It doesn't take long to color or draw an angel!! I know I just sat down and drew one...it took about 15 minutes!! (And I'm not normally good w/ human-like drawings!) It won't take much time to make one pic of an angel and send it to sarah Elizabeth, the shy angel!! This will benefit those sick kids SO much, and if this isn't what the EDAs are about, then somebody tell me what ARE we about?!! I couldn't even tell you what Jewel was wearing... Anyway, I have the following, ill-informed comments... 1 - Jewel was talking in her little kid voice (good? bad? dunno?) 2 - Oprah reads poetry like it's a news article 3 - alternating lines in the readings wasn't a terribly good idea 4 - someone new is playing Oprah this season! ^_^ | Jesse Dangerously http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~ad309 | subterranean seraph 16 Trust Everyone | ad309@chebucto.ns.ca Ekam Sat, Viprah Bahudha Vadanti | ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Jul 1998 02:25:58 -0300 (ADT) From: Jesse A McDonald Subject: Re: Oprah, and Jewel(changing for the worse?) > And of course she's going to wear more makeup, first of all she has alot > more money and can affrord to look more beautiful, or it could have been .. ... ... now, I didn't see this makeup, but that doesn't even matter. That is one scary sentiment. If you'd said "Perhaps she didn't wear as much makeup as before because she couldn't afford to, and I think it looks great", then it wouldn't have taken me aback like this... but... (Who cares if Jesse's been taken aback? Maybe someone does...?) ...the notion that someone can purchase chemicals with economic vouchers that will MAKE THEM MORE BEAUTIFUL is pretty... well, sick! No, sorry, that's harsh. But it's just that... people REALLY ARE beautiful, all of them... Jewel and Rita MacNeil and Marylin Manson and Charles Manson and that big guy from Goonies are all beautiful NAKED, and makeup doesn't change that. Looks and fashion are personal and based on one's own opinions... but you can't get beauty in a stick, cream or powder form. I personally, can understand the makeup thing...I really enjoy putting makeup on, and I like how different makeup looks with different outfits, but I still think I'm pretty without it, I just enjoy enhancing myself...I don't consider it conforming, because it's how I express myself. >>The second thing that I miss about the Jewel whose music I fell in love with is the dark side. Jewel is now far too cheery and happy, it seems. Where is the angry, embittered, selfish(in a good way) Jewel>> Again, Jewel was 16 when she wrote most of the songs on PoY, and her life wasn't the most wonderful of lives!! Now she's living her dream!!! Wouldn't any of us be happy instead of "angry" and "embittered" if we were living our dreams??? And we haven't heard her new CD, so we have no clue if she's lost her edge!! :o) >>And it's not just that she sells a lot of records that they wouldn't have her, it's because her image is growing dangerously close to the likes of Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Paula Abdul<< I don't know how anyone can compare Jewel to those artists, or former artists, as I'd like to call them, no offence to the person who wrote that! :o) But Jewel still believes everything she always has, which is quite obvious to me from these recent interviews, and I don't think she'll change her music to some pop, or latina, or rap, or anything...Let's wait till her new CD comes out before we decide to judge her as a has-been, ok??? :o) As for Jewel expanding her horizons to acting...I am very happy for her! Acting can be a wonderful experience if you're given the right opportunity!! I think that sometimes we hold our idols up so high that we begin to expect too much of them. It's like we are so mesmerized by that first live show or that one super recording that we begin to expect the same thing plus more for every performance that follows. Most of the time the expected results are upheld, but then there will be that one time when something changes. Maybe it's not Jewel changing at all. It might just be that our expectations have hindered our view of reality: You know, that little place where things actually are in constant flux. In other words, we are so worried about seeing what we want to see that we aren't even looking at what is there. SO if you did like the Jewel interview (concert, anything)...great, and if you didn't...great. It's all about individual expectations and personal receptions of the event. Some people like to see Jewel mild, some like to see her energetic, etc...Jewel is Jewel no matter how she is made up and no matter how her "attitude" comes accross. SHe only changes in your own eyes when you see a side of her that you didn't expect to see. I hope I am not being in any way offensive to anyone with my long-winded speech here. Talk to ya guys lata! Hey everybody, I just want to say that we have all got to stop doing this. Every time Jewel does something different we all start complaining. I've done it before, yes, but what difference is it going to make? Us complaining won't change the way she looks or dressed or the way she puts on her make up. It won't change a thing. So I think that we should just sit back and enjoy what Jewel is doing, because she's not only doing this for herself but she's doing it for her fans as well. And also, Jewel is not snobby or whatever, she is a very sincerer person. I mean, would you guys really like to see Jewel jumping around yelling and stuff like some other people? (not mentioning any names) I don't think so. So lets just be happy with how Jewel is now. I couldn't have asked for a better Jewel and Her mom did a GREAT job raising her!!! Hello, Ok, since everyone is throwing in their valuable opinions, I might as well through in my 2 cents :) I'm sorry, but all this talk about "Jewel wearing too much make up" and "Jewel not thanking god at the awards" ---get over it already. I mean, just because Jewel wore make up...doesn't mean she CHANGED like some people have been saying. No offense to anyone, but I just don't agree with that at all. Show me a woman that doesn't wear makeup. And even if there is a "not famous..everyday woman" that doesn't wear makeup..but she decides she wants to....don't tell me that makes her a different person. I live in San Antonio, TX, where it seems like just about every girl in the city ( ok, mabye not that many, but close enough) puts on ten pounds of make-up and dress in a skin tight t-shirt with there breast hanging out so much that they might as well just not be wearing a shirt at all, and they dress like this just to go to the gas station. Jewel looked nowhere near that. What does it matter what she dresses like as long has she is true to herself. I didn't think that she was trying to impress anyone, but, i am not her, i don't know if she was or not. I know that there will be sombody that will she that she was trying to impress everybody, and that she shouldn't be doing that. When you say that, though, it seems as though you are saying that she should not try to impress anybody but "me", because apparently, she didn't impress you. As far as her just nodding to what Oprah said, this was a simple talk show, one person talks, then the other, although, i noticed a time or two when Jewel was about to say something, and Oprah just interupted her, but what can you expect, this wasn't Jerry Springer where she could have kicked Oprah's ass. That is my opinion. Not a fact, truth, or anything like that, just my own opinion and nothing more. §^v^v^v^v^v^v FlooD v^v^v^v^v^v^§ "I cry out to God seeking only his decision, Gabriel stands and confirms I've created My Own Prison" ------ Creed ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Jul 1998 00:58:46 PDT From: "David Trinh" Subject: Oprah on in Australia? I'm fairly new to the list and have never posted before, but I've been a fan of hers for a VERY long time, and I've been reading some disturbing things today. First of all, I saw Jewel on Oprah and Yes, she was beautiful inside and out, and her voice as always touched my soul. On the other hand, while watching, I did notice the things all you have been complaining about - makeup, nodding, living in van stories, etc. What I think, and what I feel that Jewel was also trying to get across to everyone watching the show, is that she is only human. Sorry to disappoint anyone, but she is not second only to Jesus. I think she would be upset to hear someone say that. If she wants to wear a lot of makeup one day, all the power to her! I for one rarely wear makeup, but for a special occasion I will. And if I was going to be on Oprah, You're darn right I'd be wearing makeup! About her nodding along with Oprah - If she agrees with what Oprah is saying, what do you really think she should do, shake her head? Lets be realistic here. Two people having a conversation can agree on a subject. After all it is Oprah's show and if she wants to talk about her and Jewel's mutual views on spirituality on national TV, she can. I think it's a positive thing. Not enough truly spiritual people get to express their views to the whole nation like that. Final thing - and then I'm done. What resentment do you have against happy people? Jewel is a very lucky person. I'd give almost anything to be in her shoes right now. She is in a position where she can express herself in any direction she feels she needs to, and can finally help all those whom she's wanted to help but never could before - both through her inspiring words and her monetary donations. Giving to others with no strings attached is the most freeing thing I have ever been able to do for my own state of mind. She is the type of person who is not going to put on the "angry, embittered, selfish" act if its not what she feels in her heart. At one time, I'm sure she was the angry teenager, but now I see her as being very grateful for what she has. She has matured into happiness. Thanks for letting me rant and rave, I feel better now! I hope I didn't offend anyone :) Bridget - the newly adopted "Horse Whispering Angel" ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #398 ***************************
