He moved away when he was a toddler, but we'll stake any claims on public figures that we can, so he's OURS. ^_^ So anyway, this seems to be his big homecoming... he was doing a free instore promo @ HMV, just him and his guitar... I walked in a little late because I miscalculated how long it would take me to get there, but what I saw was NICE. He was really charismatic, interspersing stories with his songs much the way Jewel does... when he sang, his face was really expressive and he looked like he was having a lot of fun. He's an amazingly skilled guitarist... well, I thought so, although I'm no conoisseur. ^_^ He performed Silver Lining, Salvation Song, Waking Up With You, Impala (which was a sing-along!^_^), You Were Meant For Me ("from a dude's perspective") and ended with, of all things, a cover of TLC's Waterfalls. Now look, I can't stand commercial R'n'B like TLC. No offense to anyone who likes them, but they really turn me off. But somehow he made me like this song... I mean it's a nice chord progression to begin with, as I'm sure you've all noticed... and his performance rocked. He made me appreciate the lyrics.... I was really impressed when he did the rap section, because although I love hip hop lyricism, I HATE when pop R'n'B chicks rap. He made me like it. Basically what I'm saying is: MASSIVE POUNDS, PROPS AND 'SPECTS FOR STEVE!!! He was really enthusiastic while playing, and he sang all the horn parts as the Bosstones weren't in effect... ^_^ after the show, I approached him and told him I'd enjoyed it, and asked him to sign something for me... he said he'd love to (another reason he's a cool guy^_^) and I whipped out my medium - one old canvas left shoe, white! ^_^ He's playing the Economy Shoe Shop tonight (which is actually a club, not a shoe shop) with no cover, but the venue's licensed. I expressed chagrin at not being able to come see it, so he calls to his road manager "Hey, when this guy tries to get in tonight, tell them he's selling t-shirts for us!" ^_^ So yeah, he's really cool and you should go see him when he plays in your area... request Waterfalls. ^_^ | Jesse Dangerously http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~ad309 | subterranean seraph 16 Trust Everyone | ad309@chebucto.ns.ca Ekam Sat, Viprah Bahudha Vadanti | ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Jun 1998 16:27:40 -0300 (ADT) From: Jesse A McDonald Subject: SJC: whoops! D'oh! I forgot the Jewel content from my Steve Poltz post! The thing was, just before he did YWMFM, he told this story... seems they wrote it in Mexico, before either of them had deals (of coz), on a cocktail napkin... and on their way back to San Diego, they were (for some reason) singing all the songs they'd written to this prostitute chilling on a corner somewhere... and when they finished that one, the woman says to Jewel, "Honey, you better be the one singing that one because this white boy can't sing!" He went on to say two things about the "Guy" version of YWMFM: 1 - It can sound like it's being sung by a stalker who can't admit that it's over... "get over it and get a restraining order!" he says 2 - He would never have written the line "I break the yolks and make a smiley face" because a guy wouldn't say that. Since a guy wouldn't say that, he said he was going to mumble past that line... which he did. "break the yolks and make a smuh luhhhhh" ^_^ | Jesse Dangerously http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~ad309 | subterranean seraph 16 Trust Everyone | ad309@chebucto.ns.ca Ekam Sat, Viprah Bahudha Vadanti | ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Jun 1998 20:02:13 EDT From: MAXMOUZE@aol.com Subject: Re: Satellite In a message dated 98-06-10 19:12:02 EDT, ctb8g@hotmail.com writes: < i don't know about the white wall mabye she is just talking about a place were everything is pure (white) an because we can't see over it we cannot experience it. > It stands for people not knowing about the world. All they know is Southern California, and the big city, and how people think there (making glamor so important). But elsewhere, people like Jewel are struggling or learning how to live the world without running water, television, etc. In California, they can't even go camping because it's so out of the ordinary for them. The white wall could also be something blocking them from seeing themselves. They don't understand their soul, their heart, their mind because they don't know hwo to analyze themselves. They live in cities, they don't know what it's like to care more about health and fashion, etc. I have seen both world - -- I live in a little town in Calfiornia but an hour or two away is L.A. where everyone is completely different. My stepmom is one who is being talked about in Satellite. Yoga, wheat germ, all this Californianish stuff and she doesn't really know how to react to people's problems. As for me, my thoughts and my soul is more important than my body or my health or being glamorous. That's why California is such a weird place.
