Hey all, I haven't posted in a while but picking up ANWA today has forced me from my long-standing position as a habitual lurker. Anyway, I picked up a copy of both the cassette and book this afternoon and popped in the tape while driving around doing some errands. I was getting into her voice, enjoying the poems I knew, as well as enjoying those new to me. (BTW, I prefer the longer version of As a Child I Walked too, but writer's make their editing choices for a variety of reasons, so.......) Anyway, I began to notice one of several themes that permeates her work: sensuality, often bordering on eroticism. Now, I'm aware that I'm not the first one to notice this, but while I was driving I became, let's say, "swept away" by some of the more florid, floral metaphors of love-making. Well, needless to say, the endorphin rush that followed temporarily obscured my ability to operate heavy machinery, namely, my car. I nearly veered off the road, almost mauling some landscaping and a particularly ugly lawn ornament. Consequently, a word of caution to those who plan to listen to this poetry while driving: Jewel's voice and imagery may temporarily cause a lovely, but dangerous form of road blindness.
