The problem is that I don't live in Los Angeles! I had to skip class and wake up at 6AM just so that I could get to the Virgin Megastore when it opened at 9 to pick up two copies for me and my roomie. I had to drive for 2 and a half hours in Los Angeles rush hour traffic so I don't think I will be returning anytime soon. I'm sooo sorry..it was a last minute decision or else I would have offerred to pick up some copies :( Oh..and if anyone ever DOES go to the Virgin Megastore in Los Angeles BEWARE OF EVIL EMPLOYEES! I went in there at 9:30 in the morning and they were NOT in a good mood! As I was helping myself to a few Jewel stickers the guy behind the counter informed me that I could only have ONE sticker for every book I bought! What a piece of ****, I know that is NOT true becaue they were just sitting by the register as promos and you can take one even if you didn't buy a book. He was just mad at me for examining all the Jewel books to see which one was not all dinged up. When I pointed out to him that I was buying TWO books and that I had just driven for 2 and a half hours to get there he gave me a weary look and said I could have one more. I was annoyed since I knew the stickers were free for all to take so when he turned around to get a plastic bag I took two more. Then when I TURNED away to look at the new Natalie Merchant CD and turned back he was nicely putting my stickers into a nice pile...I thought it was odd..and low and behold...when I got home and examined my stickers he had drawn a MUSTACHE on Jewel's face on my sticker with a blue pen! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR..... Okies...sorry for the long rambling..take care my angels-- Mary wannabe angel :) ::the future law student that still acts as if she were 5:: ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 May 1998 10:21:00 +0100 From: mclaycm@dcs.gla.ac.uk (colin mclay) Subject: Jewel in Europe? Hi Does any of you guys know if Jewel has done or will tour in the UK, I am in Scotland but if she came to London only it would be OK because I can fly down there fairly cheap from here. I am going to London on July 1st to have a look at some CDs as they are sure to have a better selection there that you can browse through, they may also have some good Jewel posters. Colin - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- By the way, I am also a Mega Celine Dion fan and can any of you guys get any of her albums I don't have. If any of you can, please email me with details of what you can get, I have 10 of her albums currently and would like some more. The event was just handled badly by everyone involved and Jewel herself did her best, but still, it was a disappointing affair. After assembling the 250 dedicated people who had obtained passes and presigned books into a small area on the bottom floor of Virgin Records and making us sit on the floor, you'd figure they just might have the courtesy to treat us to something enjoyable. Well, instead what we got was a narrated question and answer session run by some fake-smile adorned blonde chick who prob'ly spoke more than Jewel did the whole time. This WAS NOT a poetry reading in any traditional sense, it was pure promotion and commerce, not art. A poetry reading is conducted in a darkened, quiet, room like a coffeehouse or something along those lines. Now I knew going in that it was being held at Virgin Megastore and not some place really meant for a true poetry reading. But I figured they'd at least be smart enough to conduct it in an area of the store set apart from the rest. It wasn't. I figured it would be Jewel reading her poems for an hour or so while a silent audience sat in a dark room and listened intently. It wasn't. She read maybe 7 poems and was led through the process by the blonde, make-up and a smile Canadian woman who asked Jewel a bunch of questions, including some from the audience. One highlight was a deep question someone took time to think up asking her about the value of pain as an emotional resource in the writing of poetry/composing of music to which Jewel's answer was equally profound. Also of note, Jewel was obviously nervous, intimidated and just generally weirded out. She didn't seem to understand the purpose of the whole endeavor(other than promotion of the most commercial sort) and neither do I as she sat there in some kind of virtual poetry reading under harsh lights better fit for a hotel room porn set than a poetry reading, not even on stage, just in a cheap director's chair roped off from uncomfortable fans sitting on a hard floor. So, my experience was decidedly negative but her fans generally reacted positively and were treated with a glimpse of Jewel attempting to be intimate under duress. I mean, the poems she did read were nice to hear read aloud, live. It was cool to hear her answer some of the more original questions and talk honestly about the motivation for her poetry, how she carries literature in her trailer on tour while most artists have magazines, how she once met Chares Bukowski's widow and that he is one of her favorite and most admired poetic influence. That stuff was all cool. It's just that the setting was so bad and it was so damn short, maybe 35 minutes tops from when she actually appeared to when she left, that I am left with a negative taste in my mouth. Oh well, shit happens, and after all, it was basically free considering I paid 15 bucks for a signed book and did get to hear and see Jewel from maybe 8 feet away, something that hasn't been possible for a while. There were a few positives, I'll try to keep them in mind. Sorry I didn't talk to any EDAs other than the person I went with, but then again I've never been much of one to do that. Hopefully some of the others who were in attendance can offer their perspectives. Be well, Sean Hooks ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 May 1998 09:27:01 -0500 From: sesykes@juno.com (Scott E Sykes) Subject: Poetry cd Hey guys, I was just wondering about the cd. I don't think it's fair that you have to give up all rights to your poem. just for that reason, I'm not submitting anything to the contest. I thought it was cool, but, it's not a great idea at all. poetry is, and should remain a very personal thing. it shouldn't be exploited, and bought and sold. just felt like opening my mouth. hey, I was at Virgin in NYC yesterday for the poetry reading. I was pleased. I got to sit nice and close, however, this kid Dave G, sitting next to me, was extremely sweaty. I also want to admit that when Jewel read "Goodness (A Poem For Shane)" a tear came to my eye! I'm such a baby! I don't even HAVE a brother! anyway. . .I hope to see everyone next weekend! First things first, after school my best friend in the whole wide world, Ben picked me up with out friends Monique and Ginger and we were on our way to the city and we got to the megastore around 7pm exactly and it took us like forever to get our books and wristbands.. eventually we got down to the first floor and i saw so many people i haven't seen in soooo long... like Abel and Thirza and Jared.. and this other girl who was with us when we met Jewel at the Siena show... it's so funny how people can recognize me with short blond hair ... i guess looks never change :) So anyway we were eagerly anticipating Jewel and when she came out I was pretty happy cuz I mean, there she was again... seeing her live brings forth a renaissance of jewel fandom it seems, and now i have my jewel stuff playing ya know. too bad she didn't sing or anything... I agree with those who said that it wasn't a poetry reading - it was more like a q&a session... the lady from muchmusic was asking her stuff like she knew what she was talking about (and probably didn't) and she kept nodding her head and moving right along. Jewel kept wiggling her foot up and down as it was extended and playing with her rings and stuff. She never really completely sat up in her chair either, she was kinda slanted on the edge... BAD POSTURE :P hehehe When she did read the poetry it was really good.. and you could tell the maening of the book (whoever asked that, it was a good question), did not pertain to the evening's storytelling about the guyat the restaurant saying "Are you sure that was Jewel? Did she have a snaggletooth?" btw it means a night without her sarcasm basically, her armor from the harshness of the world.. her humor and sarcasm and cynicism.. So anyway, at one point a guy yelled something and she just yelled "Shut up, punk" but it was funny cuz it was like in a 5 year old voice.... really cute :) The poems she read were very good and I'm very surprised at how quiet the store was as she read them.. I wsa really happy to see that she only had to tell people to be quiet once :) And I know how it is with poetry... people really shouldn't talk. Well taht's my account.. and if you don't have the book - BUY IT.. it's so good you have no idea! I've been reading it all morning.. And hey to all those IRC EDA's I met (PRSunbrst, HiaKia) great to finally meetcha :) love ya'lls :) - -linda the lovable angel.. :) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 May 1998 08:02:00 -0700 From: BenFrancis@webtv.net (Ben Simpelo) Subject: Rolling Stone State of the Union show (San Diego EDAs please note!) But they will show the Rolling Stone special at 1AM late Sunday night. First, I must say that the cover picture is one of the best I've ever seen of Jewel. I think it's definitely in the top 3. I was wondering about the picture on the back though...I mean, I think it's the same one that was used in a recent Rolling Stone issue, maybe a month or so ago. Can anyone verify this? Only the one in the RS issue was a closer view, mostly just her face, and was larger. I think the book is great, and so far from what I've heard, the audio version is great too. I can't wait for her other book, and the new CD! Oh yeah, does anyone have any idea when she'll be on Charlie Rose's show? I know it was taped Monday, but as of last night, it still wasn't on. I know someone said it never airs more than 3 days after the taping, so does that mean it'll be on tonight? Anyone know for sure? Derrick ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 May 1998 09:36:15 -0700 From: "Wizard" Subject: Poetry contest The contents of the post you are about to read may seem unduly harsh. This is due to my strong feelings on the subject. I considered entering the HarperCollins poetry contest until I found out I would have to surrender the rights to my art to a Corporate giant. My words, both poetry and lyrics, are my children. Poetry defines the boundaries of the written or spoken word. It is a vehicle to express emotions as far as possible within the limited framework of language; I think the only way to surpass the emotions of poetry is the use of music to express the emotions that go beyond words. And HarperCollins would like us to surrender our rights and ownership of these expressions. Lets remember that HarperCollins exists for one purpose: to further their own greed. Do you really think they give a rat's ass about poetry or literature? Do you think they are in business to add beauty to our lives? They don't care about you, they don't care about Jewel (except as far as they can profit off her), they don't care about art. They care about turning a profit, and they will use the winning poem to that end. Unfortunately for the poet, it will no longer be their possession and they will see no money from it. They may, however, one day see their poem in a greeting card or some other mundane format; while HarperCollins is raking in the dough, the poet will just have to get back to their plodding, pedantic job at the gas station or wherever, because they no longer have any legal rights or recourse. This is the exact same scenario that early blues musicians were in. The record companies would buy the rights to a song for next to nothing, then profit while the artist faded into obscurity. HarperCollins would sell runaways into slavery if they could make a profit without being indicted. And whats an even better way to make a profit without being indicted? Exploit the fans of a pop phenomenon! In my opinion, anyone who would sell out their art is a hack. You have no right calling yourself an artist, you are a businessman. It is possible for one to be both, but their is a big difference between making a living off your art, as opposed to treating your creation like a commodity. Can you put a price on you deepest emotions? If so, perhaps they weren't that deep after all. If you are willing to sell your emotions for a mere $500 ($500? Hell, HarperCollins probably spends that much every day on Liquid Paper), perhaps you would be better suited writing jingles for toothpaste commercials instead of passing yourself off as a creative entity. Perhaps "You're Not Fully Clean Until You're Zestfully Clean" is prose more suited for your abilities. As far as plagiarism, this is probably not an issue here. Two similar words in a rhyming scheme does not constitute plagiarism. There are, after all, only so many words in the English language, just as there are only so many chords and progressions in western music. Any obsessive sociopath can send Jewel, or any other artist, their songs or poetry for years; at some point in their delusions they may see a similarity between something they sent to the artist and something the artist has written/recorded, and then get a scheister lawyer (Jackie Chiles?) to represent them in a frivolous lawsuit. With Jewel being as prolific as she is, and undoubtedly there are a few people sending her material, it is very likely that one of the more frustrated (or disturbed) individuals will follow this course of action. It is, however, very difficult to prove in court that someone has stolen your material (although George Harrison may disagree). I don't think that relinquishing ownership in ones poetry is a protective measure for anyone except HarperCollins. I will concede that this concern does carry some validity; it would seem to effectively preclude a plagiarism lawsuit (oh, by the way, the attorneys who drew up the rules for this contest - I'm willing to bet their suits cost more than the $500 grand prize). Save your flames. Unless your correspondence is intelligent discourse, I will merely think about it, laugh about it and forget about it.
