MrBB ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Jul 1998 22:27:19 From: joe-schmo Subject: Changing Jewel I haven't posted a whole lot lately, I've just been kind of idle, and speak only when I'm spoken to, but for some reason, whenever there is turmoil on the list, I always open my fat mouth and get in trouble. Anyhow, i've just got one question regarding the whole Jewel Changing/Makeup/Oprah/Fame/etc./etc./etc./etc. bit. Isn't Jewel human just like the rest of us? We all do things that might not satisfy everybody around us, but we do them anyhow. Like MrBB said, Jewel is not always going to cater to us, although she does respect us and appreciate the EDAs. Does Jewel really wear makeup to conform to society, or does she do it for the same reason that I wear blue jeans? I don't do it because its 'cool', or the 'in' thing to do. I do it because I feel like it, and because I'm human, and thats my right! We parade around the list, and when things get a little hectic, we say "I'm sensitive..so be careful with me, cuz i'd like to stay that way". Sure, a great song, and I've said it too, but don't you think that maybe Jewel is sensitive, and she'd like to stay that way, even if she does change a little here and there? joe "the human angel" {\o/} /~\ Joe Field, 203 N. First of all, aren't we all on the list because we LIKE Jewel and we appreciate her music. I don't know about all of you, but I don't complain about my friends (aka people I like). Second, Jewel is only human. She doesn't want to be idealized, and frankly I don't think she should be. Before you hate me for saying that let me explain... I don't believe that one person is better than the next person. I believe we are all equal. We are all special in our own way, and those are the things that need to be cherished, not idealized. Lastly, Jewel, being a person like the rest of us, has every reason in the world to CHANGE if she feels the need. Who are we to judge if her changes are good or bad, or if she's a bitch now. Think about it.. are you exactly the same person today that you were, say 10 years ago... 5 years ago.. 2 years ago..... or even 2 months ago? I think not. Everyone needs room to grow as a person, don't they? So why don't we support her changes instead of condemming her for them. We should accept Jewel for who she is and not expect her to be something she is not. That's just my opinion, Teresa ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Jul 1998 23:17:41 -0500 From: Robyn Wellman Subject: NJC: Any EDA's live by me? Hello to all my fellow EDA'S!!!! I know this may be a stupid question, but I was wondering if anyone on the list was from the lower penninsula of Michigan, preferably from around the Jackson and Lenawee County areas. I live in Lenawee county. Also I have some Jewel Poetry that I got out of Teen People, and I will be glad to send copies to anyone who wants them. I am so sick and tired of all this Jewel complaining, Jewel does this, Jewel does that. This is the person I and most of us admire the most. We need to just shut up and sit back and supposrt everything she does ro else what else are we? This whole thing about her make up and her dress is none of our damn bussiness!! Jewel will wear what she wants to, put however much make up she wants to on herself, we support it. One must always fight and struggle for change and progress. To be happy is to be stagnant and content. > And, why should she be grateful for what she has? She earned it, it's her right, she worked damn hard to get where she is. Just some thoughts. Some of my thoughts- Yes, I agree that Jewel is exceptionally talented and has "talent, ability, uniqueness, originality, lyrical depth, etcetera." as you say. But she is not the only person in the world with a great talent in those areas. The edge that she has, for the time being, is Fame. Fame, be it a blessing or a curse, is something that cannot be given to everyone, so it really is a "lottery" of sorts. Be it right or wrong, it just is. I'd like to hope that the best person will always make it to the top, but that is just not always the case. In Jewel's case the best person did make it, but I know there are many well-deserving people out there who will just never be in the right place at the right time. Jewel herself admits that her fame is not of her own doing. That is why she should be grateful. For her to say that she earned it and deserves it would be slapping the face of the God who gave it to her. To me Luck is a gift from God (as is a beautiful voice, etc.) and not being appreciative is like being a spoiled four-year-old, who doesn't realize the lengths his parents are going to ensure his well-being. Second - what I meant by a happy person was not complacent. To me it is HOW a person struggles and strains and somehow grows from life's misery and constant flow of problems (Beleive me, Jewel is not an exception to life's problems). That person can be miserable and dwell on that, or look at those things as part of being alive and learn from them, not giving up on improving the future for themselves or others. When you can look at your own life and be proud of where you are and how you got there, that is where happiness lies. That's just how I've come to see things. Okay, end of sermon. If Jewel does use drugs. .currently. .forgetting the past. . . i > would not find her to be a good role model for the younger generations. . who > are a point in their life where they are extremely impressionable. What? I'm sorry, I think I may just be in a foul mood right now, but where did this come from? I am really confused about this whole drug thing. I'm pretty much a lurker on this list, but I'm really hot over the current drug discussion and I feel that my cue for entry has been given. Listen here, now, folks, this is the kind of thing that will make pewople like me leave this list. I think that we are all here with open minds, and if not, then maybe we are in the wrong place. Jesse made a good point about a person who dislikes Jewel being allowed on the list. I took his point to be that we have to be open to all things, and man, drugs are a part of life. Now, I know that this is a touchy subject, but I have been through enough drug use in my life, both my own and others around me, to earn the right to talk about this. Now, a lot of you guys are very young, and I am aware of that. I don't judge you on that or hold it against you in any way, but many of you have a narrow view regarding drugs because you haven't been there yet. It just hasn't come up for you as far as personal experience. Now that I have babbled, I will arrive at a point. Jewel, as I have gathered, grew up with a Mormon father. Now, one of the rules in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is that you must abstain from drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, caffeine, etc. This is, without a doubt, a good rule in many ways, especially when growing up. Now, Jewel has undoubtedly been exposed to drugs in her time: a)at an art school, b)living the life in San Diego as a struggling musician, c)as a successful musician; take your pick, it's been around. Whether or not she chose to indulge is HER OWN DAMN BUSINESS. This is just one of those things that is included in personal privilege. I think that we would be best to stay out of it. How one chooses to unwind, expand their mind, or whatever is really personal and not subject to the scrutiny of strangers (and who is stranger than us?). I really hope I didn't scare you guys away with the length here, but I mean what I said. I went to work today and came back after 9 hours and had 58 messages in my box, that's a lot for 1 day! The one thing Jewel wanted from her fans was to be looked upon as a human. She wants to be known for heart felt singing and beautiful Angel like sounds! And i think we need to be friends of her rather than criticize her for every move she makes and every breathe she takes! Because basically when it comes down to anythingand everything, we are just human. What she does, whether she drinks alcohol or does some pot, I mean it's her business. If she does, what are we going to do aboutit? You guys all sound like you are the 30 year old parent of some 5 year old child about to stick her hand in the cookie pot. I mean realistically, would you want people on some sort of list talking about whether you wore too much eye shadow or agreed to something out of sheer politeness or even god forbid nodded her head too much, and that we "sold out" and is diasppointed that she's not releasing her OLD album which she recorded over a year ago (I think). I mean I think we are being not only unrealistic and selfish when we complain about an artist's conceptions of how they want to be perceived, but downiright naive. And these digs on her being the next Mariah Carey, if anything, it's out of her control to do that. It's how the "fans" do that; and media and the reporters, I believe, are a reflection of society, although they "claim" to shape it, I mean we can't blame the media that brings us Jewel for destroying her. Oprah and whatnot, it's their jobs to bring their side of how they perceive her. And it sounds to me like you guys are all buying the fact she's from this Alaskan prairieland, where time doesn't exist, not to mention no drugs or alcohol. It's just silly to think these comments are coming from adults! This just my opinion as are yours but I mean when I read opinions that she is selling out because she has come to wearing a lot of makeup. I mean I view selling out when they don't stand up to their own beliefs, and with Jewel clearly stating that she;s bored, doing a movie, the book, I think if anything she's not selling out, she's broadening her horizons, and it's people like us who are categorizing her and trying to pigeon-hole her as some goody-two-shoes capable of not having one drink without being labeled a "drunk". Or some innocous statement such as "I don't really smoke pot" analyzed to the nano degree. ~may ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #403 ***************************
