Subject: New poetry not found in the book, but in CD 

Hey Angels,
     Three tracks of poems found on the CD are NOT found in the book:
Track 5: It Is Like A Dream
Track 36: Las Vegas
Track 68: Preparing Myself

I tried to match the pages to the tracks so I can read Jewel's poetry, while
listening to her say it. I also noticed that Jewel changes her poems a little
by changing a couple words, and I even noticed she added a whole paragraph
(stanza???) to one of her poems, but I don't remember which one. 

I have checked and doubled checked to make sure that these poems are the only
poems NOT found in the book..

Ain't It Cool News, a website dedicated to leading-edge news about
movies in production, has several blurbs about RWD on their site.  Ain't
It Cool has the knack for getting independent reporters and spys to report
from movie locations and private screenings to get inside information
about how things are going.  

The good news, according to them, is the Ride With the Devil has the
potential to be a great movie.  Sets, costumes, script, cast and of course
the director are all first rate.  Ain't It Cool dubs it "Gone With the
Wind, 90210", because of the age and appeal of the actors.

	pop star poetry is a tricky craft, and jewel knows it.
	at one end of the spectrum you've got bob dylan, whose songs can be stripped
of their sounds and remain lyrical masterpieces.  as rich assemblages of word
and rhythm, they're artful enough to land in textbooks.
	at the other end, you've got someone like the late jim morrison, whose
rickety stream-of-consciousness belches have been resurrected, dissected and
sold in lavishly bound complications--free verse that should have stayed away.
	jewel is a many-tentacled performer: her introspective pop-folk debut, pieces
of you, has sold millions of copies since it's release in 1995.  she'll head
to the studio in late summer to record it's follow-up, which should hit stores
before christmas.
	she has starred as dorothy in a much-lauded production of the wizard of oz at
new york's lincoln center, and she has the lead role in a civil war-era saga,
due out in march 1999.  it will be directed by ang lee (the ice storm).
	but for now at least, jewel is bathing in her first love: poetry.  the new a
night without armor (harpercollins, $15) is a 138-page collection of inward-
looking material written in the last eight years.  the artist, born jewel
kilcher, has written poetry since childhood, but decided to start saving it
when she was 15.
	the publisher is also issuing a cd with jewel reading her work, which offers
glimpses of life on the road and includes underlying spiritual themes.
	KNOWING JEWEL
	"i never thought anybody would ever hear them," jewel,24, said of her poems.
but after navigating through stardom and finding herself in a place were
devote fans cling to her every utterance, she felt compelled to release them.
	although the work is more sophisticated than "you were meant for me/ and i
was meant for you," the book is likely to elicit mixed critiques from hard-

nosed reviewers.
	she understands why other writers would bemoan the book or claim she's
exploiting her position while they struggle to get published.
	"i'd say they're right," she said.  "and i wouldn't say it's a very cynical
view--i think it's a very realistic view.  i know i couldn't have gotten a
book of poetry out before this album.  if my album hadn't been as
successful as
it was, there would've been very little interest in my poetry book."
	SIMPLE WORK
	who cites pablo neruda and charles bukowski as influences, talked last week
by phone about:
	defining her own work: "the poetry is very simple.  i never wrote my poetry
thinking people would hear it.  i wrote it just out of my own need to
understand what was going on in my life, and out of my own fascination with
imagination, fairy tales and that kind of thing."
	where she fits among contemporary poets: "i don't know.  i don't even know
how i fit into contemporary music.  it's an anomaly to me that a folk album
would have done so well.  when i think about that i get a little overwhelmed.
there are such good writers out there, and i did hesitate to put out the book
because i know i am not schooled.  i know i'm not.  i know i'm not an educated
writer.  i know that being honest touches people, and so i just try to do
that..."
	the significance of the book's title, a night without armor: "poetry for me
is the most honest expression that i can find--it's the most immediate
expression.  sometimes the music, the lyric can become diluted or less
significant next to the melody or the band or the ambience of a room.  whereas
poetry, it's just the word and silence."

'ARMOR'--JEWEL IN THE ROUGH

	who will save her sales?   
	if leann rimes and hanson can sell millions of copies of their "early

recordings," than it stands to reason that jewel fans would relish the chance
to hear her pre-pieces of you compositions.
	that's the marketing logic behind harpercollins/harper audio's book,
audiotape and cd release of a night without armor, a collection of poems
written by the 24-year-old alaskan singer-songwriter in journals and
diaries dating back to her teen years.	
	the cassette and cd, feature jewel reading 87 short, carefully enunciated,
soul-
baring poems.  titles range from such as as a child i walked ("as a child i
walked with noisy fingers/ along the hemline of so many meadows back home")
and the inertia of a lonely heart to such explicit memoirs as parking lot and
camouflage ("a gay man is sitting in a hotel lobby smoking a cigarette/ he
stimachs my breasts dutifully like spinach or lima beans or other things that
make one sick/ because he fears the rednecks at the bar are on to him").
	it would be easy to criticize her poetry as doleful dollops of mixed
metaphors, forced imagery and melodrama--but then, the appeal of a night
without armor is that it offers a glimpse of jewel as a work in progress.  as
she reads in i have been called naive: "some things must remain simple/ some
things must remain untouched and pure, lest we all forget the legacy which
begot us/ the health of our orgions/ the poetry of our fundamental selves."
	but the downside is: thus far, all we've  been allowed to hear is jewel's
formative work.  her follow-up to 1995 pieces of you, which consisted of songs
written when she was barely 20--is long overdue (it's tentatively slated for
november).  instead of letting her naturally develop over the course of
successive albums, her record company has made the financially beneficial
decision to flog pieces of you from a merely promising debut to a multi-
platinum career album (8 million sales and counting).
	anyone whose seen her in concert knows that even before who will save your
soul became a hit, jewel was performing marvelous new songs ranging from the
sardonic race car driver to the dylanesque sometimes it be that way that
reflected her maturing perspective and musical development.
	but since the record industry is desperate for superstars (how else do you
explain matchbox 20?), her artistic growth is readily being sacrificed for
sales.  that's less of a problem for veteran acts with a few albums  and tours
under their belts; but for clearly talented young artists like jewel, that
mind-set hinders vision and catapults newcomers to an artificially induced
level of significance.
	a night without armor may increase jewels multimedia visibility and rack up
record-setting audiobook sales--but it's little more that another portrait of
the artist in a holding pattern. 


i thought that was harsh and mean for someone who is just expressing her
feelings and is getting criticized for it.  just my $.02.

Okay, I don't let Entertainment weekly get to me, that SPIN article was
alright, but that New Times LA article was just plain rude. 

It's been quite a while since I've seen a writer with such a lack of class, as
well as writing ability. Obeviously only interested in Jewel's breasts, the
writer, Keven McAlester, just doesn't get it. He doesn't understand Jewel the
way we do, and by calling Jewel a "rotten apple of a songwriter", he
obeviously can't tell when he stumbles across a great song writer. 

Anyway, I don't know if a boycot of New Times LA would be called for, since I
have no idea who they are, and how popular the organization is, but if you
feel the way I do, I defenately think you should send them an e-mail
expressing your disgust with the article.

    I just checked out the article, and it was indeed in poor taste.  I'm
not sure about the URL being a deliberate attempt at pissing off Jewel fans,
though - it appears as if "Bad Teeth" is the name of a weekly opinion column
by the Music Editor, Keven Macelester.  As far as their distribution & how
popular they are, it doesn't look like they're that huge... their web page
says they're part of the Phoenix chain of newspapers, which means, if
they're anything like the Boston Phoenix or the Worcester Phoenix, they're
not all that big... most people I know skim them, and then throw them away.
Plus, their distribution is listed as ~100,000 copies... comparatively, I'd
say that's pretty low subscription rates.  I could be wrong about that,
though.

    But, keep in mind, what was written was an editorial piece, the guy's
entitled to his opinion, no matter how grossly uninformed and ignorant he
may be.  :)  Unfortunately, bad taste isn't against the law, (Of course, I'd
probably be in jail, if it was... :) but then, neither is sending the New
Times LA an irate letter or three hundred.  :)  Take comfort, though!  If
you read the "About The Newspaper" part on their web site, here's what it
says:
        "Rounding out the impressive staff are reporters Ron Russell, winner
of the California Bar Association's Silver Medal Award for legal reporting;
Susan Goldsmith, whose hard-hitting exposes have uncovered corruption in the
Southern California transit system; =====> Music Editor Kevin McAlester, an
expert on the city's rich jazz and pop music scenes <======; and Meredith
Brody, an L.A. restaurant critic and storyteller almost two decades."

    Apparently, he's never won any awards for his writing, either.  Or
written a hard-hitting expose'.  He's just "an expert" (what makes him an
expert?  Qualifications, please.) on the jazz and pop music scenes.  I'm
guessing his qualifications as a journalist are fairly slim to non-existent.
He was rude in his editorial, but what it comes down to is this - this guy
ain't got it figured out, and never will.
