I think several of you that are getting upset over the instructions are excluding yourself needlessly. You can still publish your own entry elsewhere, any time you like. But of course, anyone is welcome to not participate, if youre uncomfortable with the rules. MrBB ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 May 1998 15:38:25 -0400 From: Horter!!!! I just have to say that I cannot understand all this anger over the contest. Relax everyone. Look at this thing from another point of view. Your beauty, your art, your children will be PUBLISHED! It will be seen. You will become known and get exposure. And, not by some Joe Scmoe from the alley, by a huge publishing firm and by Jewel. If you don't want people to read your poetry, that can be understood but then keep it in your private journals at home. This is the perfect opportunity for some of you and you are just arguing. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. With any talent contest you give up some rights and take a huge risk. If you aren't ready to take a risk, you're not ready to be recognized. What kind of a contest would announce, "Jane Doe won with her beautiful poem but no one can read it because she wrote it." Poetry is supposed to be personal, but it's through a person's words that they touch another person. So, if you don't want to touch someone's life, then keep your poetry to yourself, but don't argue with the contest. It's probably the chance that many of you have been looking for. That makes sense... but y'know, I could trust a person like that, but not a corporation. Certainly not a record label... I mean, most likely that's all that will come of it, but (wild hypothesis) say I submitted the winning poem (first let's say I live in the States, so this is a total cosmic fantasy^_^), and then a few years later I used the same poem as the lyrics to a song that my band performs. The song is a runaway success and makes me an instant millionaire. You'll notice there are differences, for example, between the lyrics to Who Will Save Your Soul as performed on POY and as listed in the POY liner notes... also, every time I see her perform a familiar song on TV, she makes it unfamiliar somehow... singing harmonies instead of the melody on the CD, stuff like that... it used to bug me, but um I'm coping. ^_^ /-\-/-\-/-\-/-\-/-\-/-\-/-\-/-\-/-\-/-\-/-\-/-\-/-\-/-\-/-\-/-\-/-\-/-\-/-\- /-\ Jesse Dangerously http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~ad309 ad309@chebucto.ns.ca Ekam Sat, Viprah Bahudha Vadanti ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 May 1998 16:50:03 -0300 (ADT) From: Jesse A McDonald Subject: a night without armor I picked up this book as a birthday gift for my gf (whose day happens to be the day after Jewel's day... how bout that?) and of course I couldn't resist reading it... devoured the whole thing in an hour. I loved the ragged pages (ragged, that is, save for pages 33-36, which were smooth and neat...?!), and the pictures were of course lovely. The paintings should have been in color, but their inclusion was welcome... My problem is this: I love poetry, but poetry does not love me. I don't get it, I never get it. I mean, sometimes a poem will speak to me (And that's always awesome, which is how I know I like poetry) but most of the time it just skips right over my head... whoosh... it's really kind of disheartening. I can write it (sort of), but I can't read it. Bah. I'm not saying I didn't like ANWA... I just felt like I was missing something most of the time. Maybe it'll help if I get the recording... Anyone know if that is Jewel playing the guitar in between her poems on the CD of A Night Without Armor? I would think it is, but does anyone know for sure? Also, I have an extra copy of A Night Without Armor poetry book (unsigned). If you can't get to a store to pick one up, e-mail me and we'll make arrangements for me to send you my extra copy. If I don't get back to you in e-mail, it's because it's gone. Put "POETRY BOOK" in the subject please. Lastly, I always have trouble recording Jewel performances on the tube! I already goofed and missed The View because I forgot to turn the timer on! Augh! Anyhow, if you are taping all the appearances this week and next, get in touch with me so we can do a trade for it. I have lots of Jewel on video, concerts and all tv appearances including a new Jewel concert that only 2 people in the whole world have that I know of, me and the person that filmed it at a mall! I will not be making copies of this for anyone unless we are doing a trade. Last time I made dubs for peeps without trading, I spent months and months dubbing, breaking 2 VCRs and can not afford to do dubs like that again. So that's why they make tress, huh? Hi all, I'll be without email until after Memorial Day, so here's a lot of info before I leave again. Please do not reply to this message as I will be unable to reply to you. First, here's the "official announcement" from HarperCollins about the Poetry Contest, followed by details on the LIVE CHATS WITH JEWEL that I previously mentioned & other miscellaneous info. MrBB ******************************** >From HarperCollins: We're marking the publication of Jewel's first book of poetry, A NIGHT WITHOUT ARMOR, with some special online event! ONLINE POETRY CONTEST: MAY 19 to JUNE 16, 1998 Sharpen your pencils and keep your notebooks handy because we're holding a poetry contest with a Grand Prize of $500. Not only that, Jewel will match the prize with a $500 donation to the winner's favorite charity. Ten runners-up will receive a CD version of A NIGHT WITHOUT ARMOR and an autographed copy of the book. The contest is hosted by the TV Guide Entertainment Network, so visit their web site (http://www.tvgen.com/jewel/) to enter. Preliminary judging will be by Poet Bob Holman, Dean of the Spoken Word Scene, co-owner of Mouth Almighty/Mercury Records, joined by his panel of Po Masters. Jewel will pick the final winners herself. Good luck! ********************************************* Now onto more info on various things: LIVE CHATS Jewel will chat live online twice in early June. On June 3 at 8:00 pm EST, she will appear on the VH-1 area of America Online, an event co-sponsored by BarnesandNoble.com. Then on June 8, she'll hold a chat in the TVGEN/Yahoo! Auditorium at 10:00 pm EST. Log on and you'll have a chance to chat with Jewel. TV INFO: Remember, Thursday (tommorrow) night at 9:00pm EST, ABC Network broadcasts the Rolling Stone Mag special featuring Jewel performing live at Java Joe's earlier this year. Jewel will also be on CNN Showbiz Today on one of the next few days. MTV should start showing 1 minute spots of Jewel reading Poetry at Midnight. This may begin next Monday night but could be starting any night now. Set VCRs to be sure not to miss it, if you are interested. On 6/28/98, Jewel is scheduled to do another Letterman Show. This is tentative & may change. The following night, 6/29/98, Jewel will be the first featured guest on the premiere of a new MTV interview program called "Fanatic". Miscellaneous: Periodically check Atlantic Records Website for info on a webcast of the entire Poetry Reading from Times Square last night. They do plan to webcast this at a later date (soon). To those writing me about The EDA Birthday Card: I have it & YES, I'll personally make sure Jewel gets the card in time for her birthday. :-) For the many asking me.....I do not know if you got your "Jewel message" to Jennie, the b-day card co-ordinator, in time. If you are worried about this, I suggest you send your message via Jewel's website email link or via regular mail to the PO Box listed in the POY CD. Bibi will forward all that stuff to Jewel at a later date. And finally, a last reminder that Cal EDAs interested in checking out Jewel & Lenedra's friend Andres Condon, can see him at an intimate coffeehouse gig at Bistro 101 in Leucadia, California THIS FRIDAY, May 22. The venue has great food & is open to all ages. The address is 1650 N. HWY 101 in Leucadia. You can phone Bistro 101 at 760-753-6440. Area EDAs may enjoy checkin this gig out. This has been on my mind for a while and I was at the reading in NY last night when Jewel "told off" those punks, as she put it. Anyways, who are thse people? I mean, at any Jewel function, there are always dumb people who scream stuff out at inappropriate times. Listen to any piece of angelfood and its there. Why would people come to these things if they are going to be disruptive and inappropriate??? It just bothers me that people are rude enough to go out of their way to be a pain in the butt.
