I've just arrived on this list and that's my first post here. Seems the discussion thread is currently 'first time'. So, First time I hear (and heard about) Jewel was her video of FG, on a deutch sat tv, Onyx. That was sounding pretty good, until I saw another video (WWSYS I think) and I did not like her attitude on it... But, after seeing again FG video a month later, I decided to buy the CD (In US, because the European Album was not released at this time). Two videos and an album was enough to become a EDA. But angelfood is pretty hard to find here, there is no singles, just this European album, and that's because Jewel is almost unknown here... Never heard of her, just heard, and appreciated. Additionally, some nice EDA in Winnipeg asked me to tape the MuchMusic spotlight because she had promised too but only had one VCR. She disappeared from email though. I've mailed three copies of that. I have since taped the Jewel Wizard of Oz thing too. If you'd like a copy of either of these, I'm going home from university this weekend and will have access to two VCRs in order to make copies. Please drop me a note. [FInally: I never received Future Folklore 3...and never got an email reply from Brandee, the Canadian arm. (I did send her a tape.) Can someone help me out with this one?] thanks, Paul ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 May 1998 08:42:58 -0400 From: Peter Subject: Entertainment Weekly Review of ANWA http://cgi.pathfinder.com/ew/review/0,1683,,00.html A new book review from Entertainment Weekly every Wednesday Wednesday, May 27, 1998 A NIGHT WITHOUT ARMOR Jewel (HarperCollins, $15) Long before she sold 10 million records, Jewel Kilcher wrote poems. Now, in the tradition of Ezra Pound and Ally Sheedy, the 24-year-old singer presents 109 of them for your reading pleasure. Don’t expect any roses-are-red stuff: Jewel takes on loneliness, lechery (“The father tries to bond with his teenage boy by ogling my breasts”), war (“My dad went to Vietnam when he was 19 years old. I think it bruised his soul.”), and puberty (“I look at young girls now...and I think I’ve been there) with tenderness and lots of exclamation points. She also rhymes “cripples” with “nipples” and misspells Tom Waits’ name. But her best poems, raw autobiographical sketches that chronicle her Alaskan upbringing, hint that Jewel is just a polish away from shining. The first time I ever heard Jewel was at the Kendall Cafe in Cambridge, Mass. I guess that was in 1994, but I don't really recall exactly when. I had a friend who wanted to go and didn't have anyone to go with her (read: drive her there..) and being a good sport (not to mention having a major crush on her at the time!) we headed out. I was completely blown away. She was the most amazing singer I had heard in a long time. (And bear in mind I hear alot as I used to do a lot of work for a local Boston music magazine (Lollipop for those of you from here..)) Needless to say, I was hooked. I've seen Jewel every time she has been in the Boston area and I've even travelled a few times to see her (once in Northhampton, Mass and I was blessed enough to have made it to the Irving Plaza show in New York). Her voice and her music have never failed to move me. ...Trevor ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 May 1998 09:39:17 EDT From: ABershaw Subject: MrBB - Living Room Tour(LRT) History Class 101 In a message dated 5/27/98 3:54:17 AM, Michael wrote asking me: >Hi di ho! >I'm writing to ask you about LRT's or living room tours. What are they exactly? >where are they held? , and are there any other useful tidbits of info you could >give me on the subject- Hi Michael & all other EDAs interested, Here's an old post I sent to another list when they asked the same question. I updated it slightly. Hi all, For those interested in the LRT phenomenon, here's how it all began. Back in April of 97, my friends Cindy Lee Berryhill & Elizabeth Hummel were on a US tour together & doing a gig in Cambridge, MA. Their next gig, two nights later, was scheduled for Albany, NY (a very long drive). They discovered that the Albany venue mistakenly advertised their gig on the wrong date, so rather than drive all that way for a certain wash-out gig, they contacted members of the Jewel list & suggested doing an impromptu gig in the Boston area, if The EDAs could provide a venue & there was enough interest. Amazingly, within 24 hours The Snyder family in Boston volunteered their home & approximately 25 people from around New England (including my wife & I) descended on the Snyders home with food, drink & piles of audio & video equipment. At first, everyone was a little anxious not knowing what to really expect, especially the musicians. As we eased into the performance, everybody relaxed & began totally getting into the spontenaity of the moment. This intimate approach dramatically changed the dynamics between performer & audience. The musicians were totally getting off on the fact that everyone really was there to listen & the audience experienced a "one on one" closeness not experienced in a "traditional setting" type performance. Total communication between us all inspired Cindy Lee & Elizabeth to play for almost 4 solid hours & everyone (including them) left a bit stunned & amazed at how great it was! It was certainly the most memorable night of their tour. Shortly after this, the musicians, myself & several other friends here on this list, began discussing the viability of doing a revolutionary approach to touring & somehow facilitate more of what happenned in Boston. The idea was to cut out "all the suits", ie, management, promoters, agents, etc., & book a summer tour directly into fans homes. I won't get into all the details but this was done & it was a huge success! Shows were booked in various EDA homes around the NorthEast, promoted by fans on the Internet & attended by hundreds of people over the course of the tour. Every date was incredibly special in its own way. Some shows were actually in living rooms & several were outdoors in yards. Each attendee paid $10 toward the musicians. After that first LRT, word began circulating around San Diego & Boston's musician-communities & interest from many others began. Since that time, many other great musicians have taken the plunge & thoroughly enjoyed it! Several West Coast LRTs have taken place since then as well as sporadic Midwest LRTs & a few more in the Boston area. This "LRT Concept" has taken focus primarily with San Diego & Boston area musicians, but is always expanding. Musicians who've participated in LRT gigs include members of The Rugburns, Joy Eden Harrison, Gregory Page, Lisa Sanders, Mary Dolan, Randi Driscoll, Cindy Wasserman, Peggy Watson, Jody Blackwell, Jenny Bruce, Kevin So, Renatta Bratt & of course Elizabeth Hummel & Cindy Lee Berryhill. Almost everything so far has been recorded & there exists an extensive archive of the LRTs so far. Some video clips will eventually be on various websites & some of the recordings have been released (with authorization) on my "Future Folklore" tape series, which itself was inspired by that 1st "LRT gig" in Boston. This "LRT scene" continues to generate incredible interest. Many musicians have expressed interest for future LRT's, including fairly high profile artists like Freedy Johnston, Patty Griffin & Tara MacLean. Every musician who's done it, definately wants to do it again. Thus concludes your LRT History-101 lesson. Considering that my mind is still pretty much a blank since I just crawled out of bed, this probably won't be a very thought-provoking message or anything.... but I thought that since some people have been talking about Jewel's crooked teeth, I'd put my 2 cents in. First off.... unless my eyes are playing tricks on me, Jewel only has one tooth that's crooked... it's the only one I've ever noticed anyway... and it's such a minor thing that I can't believe that some magazine interviewer would actually bring it up. Jewel also has a slightly mis-shapen nose if i'm not mistaken.... but once again, that's very insignificant. She is still stunningly beautiful, and in all the times that I've been watching her on TV, gazing at her and admiring her and trying not to drool all over my couch, those imperfections were the furthest things from my mind. She is so beautiful that I don't even notice those things. Well, that's what I have to say about that. Bye for now! Steve P.S. Oh yeah, I forgot... someone was also mentioning something about Jewel's weight.....I've never noticed anything wrong with her weight.... she has a great body! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 May 1998 07:57:28 PDT From: "Kerry *jo*" Subject: My first time =0) The first time I met Jewel was I think one of the happiest days of my life =0) about 3 or 4 years ago I was just coming home from a Cure concert when me and my friends decided to stop for coffee. We heard live music coming from the coffee shop and decided it would be a pretty good place to go. We sat down and listend to this music that touched my heart in a way I think no other words have. By the end of the set I was crying and my friends were all laughing at me. I knew I just had to meet this mysterious angel known only as Jewel. So when she sat down at a table I took my chance. She was so sweet and I fell in love =0) She gave me the cd save the linoleum and signed it =0) and drew this angel on it! PLUS I got to talk to her for about an hour and a half!! I went and tracked down PoY and have been hooked ever since. Her music makes me cry, makes me happy and the song Angel Standing By can sooth me at any sad point in my life. I think it is amazing that this beautiful person can change so many lives! I just want to send my personal thanx to all the EDA's out there! You people are wonderful I am still in search of the song Nikos if anyone has it also I would adore a live copy of ANWA but I know you all have been begged for one so I don't expect it!
