In theory, I don't like fan clubs. The only one I've ever tried to join was the Cypress Hill fan club way back in 1993 (and I couldn't because they couldn't accept Canadian cheques) but since then I've learned something about them - they're a scam. They're a mental tourist trap. I mean is this what we want... "For $29.95 US you recieve the following: * five Jewel stickers! * special EDA ID card with YOUR ANGEL NAME! * personalized PHOTO OF JEWEL! * four issues of our semi-annual EDA newsletter! ORDER TODAY!!" Yeah okay, so it doesn' sound that bad... but it is. Fan clubs are tacky and not cheap. I suppose, in a sense, that this EDA list IS a fan club, since we're supposedly fans of Jewel's and we belong to the list as members... in THAT sense, fan clubs aren't bad at all because the list was free and we're all learning and communicating and sharing and it's all good... and maybe a non-electronic Jewel newsletter is a great idea... but... "Official Fan Clubs" ain't cool. They're like designer clothes - what are you really paying for? Now I KNOW I didn't say that very well... but hey, if you take issue with the above, you know who to call... | Jesse Dangerously http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~ad309 | subterranean seraph 16 Trust Everyone | ad309@chebucto.ns.ca Ekam Sat, Viprah Bahudha Vadanti | ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Jul 1998 09:20:35 -0500 From: Jennie Anderson Subject: NJC: lilith fair hey all! i just wanted to say that i went to lilith fair here in indiana on the 4th of july and, even though jewel is not there this year, i highly recommend going! it was great! well, most of it was ok, but sarah mclachlan gave the best performance i've ever seen anyone give! so, go if you get the chance! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Jul 1998 16:08:05 +0200 From: Jesse Houwing Subject: Re: jewelfanclub based in world.... > hello EDA-s, > > i fully agree with jesse on of the fans of Jewel in holland :) to start > working here as a Jewelfan team.......i think it would be nice to make > regions roudn the world....like europe, > asia, america , and so on.....each of us are than making special reports > or interviewing fans why they like jewel so much and maybe when the > jewelfan club really lifts of we can go to the us for asking Jewel - the > beautiful angel from alaska - herself questions about her new album & > other career developments :) > > the main threat for this whole idea is just that in europe the info > about jewel is a litlle bit harder to get esp because you hardly see her > on tv.....:( we here in europe don't have vh1, muchmusic, the > broadcasters abc, cbs and nbc.....so we know a little about jewel new > actitvities....that's why i am so happy with this jeweldigest because it > keeps you up to date what jewel is planning and this is the way how to > get jewelrecordings from fans for fans! and that's unique!! i never seen > more willigness to make tapes for eachother than from all JEWELFANS > ....so thanks to you all again!! Maybe it would aso be possible to share information and tapes and stuff between the fanclubs, so the US and other fanclubs other then Europe would get the European info send to the (as copies or even originals if possible) and vace versa. I don't think that an "official fan >club" would give us many advantages over what this list is now-- besides >maybe bragging rights. > Seriously, what is to gain? Jon, I think the idea is, it would primarily be a fan club for people who for one reason or another can't be or aren't on this list. As Mike Connell mentioned, a mail-oriented fan club (i.e. newsletters, etc.) would be the most likely form of this fan club, which is a benefit for people without email because just about everybody (in the US, at least) gets regular mail. (Too much of it, in my case... stupid great American junk mail... :) A fan club would probably be able to do the same sorts of things, just via paper mail, rather than email. If you want to take the "what's in it for us?" stance, well... there isn't really any incentive, because those of us on this list would probably be getting the same information, just slower, through the paper mail fan club. However, there is a large number of people (I'm thinking here of the younger people, primarily) who either can't use email or don't have access to email... these people might enjoy & appreciate a fan club. I think it would make sense, seeing as this list is probably the most "in the know" aside from Jewel & her management, that the fan club at least started as an offshoot of this list. No, there's nothing to gain really for us, but it could be a way to introduce Jewel on a more personal level to a whole new group of potential fans... Logistically, it would probably be a nightmare to run a nationwide (or worldwide) fan club... But I do think it's a pretty good idea, and is at least worth looking into. But at the same time, we can provide some stuff for people with out computers, but if one of you EDAs do start one of these things, don't advertise her club everywhere, keep it low profile so that it won't be toooooo big of a thing, that is usually the kiss of death for some singers, when everybody knows them, and they market millions of products, so i am in favor of a low profile jewel club just my two or three cents George of the Jungle The pschedelic angel (or something) "I know that everything sux, yeah, and i know everything sux whooa, i know that everything sux, and this is gonna be the last time you hear me complain"-Reel Big Fish ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #365 ***************************
