(I got some updated facts here) OK....as the subject says, WHO exactly (who OFFICIALLY now) said that Jewel's next CD was going to be a *Christmas* CD? Huh? :-) Who? Who officially? While earlier posts to the list quoting somewhat wrong newspaper and web articles (how unusual ;-) said "Christmas", the first unofficial person/EDA to say "Christmas-themed" CD was Sean, and both are incorrect. No OFFICIAL source said "Christmas"....the following is from MrBB's post AND the official Jewel web site (IT was from a press release, according to the web site): > The album will focus on the spirituality and reverence of the > winter holiday season & will feature all original songs, most of > which have never been performed live . > The album will include arias, lullabies and some of the lyrics > were penned in Latin. > Even though this next album will celebrate the holiness of the > holidays, her usual social and political themes will run throughout > the material. The "winter holiday season" covers a wide range here. It does NOT mean Christmas. I knew that as the "Christmas CD " talk carried on on this list, people who were not paying close enough attention or just joining the list would think that the CD was going to be a mostly Christmas CD. I cannot blame them for then thinking that. I was also concerned that people of a non-Christmas celebrating faith may be somewhat dismayed by the alleged one-themed content of Jewel's next CD (not that there would be anything wrong with Jewel doing a Christmas CD someday) So, to get some OFFICIAL input on this, earlier this afternoon I called Bibi Bielat (for those new here, Bibi is Jewel's close friend, Creative Director etc....among other duties, she designs the Jewel merchandise and she does the official Jewel web site). I'll quote her exactly...... "There's not going to be any Christmas songs on this CD". As a matter of fact, and I cannot and won't elaborate, there WILL be *some* songs recorded for this CD that many of you have heard Jewel sing before...the post/website DOES say "will feature all original songs, most of which have never been performed live"....."ALL original songs, MOST of which have never been performed live". That means all are Jewel songs (did anyone think Jewel is now going to write a bunch of new Christmas songs?) and that also means SOME we've heard before. (Bibi mentioned some songs...I can't say what they were and NO ONE can, but it's as official as one can get at this point that some stuff we've heard will be recorded) Please note this item too (again): > The album will include arias, lullabies and some of the lyrics >were penned in Latin. > her usual social and political themes will run throughout >the material. A few people have posted about the "classical" content of the next CD. Huh??? Where did that come from? I figure it must've come from the mention of "arias". Well....yes, some classical numbers have arias in them, but a vast majority of arias aren't at all "classical", certainly not in the truest form of the category. I really don't think this CD will have any symphonies, concertos or Jewel's "Ode To PoY" on it. So, as MANY of the more common sensed posts have said, why not wait until the CD comes out before expressing disappointment in it? Heck, it's not even going to be recorded for over two months. In a nutshell....from all gathered, the CD will contain at least some stuff we've all heard, some new stuff she hasn't publicly sang yet (that will be winter season themed) , some new stuff covering a wide range of the political and social issues such as she's covered before. For all we know, the "winter holiday season"/holiness themed songs could be just about anything. Remember, last December she/Atlantic sent that "Angel Standing By" single disc (entitled "A Christmas CD by Jewel") to the radio stations/media as a holiday themed 'thanx" to the media, and that song has about as much to do with Christmas as a song about shoveling snow does. Would anyone here object if Angel Standing By hadn't been on Pieces Of You and ended up on her next CD? I don't think so. To many, that is their favorite song on PoY. :-) The next CD.....it may be fantastic, it may be good, it may be so-so, it may suck. One of those descriptives will apply to each and every one of us when we finally get to hear it. I may think it's good, Joe may think it's fantastic, Alison may think it's so-so, and Mary may think it sucks. Let's wait until November :-) I personally think it's going to be fantastic. So many folks here on this list, Mr Hooks included, were so dismayed when Jewel started up with the band, and started to gain popularity..."we are going to lose her". Posts flew by on this list about two years ago, long before many of you ever had heard of Jewel....how Jewel was leaving her roots....getting a band...."the "old Jewel is gone"...."she's selling out". Now, they announce a new CD that sounds *for certain* that she won't be "selling out" with a band, a CD that will possibly be "quiet" and down to earth like PoY was, and not more band-oriented like "Fritz Creek Store" was shaping up to be. Yet moderate complaints still rolled in. Sheeeesh!!! Let's wait until November :-) I can't wait!! Mike "Let's wait, but I can't wait" Connell P.S. This was not intended to be a flame towards ANYONE whose previously posted about the next CD by Jewel....things just "snowballed" (pun not intended). I just saw a lot of misinformation being posted, and I had to do my best to get some facts, and get them out to you all. * If you are new to the Jewel list and need a helping hand * The Jewel EveryDay Angels List Homepage & Guide is at: * http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup * * If you have any Jewel list related questions, please feel free * to email me at ducksoup@spectra.net * or you can IM me on either of the AOL names below: * DuckOfPrey or WhyADuck55 on AOL or AOL Instant Messenger ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 May 1998 11:23:49 -0700 (MST) From: wderby@aztec.asu.edu (WES C. To participate, simply be an AOL member & type in keyword "Live!" This begins at 8:00 PM EST. Jewel will chat again live through the TVGen & Yahoo Websites the following Monday night, June 8th. This is open to anyone with Net access. I'm not sure of the Yahoo URL, but I'm sure it'll get posted in plenty of time. This is also an opportunity to voice your opinion with good questions! I'm also curious if any of those who seem so upset with Jewel's direction also have the ability to intelligently question her directly about it. Should be interesting.... Someone on the list should log the entire chat & post it afterwards for all the EDA's who miss it. Maybe I'm busting on somebody's golden calf here, but I think some of >y'all are getting a little too possessive (and worshipful) of Jewel and her >music. Okay. Hello angels, did I somehow misrepresent myself here? I think I've said before, I don't worship Jewel one little bit. I just don't think everyone should jump to conclusions about her new album, good or bad. I've said before and gotten flamed for it, that I think Jewel is simply human. She's a beautiful person and most definately one my idols but PLEASE don't say I'm possessive and worshipful, that's almost insulting because it sounds so blind. I'd hope I'm not like that. I don't have to like everything she does either and I must say, when I heard "holiday album" my heart totally fell. But I really sincerely and honestly DO NOT think we should say "OMG, it's a holiday album, how COULD SHE". If there's one thing that would ruin her unique and Jewelness, it's if she started producing songs to please US. IMO she should write her songs for herself; that's what makes them so beautiful after all. So I think we should be optimistic and excited about her new album cause it could turn out to be all that, we shouldn't be totally negetive and selfish like, "how could she DO that". If some one is disappointed with the changes in Jewel's next album, its there opinion which they are entitled to have. Several people >> have written me (privately) who are very upset at Sean & others >> agree with him & wanted me to know it! Ah, Sean, always keeping the list from being complacent! :-) I think anyone who attended JewelStock or heard some of the 1995-1997 concerts where Jewel was honing these songs will feel a poignant loss at the announcement. I know that for me, at least, I identify Jewel very strongly with these works, because they made up the majority of her repertoire at the time I was becoming a fan. But another thought: does anyone out there think that the album (if released) would sound as good as the performances she gave at JewelStock, which are captured on tape for every EDA? I've talked to Alan and some of the other people involved in this event, and have concluded that the people who mixed and mastered these recordings were very sensitive to the music and the 'feel' of the performances. I doubt very much if a multitrack, processed-and-EQ'ed FCS would have the gutsy live feel of the JewelStock recordings. Even POY, cool as it is for a mostly-live collection, sounds a lot more polished. Think about what you really want: authentic live Jewel, or the producers' (possibly excellent) idea of multitrack studio Jewel? There's no shame in preferring the studio recordings, but I know how I feel about 'live' Jewel. I don't like the thought of losing these historic sessions either, but at least we have been gifted with more than just memories and reminiscences... :-) - -- | Greg Dunn | "There was never a moment you | | gregdunn@indy.net | ever got within a hundred | | GregDunn@aol.com | million miles of my soul." | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn/ | Patty Griffin | ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 May 1998 14:01:59 -0400 (EDT) From: Albert Sze-Wei Wang Subject: Jewel's cancelled albums, POY, etc. Hi folks, I thought in light of all the posts on the topic of the release date of Jewel's new album, it was time I said something. Early on, I was one of the few people who complained about the length of time it was taking Jewel to release a new album. It was a lost opportunity that came and went and the window opened and closed. It's done and there's nothing that can be done about it. Bitching about it now won't do a damn thing to change the present situation. I am not at all pleased at Atlantic by the delay, and the absolute lack of insight on their part at timing. But as with all things in life, things continue to move, to change and progress forward. At present a new window is starting to open, and certainly with her poetry book and poetry CDs, Jewel is once again starting to make her presence felt. There is definitely potential for driving things to a fever pitch again, certainly at least back into the consciousness of the general populous, but we'll certainly see again in a month or two. As far as Pieces of You, Jewel is a great observer of the world. She carries within her great insight about herself and what she sees in people. In my experience I have found that very few people can do that, and even less can understand that gift. Though the songs in "Pieces of You" from a neutral observer's standpoint may not be as powerfully soulful or as personally tormenting as Tara MacLean's "Silence," Pieces of You is far from shallow. It explores the whole question of human nature, and she gives us hints of herself, what she believes, and what she sees. She even gives us songs that are personal to her in getting through her more difficult times. I'm sorry, but from where I sit, anyone who thinks POY is shallow just doesn't get it. Some people might consider some of Jewel's music sappy. Screw them. There is an honesty that comes from her character and her being and that's what I see in her music. I am a bigger fan of Jewel the human being than I am of Jewel the musician. In many ways, the musician, or the actress, or the poet are only small facets of Jewel the human. It's a very Hindu perspective I guess. The Hindus believe in one god, but believe that that god has different facets that manifest themselves and so they show reverence to certain sides of that single diety. In many ways we all have those facets of ourselves when we're doing different things or when we're with different people. And I know that's the thing most people don't get, don't understand. Instead they obsess about her breasts, or her teeth, or stupid shit like whether she's snobby now or the types of clothes she wears. I'm sorry to say this, but get over it guys. Really. Accept Jewel for who she is and stop trying to make her into something she isn't. Accept the gifts of her music, her poetry, and her words as evidence of who she is. She cares about us, why can't we just accept that gift and care for her? I have faith in Jewel. Do you? That's really all it comes down to isn't it? Think about that.
