Hi folks, Well, they have the winners announced and up on the TVGen web site at http://www.tvgen.com/jewel/winner.htm and http://www.tvgen.com/jewel/runnersup1.htm and http://www.tvgen.com/jewel/runnersup2.htm For those of you that do not know, in celebration of the publication of Jewel's book, a night without armor, there was an online contest co-sponsored by HarperCollins and the TVGEN site, where folks submitted their own poetry and a panel would narrow down the entries to a batch that Jewel herself would then judge, and the winners were announced on the site today. There was one Grand Prize winner and ten runners' up. I checked the grand prize winner and runners' up against the roster of list subscriptions (email addies & some names supplied on the web site) and lo and behold there is a list member/EDA among the winners!!! :-) I didn't have to check her email addy, as I write this person quite often and obviously recognized her name right off the bat :-) Against the normal list policy of posting a poem, lyric or story not written by Jewel herself, I have decided to share this EDA's poem with you all, afterall it was judged by Jewel herself as one of the best submitted! :-) Congratulations to Rachel Katherine Musser, Age 12, MUSSERR@newton.hartwick.edu Of course, some of the other winners could be EDAs who just happen to be subscribed with another address. (some of the other names/addresses actually looked familiar to me, including the Grand Prize winner, Daniel Nester) Anyway, here's Rachel's winning poem: - - The Whispering Voice - Streams to the river river to the sea Lantern in her hand she follows after me In the chilling moonlight she looks at the stars that weave a web of colors so bright... Streams to the river river to the sea She follows the whispering voice that leads her towards me *********** Again, congratulations to Rachel (and all the winners!) Anyways, I found it interesting. This is what she had to say "The other day, I was in a gym in Kansas, and the worst songs were playing on the radio. And then my song came on, I was like 'I'm one of them, I'm a terrible love song.' It kind of scares me" Heather ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Jul 1998 07:12:33 -0400 (EDT) From: kartalst@HUGSE1.HARVARD.EDU Subject: Tales From the Living Room concert dates... Hello Everyone! I wanted to send this email out to you about my monthly concert series, "Tales From the Living Room" As most of you know, living room concerts are pretty damn special. Unlike your typical venue that just wants to book a singer that will fill up the room and help the venue have a successful business evening, playing in a person's living room is far more, well, how shall I say--humane. While playing in a living room, the siner has the opportunity to look around him or herself and really take notice of the connections being made with the audience--that person who's really listening, the person to whom the song hits home, the other one who can really understand what it's all about... To me, this is what it's all about--that connection. That *realization* of a natural talent and gift in action--in it's truest sense--shared between people and free to fly around. It seems like this is the singular most important thing, what makes it all "worth it." Many of you have been to living room concerts, either at my house or at other people's houses, whether it be at a Longfellow Street Concert with the Snyder family, at Alan's annual Cape Cod picnic with musical entertainment, at a Living RoomTour stop, or elsewhere. And many of you know how special it is--like that most beautiful gift being offered from Pandora's box, hope and faith, that makes all the other ills somehow bearable. The love I feel for hosting these concerts is enormous. To me, it's one of the *funnest* things I can do--sharing music I love with the people who really have become a part of me (by now a good deal of you have received, rather randomly, evidence of this...). I had a brainchild which I feel I must act upon: turning these occasional gigs into an organized, actual, monthly series. I have dubbed this effort "Tales From the Living ROom." How honoured I feel to be able to do this! The next few months have been "scheduled" starting with the official kick-off concert on AUGUST 15, featuring JOY ASKEW and JENNY BRUCE, both from New York City. The fun should begin around 7:30 or so in the evening, and, as usual, there is an admission donation of $10, all of which will be split equally between these two AMAzING women. Those of you who were at my first living room concert on May 2 know how incredible and how *touching* a singer Jenny is. The rest of you have heard about it. The beautiful thing is, it's all true! Jenny is the most soulful, most personal, and most earth-moving singer I have ever come across. Listening to her for even just five minutes always seems to make the worried sighs dissappear. Some of you may know Joy Askew. Last summer Joy toured with The Lillith Fair on the Village Acoustic stage and has had a 13 year long history with the New York (& national) music scene. Her talent is so beautiful and moving that she has toured with Joe Jackson, Laurie Anderson, and Peter Gabriel. Most recently Joy has completed the music for an independent movie called WHEN and has taken this music and made a sort of "soundtrack" of her songs called "When: The Bootleg" For those of you who have neverh eard Joy or who havenever heard *of* Joy, you will not regret letting her sing to you. "Amazing" does not even begin to describe how I feel towards her music. To wrap up/give ou the low-down... August 15 7:30 PM Tales From the Living Room Kick-Off Concert 76 Boston Ave, Medford, MA 02155 (email me for directions) $10 minimum donation Joy Askew & Jenny Bruce just remember one thing...this is an alcohol free & smoke-free event. I mentioed that the next few months have been scheduled. I've spent the last four days recovering from my taco, rollercoaster, french fry, no sleep, vampire, orange soda EDA overload. Also the urge to peeeeeeee!! Hehe, so any of you who didn't attend the EDA gathering in California, here's the details of all the fun you missed. Sowwy, I just love rubbing it in :) ******************************** GAG - Great America Gathering (so named for our dear friend Lora who spouts Monkey Cheese nonsense on occassion! Love ya long time :D ) Who went? ? ? Aurora Blackwell (Rory, Jiggler) Jim Yu (Jim-bo, Jimberly, Jimmy) Leif Yu (Leifers, AMY *please don't kill me*, Leifybabes) Lora Browne (Monkey Cheese) Jason Vierling (King Lez) Sonja (Our Own Private Jewel *You were meant for me...*) Dani(elle) (GEEK!!) Robbie (Jason's long-lost twin) Tom Yu (Can we be any more quiet?) Mike (Holic - would that be ALKAHolic?) and me, Nancy Nguyen (that bouncing chick who thinks she's a vampire) :) OH WAIT!!, my piggy Quinn too. :) ******************************** Friday, July 10 - Arrived at Jim and Leif's house. Well past midnite of course, and would have gone to Taco Hell, errr..Bell (VIVA GORDITAS!!!) had it not been closed :\ But no fear, we starved that night. So we vented wrath on the neighbors and almost got the cops called on us. Ahhhh, can't you smell that EDA spirit :) Got monster hugs from Jason and met Sonja, Dani, Robbie and Lora for the first time. I didn't spend the night that Friday (had to beg for cash from daddy dearest) but I hear it was spent talking and getting little sleep. ******************************** Saturday, July 11 - Whoohoo!!! Yee-haw pa, we'se goin' to a 'musement pahk! We head off to Denny's, minus Rory who couldn't hang with the early hours *snicker*, and spend the first ten minutes watching Lora throw away $6 to that little game thing in Denny's where you try to grab the little toys with the claw (Heck, I forgot what it's called) and I later point out to her that for $6 you can buy two stuffed dogs at Dennys. *shrug* So after waiting many moons for our bones to atrophy, we finally receive our food and shove off to GREAT AMERICA!!! Weeeeee!!!!!!! We meet up with Rory there and spend the rest of our day riding rollercoasters, flipping off cameras (lemme tell ya, we got a gooooood picture of that!), eating fries (yumm..), sitting on the carousel ("That's quite a piece of meat between your legs there Rory..."), eating flavored ice that costs buku bucks :P, being warned of Jesus' second coming, giving "attitude" to the GA employees, crossing our eyes, trying to win a purple fuzzy bear (and not succeeding either!), making monkey faces, and just enjoying one heck of a good day. Dammit, now that I think back...I forgot to get a funnel cake :\ Well at least I had my fries...anyway...Sonja impressed us with her singing skills and to make it an EDA day, she made a little tape at GA of her singing You Were Meant For Me. And doing one heck of a job too! Who's Jewel again? Hehe, ;) We buy glowing stars to wear on our heads (those of us who weren't screaming our lungs off on the Invertigo), and toddle our way back to our respective vehicles and head back to Jim and Leif's at the end of the day. We spend the night talking and convincing each other that we're not tired...yeah right. And listening to Tori Amos too, can't forget that..."Getting off, getting off..." ******************************** Sunday, July 12 - After getting very little sleep, we bounce back up and pave way for Chef Jason. Let me tell ya, he makes a mean taco!! THEY RICK ASS!! (I said rick Erica!!!) After stuffing ourselves we loaf around talking and listening to umm...what's her name? Sonja? Nah, that's not it...anyway, then comes evening time...when everyone goes home :( We say our goodbye's to Dani and Robbie and they leave for Sacramento, then it's finally time for Jason, Sonja and Lora to go back to San Diego. *sigh* Parting is such sweet, taco-less, sorrow. So this is the part where I get squeezed/hugged so hard that the urge to tinkle is instilled within me. Hehe, Jason makes mad good tacos, but he can outhug his cooking any day ;) Well...if that made any sense. *sniff* My story is nearing it's end. Actually, it is the end. *sob* ******************************** Until next time folks!! Which has got me thinking....can we have a TacoFest? Jason? I'm getting those strange urges and hungerings again... maybe I'll just bite Jim on the arm again...... *grin* No takey my piggy! ******************************** Here's a little bonus from our great weekend. Quotes from the esteemed GAG'erers: "Monkey, cheese, monkey cheese." - Lora "I'm goin' to kick yo @$$!" - Lora "." - Tom "Hisssss..." - Nancy "Gettin off, gettin off." - Leif "Your kitchen turns me on." - Jason "Jesus is coming! Y'all better be prepared!!" - Girl in line for Vortex who wondered what kind of weird cult EDA's are. "Blah, blah, blah, like, blah, like yeah and blah, like, like, blah blah, like, blah!" - Like yeah, Dani(elle) like said that "I got one big piece of meat between my legs!" - Rory "Ow." - Jim *snicker* ******************************** Ok, I'm done taking up your time. :) Take care yo! Go get yourselves some tacos!! The computer is bad! BAD, BAAAAAD...tsk, tsk, tsk...... Love, Nancy, the angel who breaks everything sometimes. (Almost broke Leif's door with a nice tumbling roll off her bed too and thought I broke my toe too, but it was just a false alarm...phew!) ******************************** ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #385 ***************************
