I was watching a lot of Much Music those days... and You Were Meant For Me seemed to ALWAYS BE ON (LP version)... I couldn't stand it! It would come on, the TV would go off. I have no explanation for this bizarre and irrational behavior. It's not like I don't like female singers or acoustic guitars... I must have been somehow mentally unwell. So the REAL first time I heard Jewel was over the phone. My girlfriend's 12 year old brother had bought the CD, and she listened to it. At first she wasn't sure what to make of the drastically fluctuating vocal styles... but a few listens set us both straight. Pop music tends to suck, but Jewel is amazing. A Jewel in the rough, as it were. ^_^ | Jesse Dangerously http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~ad309 | subterranean seraph 16 Trust Everyone | ad309@chebucto.ns.ca Ekam Sat, Viprah Bahudha Vadanti | ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 May 1998 22:38:02 -0700 (PDT) From: 90 blackwell Subject: so what's the deal? hey babydolls, What's the deal with where jewel was born. Earlier, I posted a message announcing my willingness to archive JewelSites and to map them through a thematic web. And I'd like to start this communication by pointing-out that's there's way (underline) way too much personal information about her family available to an experienced websurfer, especially considering the prominence that she has achieved in our modern culture. Somebody really should address this problem; After all, we do live in the modern world. Which leads me to my question; Almost right down the middle of what appears to be the Land Trust set-up by her grandfather; About halfway between this season's beetle infestation and Aunt Mossy's B&B; Is a dead-end street called University Road. But, there doesn't appear to be a University on University Road. Does anybody know how it got it's name? Was her grandfather trying to recruit a University only to have it locate downtown? And, since I've brought-up her illustrious grandfather... He is being described as upset and disgusted with the bureuacracy surrounding the death of 60,000 forested acres... Does anyone know if there are any plans for Jewel to do a benefit in an effort to help finance his proposed maple forest or to help with the cleanup? After all, I bet she could drag Sting and MTV up there with her; If it's done right, EE Rd could rival Vermont in Maple Syrup production; Keep Passing Open Windows; R ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 May 1998 10:30:55 +0000 From: angerica@ndirect.co.uk Subject: First sighting Hey EDA'S! Ok, beat this. I read an article about Jewel, which went on about how HUGE she was in America. So i thought there must be some reason why she's so massive, and i went and bought her album WITHOUT EVER HEARING HER SING A WORD!!! And i've never looked back since..... Anyway, this is a long story. okay, I was watching the awards to see if Meril Bainbridge (my fav. at the time) was going to be there and she was but then Jewel came out.She was an announcer and I heard everybody cheering for her. That name sounded kinda weird and I kept asking my self, "Who's Jewel!!" I was getting very frustrated. So anyway, the next day I was watching "The Box" and the Jewel's video came on. I seen the name and I said, "Hey now's my chance to see who she is and how she sings" I thought she sang pretty good. The next day some obsessed fan kept ordering that video over and over again. I didn't hesitate to watch. Until I noticed that I was totally in LOVE with her music. I had to have everything. And well, Here I am. That my story. {\O/} /_\ Diana an EDA FOREVER!! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 May 1998 02:44:40 PDT From: "David Trinh" Subject: Re: Crooked Teeth & first time First time I heard Jewel was on the now defunct One FM (96.1) of Sydney, I loved Who Will Save Your Soul but I missed who sang it so it just stuck in my head for a while. Then I heard Who Will Save Your Soul on Rick Dees one day and decided to go out and buy the album. On the car ride over I heard You Were Meant For Me in a friend's car. (THE ONLY other Jewel Fan back then [important later in the story]) I was sure about getting the CD now. I sat at the bus stop just reading the lyrics and poems waiting for the bus (it was a VERY hot day and one bus had been cancelled). When I got home I listened to it twice. For the next few weeks (months?) I badgered my friends about listening to her but she hardly made a dent with Who Will Save Your Soul in Australia. They got sick of me badgering them and soon began listening to her just to hear what I was ranting and raving about. At this time You Were Meant For Me was breaking big time so they FINALLY knew who it was. Which brings me to... >Subject: Crooked Teeth? > >Is it true that Jewel has crooked teeth? I've seen Jewel quite a few >times, but I've never noticed her teeth. Not that I think it >matters, I'm just wondering if I'm going blind. In my opinion, not >that anybody cares, I think she does have crooked teeth (especially on the right side...I think it is). There is one very noticeable one, I think its shown on the YWMFM video somewhere. I remeber a while back when talking to friends (they had JUST heard Who Will Save Your Soul). A friend had borrowed the CD and came back saying Quote: "Your sadistic, I couldn't listen past Pieces Of You" This started a discussion where in the middle a friend light heartedly said: "I just think she's evil 'cos of her tooth that's sticking out". So in a very long winded way, she does have a crooked tooth or teeth I think, it's pretty visible to me but I'm blind as a bat sometimes (or times watchful as a hawk but most of the time a bat). ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 May 1998 06:36:32 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: Jewel WAS born in Utah (was Re: so what's the deal? ) Aurorah wrote: > What's the deal with where jewel was born. So which is >it? Utah or Alaska? Gosh, I just posted on this about two or three days ago :-) It's Utah....Payson Utah. MrBB and I had to do a lot of list-"damage control" a year ago when she said Alaska on that Snyder show, and we knew this would happen again when we found out that the A Night Without Armor flap said Alaska too. Well over a year ago, when MrBB was involved with writing the "Early Jewel History" that is now on my web page, Lenedra (Jewel's mother) informed him that she was indeed born in Utah. The info had been out for a few years (I recall reading it LONG ago), but likely never confirmed. The information is even on the official Jewel web page at http://www.jeweljk.com I've a feeling that we'll be dealing with this for years to come....the media is so enamoured with her being from Alaska, I'm sure we'll be reading "Alaskan born Jewel....." as long as she's in the public limelight. At first, Jewel totally wasn't catching on (which I don't get because WWSYS is awesome), so after two videos they decided to try something different... slow it down, unplug it. Makes sense, since that's more Jewel's own sound than the whole electrified remix thing. Once upon a time... oh, wait; people here don't have an hour to read a rambly Email; better cut to the point. Back in December 1994, I was on a mailing list (now defunct) devoted to the music of a young lady who is sadly better known for her acting and modeling career than her unique musical talent -- Milla Jovovich. Several of the denizens of that list were privy to a lot of new muslc, and a couple lived in San Diego. In January, a buzz started oner this SD-based performer who was about to have her first CD released. It developed into a thread, with people contributing their stories about seeing her perform in this little hole-in-the-wall called the Innerchange, and a tiny place in Toronto called C'est What. One thing led to another, and a Jewel mailing list came into being. As soon as I found out about it, I joined. There was only the skeleton of an angelfood trading group at that time, so I didn't really have an easy opportunity to hear a sample of her music. When the CD popped up at a local indie store (also defunct), I bought it without hesitation and listened to it on the way home. That's all it took. I didn't see her live until a few months later (during the infamous Peter Murphy support tour), but by then I had all the angelfood I needed to know that we had a star on our hands. Once again the Campbell Inn will be open for business to accommodate those interested in attending the East Coast EDAF kickoff event!!! For those of you who don't know, the EDAF (EveryDay Angels Foundation) is a nonprofit organization set up to primarily promote volunteerism in the communities. It is a separate entity from the Jewel list, but was inspired by Jewel and the list. For more info on the EDAF, visit the page at http://web.edaf.org/edaff/ or e-mail me at Tlcathome@aol.com with EDAF in the subject.. We will be volunteering at the FoodBank of New Jersey's warehouse on Saturday May 30th from 10am to 2pm. We are opening our home to wayward EDA's who plan to attend the event. However, space is limited and we expect a big turnout! Plan to bring pillows and sleeping bags and/or blankets. You must attend the FoodBank activity in order to take part in the rest of the weekend's events! If you can't attend the event, please volunteer at a food bank or soup kitchen in your own area - and e-mail me and let me know you're doing it!!!!. If you need help locating a food bank in your area, check out this site's food bank locator: http://www.secondharvest.org/websecha/f_getouc.htm - if you don't have web access, just let me know and I'll see if I can find one for you!!!! We will also be doing a mini food drive, so please plan to bring at least a little something to donate. They are in need of high protein canned foods in particular, such as canned meats, etc... I will keep everyone posted as to their donation needs as I contact them again. We will also be delivering the food obtained from the food drive my brownie troop will be doing in their school. Sometime after that on Saturday, the plan is to go to FunTime America and be juvenile and play video games, lazertag, ride bumper cars - whatever everyone wants to do there :-) There MAY even be a show by an EDA in the living room at some point during the weekend. Then back to the Campbell Inn for the night. So far nothing is planned for Sunday (unless we do the LR show then), but that could always change..... If you are interested or have questions, please respond to Tlcathome@aol.com with EDAF weekend in the subject. You can get more information about the food bank at http://www.njfoodbank.org/ Tammy :-) ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #283 ***************************
