Times review/slashing of A Night Without Armour. All I have to say is: "Ouch. That hurts." I don't know what kind of problems this guy has, but he doesn't need to take it out on Jewel's poetry. That was just plain vicious. If I were the editor, I would be embarrassed to put that out. I'm completely appalled by that horrible display of trashy journalism. He obviously knows nothing and is a very disturbed man. Rachael ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 06 Jun 1998 17:30:29 +1200 From: Kim Lees Subject: "Near You Always" video Hi Angels!!! I was just wondering... has anybody else ever seen the video for "Near You Always"... it used to get shown over here (New Zealand) quite often on our late-night music show... what reminded me was that I found the video for the YWMFM remix on the net and noticed that a lot of the same scenes were used in that video... does anyone know anything about it??? as far as I know, "Near You Always" has never been released as a single anywhere, so why would they make a promo video??? or has the video only ever screened in NZ??? any comments... Personally, I really enjoyed ANWA, poetically (and I read a LOT of poetry), but I do realize that I probably would never have seen those poems if they Jewel weren't already a celebrity, which is too bad. As I and I'm sure some other angels know all to well, it is incredibly difficult to become a successful poet. I am in the process of trying right now, and it is not easy. I am not resentful of Jewel for her success poetically, because I feel that she has real talent that deserves credit. Anyway, that's just my $0.02. I say congrats to Jewel for being honest and realistic. As always Peace and Love, Ben ____________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Jun 1998 09:56:20 -0400 From: "Matt Adler" Subject: Re: "Near You Always" video Does anyone know if this video is show in america? Matt ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Jun 1998 10:22:21 EDT From: MAXMOUZE@aol.com Subject: My feedback on the New Times LA article I sent this to the feedback section: Keven McAlester needs to really start taking some Prozac or something. It really bothers me when critics pick a subject and tear it apart for no better reason than to tear it apart. I'm sure if Mr. McAlester TRIED to enjoy listening to Jewel, he would have. But, he was biased to begin with. He complains right from the start that everyone adores her because of her background and her physical beauty and that disgusts him. But, there is more to Jewel than her background and good looks. However, he ignores it because he is so preoccupied with her being liked so much. I'm sure if the world didn't like Jewel, he would have been all for her. Furthermore, he complains about her poetry but it ends up him complaining about poetry in general. So, why would you let someone who hates the idea of poetry review a poetry book? Pretty stupid, if you ask me. What really bothers me is he bitches about Jewel's ability to speak metaphorically and give a message about society in her interviews. Jewel once said that our hands manifest thought, and that nothing happens until we tell it to. She has stated that we can never lose our innocence, for it can never be lost but it needs to be maintained. This stuff really helps people take a place like this world -- a place which we are told is so violent and so evil - -- and give us some hope. Other people don't take interviews seriously, and she relays positive messages to readers. That should be applauded, not mocked. Furthermore, if Keven thinks Jewel isn't a good poet, I'd like to see him try to write some poetry. And, that's all I need to say on THAT. Mark Oxman Bakersfield, CA P.S. By the way, on the issue of Jewel not wanting people to ogle her breasts but wanting her breasts to be admired like her grandmothers -- there's a difference between being a pervert and admiring beauty. Jewel thinks breasts are a beautiful part of the female body, but that does not give men an excuse to indulge in them. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 05 Jun 1998 19:52:47 PDT From: "* Jewel *" Subject: JEWEL ON OPRAH!!! I'm incredibly sorry (well, actually, I'm not sorry at all :)) but I just read the article and I thought it was funny. No, not funny...... flippin's hysterical! I mean, come one guys - this writer (and I use the term loosely, don't get me wrong) is like Howard Stern - he blows his column out his arse for the sole purpose of getting attention. And heck, it worked didn't it? This little shite writer in some no-name paper in LA is now receiving national (actually, international) attention, because of people spreading this article around now. Don't lie to me - we all know that some of us here are going to visit the website again, just to see what he'll write next! As for his actual comments about Jewel... While I don't necessarily agree with what he said (i have the book, and i like the majority of it), he at least supported what he wrote. The man doesn't like poetry - it seems like ALL poetry is taboo for him, not just Jewels. So - lighten up people. There are people in the world that are a lot crappier than this kevin person... believe me, I've dated several of them. :)) Don't let it get to you.. t'ain't worth it :) alana. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 06 Jun 1998 11:53:22 PDT From: "Michelle Thomas" Subject: Old Lover's House lyrics I had been looking everywhere for the lyrics for Old Lover's House and couldn't find them.
