Jewel is briefly mentioned in the May 14 edition of Rolling Stone. She's only mentioned a couple of times, but here's the whole article, since it talks about a lot of other artists, too. It's on pgs 21-22, in case you missed it. Anyone have more info about this show she's supposedly lined up for? I can't tell if this is making her sound bad or not. Send me your opinions privately, if you want. I'm interested in others' views. jewel is also mentioned briefly on page 30 in the stevie nicks interview and on page 59 in the steve poltz "one left shoe" review, in addition to the article below (on page 21-22). not a whole lot to get excited about, though. "Taking Care of Business >From Bob and Jakob Dylan to Joan Osborne and Jewel, top acts are taking big money to play for major corporations. By Fred Goodman If your dream concert ticket is Bob Dylan and the Wallflowers, chances are you'll never get to see that show. Unless you happen to work for a company named Applied Materials. To celebrate its thirtieth anniversary, the Silicon Valley, California, firm recently rented the San Jose Arena, distributed 12,000 tickets to its employees and hired both Bob Dylan and his son's band to perform. Why would the Dylans-who have assiduously played down comparisions and otherwise resisted performing together-make this date? The answer, in a word, is money-and lots of it. Although many rockers don't like to talk about it, the market for playing corporate private parties is lucrative-even by rock-star standards-and booming. 'It's a very, very active business,' says Christopher Dalston, an agent at Creative Artists Agency, which has helped arrange top-dollar gigs for artists including Dylan, the Wallflowers, Jewel, Steve Winwood and Santana. 'Based on the [boom] economy right now, a lot of these companies ar pouring money into corporate events. Offers cross my desk every day, and it would shock you who they want.' According to Jonathan Scharer, whose Overland Entertainment has booked everyone from Bob Dylan to Chaka Khan for corporate gigs here and in Europe, his firm alone will arrange approximately fifty such shows this year. Celebrity entertainment for corporate affairs is nothing new; what is new is the increased demand, astronomical fees and wide range of artists accepting and even seeking these gigs. Although the Beach Boys, Kenny Loggins, Chicago and various Motown acts have long been popular as corporate entertainers, tastes are changing along with employee profiles. Los Lobos, John Hiatt, the Smithereens, Luscious Jackson and Joan Osborne are some of the less-likely artists to join the circuit. 'We receive a lot of inquiries for Third Eye Blind and the Matchbox 20s of the world,' says CAA's Dalston. 'The younger corporations like Nintendo and the Silicon Valley companies are looking younger and younger for their employees. I got a call from somebody today saying, 'We would like someone as radical as a Marilyn Manson.' While some performers don't want to talk about these shows-representatives for the Wallflowers and Osborne, who recently shared a corporate bill, would not comment for this story-the circuit is losing its stigma. One reason may be the Rolling Stones' January concert in Hawaii for Pepsi bottlers, for which the group received only a modicum of bad publicity and a rumored $1 million. Prior to the show, Mick Jagger told Rolling Stone that the band was doing it 'for the money, I suppose.' Jay Coleman, whose entertainment-marketing company helped pair the band with the beverage, termed the performance-held for 3,500 in a tent-'a phenomenal show' and 'the first bar mitzvah the Stones did.' The B-52's are one of the bands that, after initial skepticism, have come to embrace corporate shows, recently playing for Nabisco and at Coca-Cola's Christmas party. Says Steven Jenson of the band's Direct Management, 'I guess these corporations are finished with Kenny Loggins and Huey Lewis and the Doobie Brothers, and want someone a bit more contemporary. And the B-52's are the ultimate party band. Why not? The production is done professionally and to our specifications. The corporations love to have them and treat them like royalty.' Corporations certainly pay fees fit for a king-sometimes more than double a band's normal price-as well as pick up all costs and incidentals, including production, lighting, equipment, travel, food and hotels. Perhaps the most conspicious corporate consumer has been the financial firm Nomura Assets Capital Corp., which recently booked Santana and Crosby, Stills and Nash for one event and has also hired Bob Dylan, Jewel, and the Eagles-the latter for a reported $500,000. 'The companies that started it didn't really think about the future and just started paying,' Scharer says. 'Acts were being paid exorbitant amounts of money. There are acts that still stand on their morals, but the record business is so different now-careers don't have the longevity they used to, and acts are fearful. Plus, it helps to pay costs when they're working. WHy not pick up an extra $75,000 or $100,000-or more?' Even bands that don't command huge fees, like the Smithereens, admit that those changes in the business have affected their thinking about corporate gigs. 'I don't consider it a compromise at all,' says Smithereens guitarist Pat DiNizio. 'It's given us a new lease on life. We did a corporate date last year for a company called Abbott Pharmaceuticals, a private party in a nightclub in Atlanta. It was actually one of the most satisfying gigs I've ever done-not just financially. It gave real definition to me in terms of what the audience that was still there for us was. These were people that obviously were there for a convention but they were stage-diving into the mosh pit. They were suits and ties at work, but they still like to rock. 'I'm just delighted,' DiNizio continues, 'that in the midst of celebrating our eighteenth anniversary as a band-a remarkably long time in an industry where bands come and go in the space of one or two albums-we're still writing new material and making records and performing with gusto. No matter the context, whether we're playing for 10 people or 10,000, it's the same amount of energy, and we've never lost sight of the fact that we're lucky to have a career to begin with. You just do what you have to do.'" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Apr 1998 00:53:29 -0000 From: msinghaus@msmisp.com (Melissa Singhaus) Subject: HI! It was that one of the best things that you could do for her birthday was to be nice, help someone that needs or wants help, remind people that mean alot to you (friends, family, etc.) just how much they mean to you, and basically be especially EveryDay Angelic (because May 23 is officially Everyday Angel Day in Georgia!!! And it should be celebrated in full force, not just in the peach state, but world wide!). and hey, have a kooky day, everyday!!! Jay J. PS: does anyone else think "kooky" is a cool word?
