc, that Jewel is the "baby" amongst them. Every one of them is at least a decade older than Jewel & has been composing original music much longer than Jewel. Jewel certainly has as much vocal experience as any of them, but her writing is still very much evolving & maturing. In Steve's case, he was/is a huge influence on Jewel, as well as being her #1 collaborator, so its only natural for J-fans to be interested in his work. To a smaller extent, that applies to a lot of the San Diego musicians. They're all part of a larger scene thats obviously had a profound impact on Jewel, supported her when she needed it & from what I see, still support each other every chance they get. Thats one of the facets that attracted me to many of these artists--their support & encouragement of each other. The EDAs are only perpetuating that & I'm all for it! Being from the other coast & very involved in the music scene here, I can tell you that San Diego is very special & very different. Out here, I don't see the support of each other amongst bands & songwriters. Its far more cut-throat, competitive & jealousy is rampant. That unending support of each other is not as prevelant as in San Diego & I sure wish it was! While some shallower people may be interested in these San Diego musicians because of thier friendship with Jewel, I think the vast majority of people who attend LRT gigs, see these other performers locally, enjoyed the Future Folklore tapes & rave about these other San Diego artists, do it because they love the music. Anyway, it doesn't really matter "how" you've come to enjoy these other San Diego artists. As long as you recognize them for their own individuality & talent now, thats all that matters. Have a great weekend! There is just a little bit...... This is what he wrote me: >Hey Mike. It looks like this is a new version of the same >concert. It's just been edited differently. Hope you can tune in. I'm not at all sure what it all means, and neither does MrBB (who I called), but I hope it's not just that all they "edited" was changing the incorrect song titles from the original/first "Jewel: Hard Rock Live" :-) Some speculation is that since the original show was an hour and three minutes, with maybe forty-two minutes of actual Jewel (the original had TONS of commercials) , they MAY have added a track/new song or two from the taping, as they taped a heck of a lot more than 1:03 back in February 1997 when it was done. (they taped for over two and a half hours) Again, this will be on at Midnight Eastern Time, tonight on VH1, check your local listings for your area :-) Mike :-) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Jul 1998 14:38:02 EDT From: VampSlayr6@aol.com Subject: Give the poor girl a break I know we have this image set before us of what Jewel should be. Earthy, spiritual,...etc etc. But remind yourselves that she is only 24 and despite what everyone says she's still trying to find herself and set her ways. But like with everyone else in showbiz she has to uphold an image that will attract a crowd hence the makeup and clothing. As for the drugs and drinking I've deleted most of the posts on the that but I don't think anyone listened very well to what Oprah said. She said "She doesn't drink or do drugs but what is her biggest vice it might surprise you." This was spoken of her writing. If you caught this well then good for you. So just remember we can't set what we want her to be she can only do it for us. Beth The Wondering Angel ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #407 ***************************
