I don't know if she has, I don't know if she hasn't. She could be different in interviews because of publicists or what people might have told to her to do and how to act. Another reason she could have changed was from age. Don't forget, she has gotten older and has added totally new experiences under her belt. She has grown. Can you say that in five years, you do not change? Think about it for a second, if you could meet yourself, from five years ago, would you not see a different person then you are today? Plus, does it really matter if she has changed? No matter how she has changed, it should effect any of us at all, she still is writing music and performing, she still is writing poetry, she still is doing everything that she used to do, and more. So as I look over this letter, and conclude, I say, let's not shun change, let's welcome it, with open arms, because change is good, and opens up new doors and new experiences for us all. //\//\att //\dler The "Thespian Angel" http://www.geocities.com/hollywood/1030 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Jul 1998 08:13:52 -0700 (PDT) From: Livia Giovetti Subject: NJC: Dharma and Greg Mailing List If anyone wants to join a Dharma and Greg mailing list, please E-mail Jenny at: bridgett19@hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Jul 1998 09:41:58 -0700 From: "Wizard" Subject: Jewel & Drugs >Also . .Oprah said >Jewel never has used drugs. .now there is some controversy about that. . with >the nickelodeon concert thing. . I’m really new ‘cause last time I was on the EDA list it was for about a year or something then I dunno somehow it screwed up! But anyways I’m back a little older and a lot more appreciative of Jewel! Ok lets see. . .I’m Cara from Nashville, TN (anyone else from TN email me!) and I’m 14. . .and I’ve loved Jewel ever since. . .(goodness 1994? I got her CD right when it came out here when ever that was!) I know what you’re thinking what does this psycho do in her free time (I’ll tell ya anyways) I write most of the time (if anyone wants to read/critic my poetry just email me or something!) when I’m not writing I’m acting or singing or listening to music (oh yeah I also love my friends!!) ok well I think I’ll be going. . . oh yeah my nickname was given to me before "baby angel" but I’ll take suggestions from anyone who has a better name! With all this criticism about the Oprah show and every other show she has been on, I have one question for you all. What is your favorite Jewel television interview? I don't mean specials like Hard Rock Live or any of that. I mean a show where she sits down and answers questions like in Fanatic, Oprah, or any other TELEVISION show. Let me know what you think. With all this talk about poor interviews, I was wondering if anybody liked ANY of them. :) Let me know! What resentment do you have against happy people? Jewel is a very lucky person. I'd give almost anything to be in her shoes right now. She is in a position where she can express herself in any direction she feels she needs to, and can finally help all those whom she's wanted to help but never could before - both through her inspiring words and her monetary donations. Giving to others with no strings attached is the most freeing thing I have ever been able to do for my own state of mind. She is the type of person who is not going to put on the "angry, embittered, selfish" act if its not what she feels in her heart. At one time, I'm sure she was the angry teenager, but now I see her as being very grateful for what she has. She has matured into happiness." Jewel is a lucky person? This implies that she is not much more talented then every other girl with a guitar who plays at a coffeeshop and that she just won some sorta fame lottery because of her looks(well, now thinking about it that may be partially true). But I don't believe that. I believe she is exceptionally talented and that her success stems less from luck and more from talent, ability, uniqueness, originality, lyrical depth, etcetera. As for what I have against happy people, it's just that I see very little in this world to be happy about. One must always fight and struggle for change and progress. To be happy is to be stagnant and content. I also think that Jewel is not in a position to "express herself in any direction she feels she needs to" because her freedom is constricted by her overpopularity. And, why should she be grateful for what she has? She earned it, it's her right, she worked damn hard to get where she is. Just some thoughts. No interruptions, no repetitious book plugs, just good, solid questions we all wanted to know. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ - ------------------------------------ For everyone - How many times did Oprah say the book title anyway? 10-15? At least. She ran that into the ground. I mean, say it once or twice, that's enough. Like Jay, or Dave, say it at the beginning of the segment, and at the end. We get the point. I now see why I've only seen like 2 episodes of Oprah. Including yesterday's show. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Jul 1998 12:03:24 -0500 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: Jumping on the bandwagon My take on the Oprah show....I'll give it a C+. Mostly due to Oprah's lack of knowledge on how to have an interview with a celebrity. How much does she get paid??? I think Jon Stewart did a better job when he interviewd Jewel than Oprah did. Oprah's way too business oriented, too stiff, and tries getting to the point, too fast. So much as to interrupt Jewel on more than one occasion...how rude. I wish Jewel had just kept talking to finish what she was saying. Like others have said....swapping off lines of poems, bad idea. Nedra's 1 minute talk...good addition. Wish she had been on stage though. Jewel was a little rusty on WWSYS, but I expected that being that she hasn't performed in awhile. Her voice just wasn't there, compared to other performances. The make-up issue, although nothing new, I tend to agree with Sean Hooks comments about that, and the other things he mentioned. Plain and simple, Jewel's not the earthy coffeehouse girl she used to be...selling 8 million CD's has a tendency to do that to someone ya know. But I think Oprah's people had something to do with the makeup, although, like Sean said, Jewel I'm sure could have intervened, and gotten them to tone it down some, if she wanted that. So, she'll do as she wishes. People change, they evolve, Jewel is no exception. For those (like me) who miss the ole' Jewel, the "natural" one, wait a few years or so, once the next CD comes out, maybe another book and/or movie, then things will settle down some. Sjhe'll be back to her ole' self eventually. That's when I'll look forward to seeing her perform again, in small clubs, etc. Not that I wouldn't want to see her now, but it's not the same when you're on row 59, seats ZZ, in the upper balcony section of the local arena with binoculars. Not that I've ever been, but I know some who have. She's alot closer to the likes of Janet and the Spice Girls, than to Joni, Tori, even Fiona now. That's fame though. But she's still a good person, loves helping people, and is doing what she wants to do, so you can't argue with that. Even if fame has corrupted her old ways some. That would happen to 99.9% of everyone on this earth...even if you wouldn't admit it. She may not even realize much of it...that's possible. So all in all, I think Jewel is happy with her life, her lifestyle, and what she stands for. So as long as she's happy, I'm happy. When she starts to seem like she's just going through the motions, looking bored, uninterested in performing, then I'll start to doubt her career path. Maybe that's when it's time for a change. But I don't think she'll get to that point. She'll just go back to playing in clubs, doing what she originally did in the beginning, before Mr. Atlantic rep happened to see her one evening. She didn't ask for this, as she said to Oprah, it just happened. And who would have turned an opportunity down to make millions?! I'm sure no one on this list would. Jewel's still Jewel, just a little more evolved than the Jewel of 1994 and earlier. But inside, she's still the same person, and always will be. She won't forget her roots, and once all this fame has run it's course, she'll continue doing what she loves...performing. Maybe even another Jewelstock...who knows? Things tend to go in circles...if you wait long enough...I tend to believe another Jewelstock will happen...eventually. Maybe a few years, but I think she'll do it. So let's all stop knocking Jewel for what fame has done to her...it would happen to anyone. Money talks...and has it's ways of changing a person. What matters though is that the person on the inside doesn't change. Their values, beliefs, etc. And I'm sure Jewel still believes in the same things she always has...even if her make-up has increased, and her persona on stage has changed, that still doesn't affect her soul.....just my opinion. It seems that all that was noticed about Jewel was her appearance. Why worry about how much make up and the clothes she is wearing. I am certain that Jewel herself would be dissappointed in those who are making comments about her "commercialized" appearance and not comments about what she had to say on Oprah. I thought she did a great job and was pleased to hear her talk about her spirituality with God (Even though Oprah lead her to the subject, yea right!)
