(of course, any volunteers are welcome, don't wait for me to ask you) next, we need information, resources, volunteer opportunities, etc. eventually i would like to build a database, seearchable of course, with all sorts of goodies. for now, though, a simple list of links, with short blurbs on what they are, organized by category will be sufficient. anyone who wishes to help out, even if just a little, here's some advice on how: 1. go to your favorite search engine and look for one of these following ideas... volunteer opportunities, non-profit resources, non-profit organizations, community services, etc. be creative. sites like yahoo have huge catagories like these. 2. just bookmark the sites and send me a list of them. if you want to help a bit more, give me a list of the sites URLs with a short one or two sentence description of what it is, and send it to me. i'll take care of organizing it, so don't worry about that. anyone who helps will be given ample credit for their efforts. meanwhile, i will continue to research my own leads. any of you who'd like to help, please let me know. you don't have to make a huge commitment. just a little bit of time. i know a lot of you have 10 or 20 minutes of online time to spare while you chat or check mail. i know i do. so, if you have any questions, drop me an email, and i'll be glad to get back to you. that's all for now :) always crazy, chris ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jun 1998 17:25:10 -0700 (PDT) From: Flower Child Subject: Jewel: An Everyday Angel Hi EDA's, Today at my school's book fair, I almost died when i saw a book sitting on the shelf sawing JEWEL! I grabed it and got it. It's a unauthoized biography, it's got 16 pages of coloured photos and it was the last one there. It's by Tracy West. I'm finished it aready, it was mosty stuff i know, but it's good. There's a chapter just about us, EDA. It cost $5.30 CANADA. Talk to you later, Jenna The guitar Playing, Jewel Singing, Irish Dancing Angel "Every Body is A nice Body."- Jewel Flowerchild_84@yahoo.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Jun 1998 20:10:33 PDT From: "Kelly Goodlad" Subject: Obsession On the topic of obsession... I really hate the word. I think in this world it's somehow uncool to be too 'into' something. Now, in some cases, obsession truly IS obsession and if you start to lose yourself in something, that's dangerous. But what people sometimes call obsession...passion--great things can come of that. In the case of Jewel--celebrities can be a great source of inspiration, and ultimately, if you're wise, you don't model yourself entirely after them or idolize them, but rather learn from them as you'd learn from your uncle or your dog. Kelly >that's something to be proud of. I'm D**N well proud of being obsessed w/ >Jewel! And NO ONE should make fun of me OR anyone else about it! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Jun 1998 20:08:40 -0700 From: "Larry G." Subject: Jewel in August "Guitar One" Magazine June 2, 1998 I haven't been keeping up with my list postings, so I don't know if this has been reported yet, but Jewel is featured as part of an article entitled "Ascent of the Woman: An Inside Look at 10 Chart-Topping Ladies," a cover story in the August issue of Guitar One Magazine. There's a b&w picture of Jewel on the cover (an old one), and two pictures inside (page 56: alone, in a yellow jacket; and page 58: standing, with Sheryl Crow). In addition, POY is pictured on a "time-line" called "Women in Time: A Chronology of Significant Recordings," which includes 22 recordings starting in 1971 with Janis Joplin's "Pearl" and ending with Natalie Imbruglia's "Left of the Middle." (POY is incorrectly pegged into 1996, and I, for one, would have had a much different list.) The portion about Jewel is brief and has nothing that isn't common knowledge to EDAs. The text: "WHO: Jewel Kilcher took her organic upbringing and masterfully translated it into the ultimate major label debut: Many of the tracks off of "Pieces of You" feature nothing but her finely tuned vocal chops and delicate acoustic guitar work. Jewel grew up in Homer, Alaska in a house that -- among other missing amenities -- had no shower and no TV (the only bathroom was outdoors -- a freezing-cold outhouse). Her parents offset their homestead's lack of modern conveniences by playing music and singing around the house. From the age of six, Jewel performed alongside her singing/songwriting parents on stage and on the road, yodeling up a storm as a featured part of her parents' set. Unfortunately her parents later divorced, but Jewel kept her musical flame burning bright by touring with her father, singing in bars and restaurants over the next seven years. MAKING MUSIC: ‘After my parents got divorced, I started writing poetry a lot because I didn't always know how to express myself. That, to me, is the real beauty of writing: It makes you more intimate with yourself.' TURNING POINT: ‘Despite my surroundings, I felt a lot of social pressure to figure out what I was gonna do with the rest of my life. I had no desire to go to college, but I also felt no peace in traveling or just bumming around. I got a number of dead-end jobs; got fired a couple of times. I was frightened and a little depressed. The idea of spending my life in a nine-to-five job made me feel trapped and hopeless. My two years [at Interlochen Fine Arts Academy] were a turning point. I saw a bigger world. I immersed myself in everything -- drama, dance, sculpture, music.' ON THE ROAD: ‘One of my favorite things to do is sit and watch people walking by. I remember the details of what people look like -- their expressions, their posture, their words. I make up their lives to be tragic or boring or brilliant or normal.' "Guitar One" is published by Cherry Lane Magazines. They have an e-mail address at . Seeya! -=-Larry-=- ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #304 ***************************
