To people outside the media, film, and music industry (or people outside of Los Angeles) it may seem like just another rag cluttering streetside newsstands. However, in local print, there aren't many periodicals that comes close to its unfettered approach to journalism. As a result, NTLA has uncovered some of the most poignant local stories of that last few years. As in the case of their recent story on KCRW that the New York Times even quoted as a headliner (that may or may have not sent "Morning Becomes Eclectic" Program Director and "Sessions at West 54th" host Chris Douridas on his way out). And who could deny the brilliance of their scathing Buzz Magazine story that was a cherry on the top of the "insider" magazine's bankruptcy? Some of the biggest media magnates tread through the the paper cringing with ambivalence that their own name isn't highlighted with a silver tongue. Kevin is a well-known writer in LA and a huge supporter of the local music scene. He did a great story on a local band called Longstocking long before all the indie slickcovers even knew of their arrival. And, most recently, shed some light on the pre-eminent Jim O'Rourke. He doesn't write the most agreeable features but he certainly isn't a dumb music editor [paraphrase]. He did, after all, graduate from Harvard with a degree in literature... If the story provokes thought and offers counterpoint to idealistic views then it was worth my time. True, the bulk of NTLA's stories are often a cynical anti-Hollywood outlook but at least it isn't "safe" journalism. Playing it safe is for the standard fair my grandparents read. Does anyone have the RealAudio file of You Were Meant For Me, the one Sean Penn directed? I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me. Also, I would like to have the entire .mov file of the same song (I want the whole thing, not the clip). Once again, I'd really appreciate it if anyone can help. I was paging through (pun) Teen People Online when I went to take a "Who should be th next Spice Girl" contest (I have this compulsion of doing everything there is to do in a magazine =P*) and I looked at the nominees, and low and behold, there's Jewel, nominated, with a Spice name Pieces of Spice. I myself find it a bit cheesy, and Mike said she should be Vegetarian Spice (not bad, not bad), but I thought some people who like to vote for Jewel in whatever she is nominated for (im not naming names =P*) might want to vote for her. If anyone can help me out, I would be ever so greatful. -been waiting so long- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Jun 1998 00:06:39 EDT From: CornflkGl@aol.com Subject: NJC: EDA Guitar Picks So I was cleaning out my computer desk today, and guess what I found ? EDA picks ! I was one of the original sellers of the picks, and turns out I still have 12 of them. I don't really want or need them, and I'd like to get rid of them quickly. So here's what I'm going to do- 1) I'm donating 2 picks to be used as "doorprizes" for the smoe.org fundraiser. 2) The other 10 will be given away to whoever or whomever offers me something good for them. I WILL NOT TAKE MONEY. I'm thinking more along the lines of concert tapes. I don't expect anything like an original copy of STL ( although if someone offers it.... hee hee... ) . I'm especially interested in any GOOD QUALITY Patty Griffin tapes, but I'll also take any good Jewel concert tapes, videos of rare performances ( like the 1st Rosie show ), etc. Be creative ! I'll also take things like original photos of Jewel or Patty Griffin. I'm kind of odd because I hate sending out tapes to get copies of shows, so I have very few live tapes :/ . Here's how this is gonna work : a) Write to AckPitooey@aol.com with the words "EDA PICKS" in the subject line. I won't read letters with any other subject line :). I also will NOT respond to ANY correspondence to THIS screen name. (CornflkGl) b) If I choose you to get the picks, I'll reply to your email. Otherwise I WON'T reply to you. If you never get a reply, I didn't pick you ;). c) When I choose the person who gets the picks, I'll block that screenname from receiving any email. If your email gets returned to you, I've already chosen someone to get the picks. d) Remember, don't offer money. e) Anyone who has nothing to offer but has a REALLY good story about why they deserve the picks should also write to me :). You never know, I may be moved to give them away for nothing to a needy or funny soul. Good luck everybody !
