Jewel: Hi! TVGEN: Let's get right to the questions! Pinky_72: What made you decide to write a book of poetry? Jewel: I've always written poetry before I wrote songs. So it just seemed natural. Also, in pop music I began to feel the media portrayed me to the public more than I had a chance to. And so the book allowed me to portray myself. Sillyk0ne: Can you explain the title of your book? Jewel: I think sometimes the strongest you can possibly be is the most open. And that if you protect yourself with armor in certain places emotionally it shows people where you are most vulnerable. So it's a play on words. And also in poetry I'm the most naked, or revealed, as I am in any art form. Giofreddo: Are you going to use your poetry as lyrics for your new songs ?? Jewel: I steal lines here and there. Katie_R98: Where do you usually get your inspiration from? Jewel: Umm, hmmm. I guess the more I live, the better I get at having my inspired moments last longer until they finally run into each other. And hopefully in time, I'll just live inspired. Many things inspire me. PoisonSkittles: Who do you admire? Have any of these people influenced you poetry? Jewel: I admire my mother as a mentor. And she doesn't inspire specific poems as much as she inspires where the poems come from. She invests in me as a human which makes my poetry richer. INSOMNIA0217: When do you write poems? Jewel: All the time. Cbaldrey: Do you have your own favorite poem, published or not? Jewel: I don't know how to pick one. 8itgreat: Which do you prefer as an art: music or poetry? Jewel: They are just different. Luckily I can do both. If I want to express my own private thoughts, poetry is the most immediate. Derrick70: Jewel, why did you decide not to include the last few verses of "As A Child I Walked" in your poetry book? I'm thinking of the version you recited at Jewelstock. Thanks, Derrick Jewel: Derrick, hi. I just felt it ran on too long. And I felt that it said the same thing in the first verse and then kind of ran on. And also so freaks like you would notice and write about it! Ha ha! Weiner42: When is your next album coming out? Jewel: Hopefully November. Ophelia_swims: How is there any one place where you write your poems, or does it not really matter? Jewel: It doesn't really matter. JennM_1234: Are you really judging that on-line poetry contest? Jewel: Yeah, I'll see the final entries. Sillyk0ne: Do you have any plans for releasing future books of poetry? Jewel: Yes, definitely. My next book will include more prose and short stories, I think. Katerina_17: Jewel, I want to become a singer and poet, how do I get started? Jewel: Just be one. I never meant to do what I do, I just did it. I think when you are something, you just are it. Like Bukowski said, "If you are a writer you write." Just get good at your craft. J_mciver: Is there a specific style or scheme that you use in all your poetry Jewel: No. I try to be varied. Tristan_123: Jewel, are you interested in acting?? In movies or anything like that? It would be great to see you in a movie. Jewel: I'm doing a movie called Ride With The Devil. The director is Ang Lee. And I've been shooting for three months. I guess I have the female lead. Starbrite_83: Are your poems written for yourself or are they dedicated to people? Jewel: Umm, I guess both. I use poetry to help me understand my life, my emotions, the world I live in. I understand things better when it's in ink. There are poems that are specifically about or for people. And others are just observations. Rebo87: Jewel, when did you start writing? Jewel: When I was six or so. I didn't really keep track of it until I was 15. Count_Von_Spielberg: Do you read much poetry; and if so, who are your favorite poets? Jewel: Neruda, Rilke, Bukowski, Shakespeare, to name a few. Ral_34: Jewel, you were excellent in "The Wizard of Oz!" Will you being doing any Broadway in the near future? Jewel: I've thought about it. It's very time-consuming. And I fear the repetitiveness of the long runs would find me thoroughly bored after a month. I have more interest in writing one. The_Rusch: Is there anyone you want to collaborate with? Jewel: I'd like to collaborate with other art forms, modern dance and visual arts. I haven't thought about exactly who yet. Mouse6_7: Is there any chance of you writing a poem/song about THIS experience? Jewel: I suppose. Milt0506: When do you write the best poetry? When you're happy or sad? Jewel: Oh, heck! Well, I used to write out of severe need when I was upset. And it's been a challenge to write when I'm happy. It's much more difficult to articulate beauty. And I'm realizing that it is a more deserving challenge, because pain writes itself. Saron11: I've noticed your poetry and music are incredibly personal--you seem to let us into some of your most private moments. Did you have any qualms about allowing that much of yourself to be released the public? Jewel: No. I've never thought that what I feel is that unique. We all feel lust or alone or proud...there's really no topics that are that original here. And I think that the more honest we are, the more we learn how to be human. And as I was putting this book together, I thought about the books that really affected my life and my growth, and they were always the most honest ones that didn't censor themselves, like Anais Nin or Bukowski. Barabbus: Do you like writing more about the present time or about your past? Jewel: Both. I like writing literally and fictionally. It's all good. Good fun. JakeTrout24: Have you ever gone back to complete and finished poem and added something else in? Jewel: Yeah. The poem called Compass was completely different. The opening line was towards the end originally I think. And I like it much better now. DevilishlyCute: What is your favorite hobby? Writing or singing? Jewel: All of these either-or's! I guess all of them. I like surfing and horse riding. I love silence. I like just sitting quietly. Omnicow: Do you ever write on your own to make yourself feel better? Jewel: That's all I do! It's always been very, very personal. I never thought that I was a writer or that people would actually see it. It just helped me through my day. And then people started calling me a writer! But it was an accident. Alleyed: Did any of your songs start out as poems? Jewel: "Foolish Games". Not many. Ace1st_98: Do you plan on doing any book tours for your book? Jewel: It's been hard between the movie and the time pressure that I'm under to get the album out so soon. I might do one or two dates. But it's hard to get the time unless I postpone my album a year. Nicotine_Patches: Do you carry a sketch book/writing book with you wherever you go and just jot down your thoughts as they come to you?! Do you also collect eclectic things as objects to help you remember the place that you visited and the people that you met?! Jewel: The first part, yes. I do carry a journal, or blank writing book with me wherever I go. My writing is my luggage, my photographs and my memorabilia. I can go to it and have a very specific description of what the weather was like and what its effect on me was. But other than that I tend not to pack much stuff around. I like to travel light. Tristan_123: Jewel, do you read a lot of books? Like novels and such?? Jewel: Yes. Avid reader. Sara18_: i have a 2 year old daughter that loves your music so much and won't go to bed without listening to you first. How does it make you feel that through your music and poetry you can have such an effect on people, even the really young ones? Jewel: I think it's the biggest compliment. I do this for people and myself. It's my goal. So to know that it works makes me suffer the record business easier. PeaceBabe98: Do you ever do any sketches or paintings to accompany your poems? Jewel: Yes. I used to study visual art in high school. I did marble carving and worked with pastels a lot. But my ability to do that on the road is very limited. So now I just do sketches in ink. Laprosa: Jewel, do your recent travels inspire your writing? Jewel: Yeah. Poems in the book like "Taipai", "1B", "Las Vegas", all those things are from touring. To be continued in part 2 of 2 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Jun 1998 18:54:14 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: Jewel chat transcript - full text - part 2 of 2 Here's part 2 of 2 of the Jewel chat transcript from Monday night - Mike :-) Sender: owner-jewel@smoe.org Precedence: bulk Jewel and Bob Holman, June 8, 1998 Favre_13: Is it hard to write the music (lyrics and all)? Jewel: No. I find poetry easier just because I've done it longer, and I still struggle with the guitar to get what I hear in my head out of my hands. My hands aren't very mature. Graham__: Can you suggest any books to us (not necessarily of poems)? Jewel: Let me think for a second. Nabokov's short stories. What else do I really love? A biography on the last Russian Czar, I can't remember the title. And Rilke's love poems to God. That's a good start. Deztiny_98: Are you writing something at the moment? Jewel: All the time. I write like five or ten poems a day usually. Boxergirl_5: For your book, did you ask any people to suggest what poems should be published? Jewel: Just my mom. My boyfriend, my best friend, but other than that, not really. Buffy_The_People_Slayer: Out of the, say, five or ten poems that you write a day, how many are you actually satisfied with? Jewel: It varies. I find that as I get better at writing, the number goes up. Chepechat: What Neruda poems do you like best and why? Jewel: That's an essay question! I like a lot of his political poems, no title specifically, his love poems, like "Your Breath Is Enough", is a very pretty poem. EricaLT: What do you do for fun? Jewel: LOL! My work is fun. It takes up all of my time. I horseride. But I think the best part is that I like my work. I'm not always looking to escape it. Sunkiss737: Who are your role models (alive or dead)? Jewel: My mom. Anybody that lives bravely. Whether it's everyday heroes - people that don't compromise what they know to be true. Twig800: Do you like Shakespeare's plays as well as poetry? Jewel: Oh, yeah. I love all writing. I LOVE Ibsen. I love his plays. Salinter: Will your new album differ from the first stylistically? Jewel: This record is going to be a theme record. I have six weeks to do it. So it's not going to be too complex. I'm putting it out for Christmas. It will be different. But I haven't done it yet. We'll see. Jungle_B0Y: What is an average work day like for you? Jewel: It varies. When I was touring, you get up at 6:00 a.m. Fly somewhere. Do four, five or six interviews, or in-stores. Then do a gig, drive five hours, get up, do it again. Now in a movie, it's much more stable. Snowgold: Is the audio book of A Night Without Armor available on CD? Jewel: Yes. It is. Should be available where the books are available, as well as in record stores, I hope. SKiDaMtS_EDA: What is your part in the movie? Jewel: The part of a 19-year-old Civil War widow. Laughing_in_yellow: Will your write any songs for the soundtrack to Ride With The Devil?? Jewel: Might do one. It's a period piece, so they won't use contemporary music. But I wrote a song for my character and they're thinking about using it. Angel2001_: How do you feel about being such a role model and inspiration? Jewel: I don't mind. I don't know. I don't think about it. I think we all inspire each other. My main concern is in living justly, because I have to face myself daily as well as at the end of my life. And I want it to have been spent bravely, and in service to others. I want to kind of be my own role model, too. Dgallant: Is it easier, harder or indifferent to write poetry or lyrics Jewel: About the same. Poetry has less limits, it doesn't have to rhyme, it doesn't have to be three minutes, so it's easier for me in a way. Cougar5014: What is it that you want to accomplish in the future? Jewel: Creatively, there are a lot of things I'd like to move into. I'd like to work more in classical music. I'd like to dance again. I'd like to be saucier, a cook. Personally, which is what really matters, I want to be able to help more people, to improve the quality of lives. The rest is sort of entertainment. I don't really get to enjoy my success if we're not all successful. I think everybody deserves to make a living, and to enjoy what they do. I'd like to facilitate that if I can. BluEydMermaid: Is it true you studied opera? Jewel: Somewhat informally, yes. I skipped all my voice lessons and showed up for recitals. EDA_rob_d: What is the topic of the Oprah show that is being taped tomorrow going to be? Jewel: Me! I don't know! It airs the June 22. LIST MODERATOR NOTE - this has since been corrected to July 22nd, with a possible change moving the date up. Sheldonclyde: Hi Jewel, Sheldon from Winnipeg. Do you plan on incorporating any of your poetry into your live performances? Jewel: I have occasionally. It depends on how attentive the crowd is. Maybe it'll be incentive! Lion_cobra: Do you think your kind of success can be achieved by anyone? Jewel: Yes. In different areas. You know I really consider my success to be not money or degrees of fame. I feel like I won because I do what I love. To me that's success. And I think that that can be accomplished by everyone. God grants dreams. Not record labels. Bloodcousins: Do you prefer to write political poems or love poems? Jewel: Both. Poetry represents life, and life is not one dimensional. Franckx2000: What singers influenced you? Your sound is unique. Jewel: My critics would probably disagree! Ella Fitzgerald to a large degree. Edith Piaf. Jennifer Warren, Kate Bush. Nancy Griffith. Bob Dylan. Ada3579: What kept you going when times were rough and you were trying to achieve success? Jewel: It was my fight. I had a lot to gain and very little to lose. And I believed that I deserved to at least make my living in the world. I didn't have big designs of being hugely famous. So I felt pretty good about every gig. The biggest rush was when people listened, and that was accomplished usually in clubs. Dreamt98: I write poetry, Jewel. You're an influence. I need to know how I can get my ideas on paper better. It seems I usually have a hard time with that. Any advice?? :) Jewel: Just keep doing it. I was the same way, it would come out awkward, clumsy or trite. Also read a lot, the more you're exposed to great writing, the more it effects you by osmosis. Also don't judge your writing. Just write. Sunny_D_siz69: Are there any singers you would like to work with? Jewel: Steve Earle. Bob Dylan. Nina Simone. Jimmy Scott. Elbryan42: How far back (chronologically) do the poems in A Night Without Armor go??? Jewel: Age 15. Not many years. IamJamie29: What is your favorite color pen to write in? or are you a pencil gal? Jewel: Oh, as is typical of a writer, I cannot keep hold of a pen, so I borrow whatever. I prefer pen to pencil. StarlaWink: Jewel, how did you decide to put "We Talk" on the cover of A Night Without Armor? Jewel: I didn't, the guy that did the cover art design just sort of put it in there as a sort of mock test randomly, and it kind of never got changed. Nicoleguest_398d8022: How was it touring with the Lilith Fair ? Jewel: Very fun. I enjoyed everyone a lot. Kristy_bug: How do you deal with writer's block?? Jewel: The only time I have writers block is if I'm judging my writing. My friend Steve Poltz says it's impossible to have writer's block, because you can write anything. You can write "The dog sits on the chair" and you're over your writers block. It's only if you have standards of what your writing should be that it chokes.... So just have fun. Erikpsychmajorr: Jewel, do you consider yourself a pop artist or folk musician or poet? Jewel: Hopefully I'll break the definition. And be all of them. Thanks everybody for such a great attendance. I hope you like the book!! TVGEN: Thanks for being here tonight, Jewel. Don't forget about the Jewel Poetry Contest. Visit http://www.tvgen.com/jewel/. Also Jewel's just-released collection of poetry, A Night Without Armor. Goodnight everyone! ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #320 ***************************
