I can see where you're coming from, but I think you need to be more optimistic about this. After all, you may see an aritist that you've never heard of, but love all the songs they performed and they may become one of your favorites. Besides that, Sarah's giving other musicians a chance to tour and be exposed and after all, and not a flame at all, but those musicians that you mentioned may not be others favorites, although I think they are all great also. I do wish Jewel was performing again, but know she's busy but I'm very happy Sinead O'Connor is touring this year. I'm bummed Lisa Loeb isn't there again, but happy that Bonnie Raitt is there as well as Luscious Jackson. Chantal Kreviazuk I hear is great and I'm looking forward to seeing her. Of course, luckily Lisa Loeb and Chantal are performing here together for their own show. Thanks for listening, J.T. P.S. Love you hear your opinion of my opinion of your opinion:):) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Apr 1998 14:51:35 +0000 From: "Southern Students for Choice" Subject: Re: "Free Bird" Haling from Jacksonville, Florida, home of the nearly-defunct band that wrote "Free Bird", I think I can answer this one. "Free Bird" was a song by Lynyrd Skynyrd that was very popular back in the late 70s and early 80s. It was Skynyrd's most popularly requested song at concerts, where many audience members shouted it out (or slurred it, depending on their state of intoxication), and lit butane lighters, etc during the song. A few people even threw themselves off of balconies - -- really -- during the song. It was covered by many other southern rock and country bands at that time, and so many people shouted out requests to play "Free Bird" that it became a running joke, especially when shouted out at wholly different music genre concerts, where the last song the band would want to play is a cover of "Free Bird". So that may be one reason why Jewel seemed pissed off or maybe a little amused that someone would yell "Free Bird" at a show of hers. Also, the lyrics are about a affair that a Skynyrd band member has with a woman who he can't stay with but for rare occasions because he's on the road so much, and in explaining this to his lover he calls himself a "Free Bird". I don't know if you'd call those lyrics sexist or not, but I can't imagine a woman singing that song. Not Jewel, anyway. The lyrics would completely clash with the imagery in Morning Song. Jewel wouldn't be able to break away from her lover as easily as the guy from Skynyrd does. Jewel would tell the promoter to tell the audience she has a cold rather than have to leave her lover, and I'm sure her audience would understand. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Apr 1998 04:52:43 -0500 From: t a w Subject: NJC: RS: Poltz and Fleetwood Reviews In the new RS 786, they review One Left Shoe and Legacy. Poltz: 3.5 stars, album cover photo. "Steve Poltz's debut, One Left Shoe, confidently proceeds as though singer/songwriters are back. And as the co-writer of Jewel's "You Were Meant For Me" (as well as the co-star of its video), Poltz, formerly of San Diego's Rugburns [sic], ought to know what's up. With the help of veterans like producer J. Steve Soles and arranger Jimmy Haskell, Poltz offers a collection of subtly Hollywood-ish pop. He's got a flexible, no-sweat voice, too, a light tenor that's all scuffed charm and strummy entitlement. With one major exception - "Silver Lining," a sweetly cranky, rhythmically tight stroll through late-twentieth-century indignities, co-written with Jewel - the first half of Poltz's album stalls. Songs like "Forbidden Fruit" and the dapper "Impala" fall prey to the classic singer/songwriter offenses of whimsy and windiness. The second hald makes a dramatic recovery. Poltz excels with the absurd poignancy of the title ballad, the emotional compression of "Leavin' Again" and the fluid honky-tonk of "The Great Mystery." He keeps building from there: "Broken Hearts and Painted Nails" and "Kicking Distance," two passionate, romantic monologues, are like his hell-for-leather answers to Jewel's "Foolish Games." At times like these, Poltz reminds us of Keith Carradine's character in Robert Altman's "Nashville", a dusty mixture of craft and guts. I won't type out the whole Legacy review, but since Jewel's on it, I'll tell you she isn't mentioned in the article and the album as a whole only gets 1.5 stars. - -todd ~the zen angel~ ------------------------------ Date: 20 Apr 98 22:19:33 +0100 From: "Chris Groves" Subject: NJC: Steve Poltz In The UK For those that are interested you can find details of Steve Poltz's UK gigs, including set-lists, on my web pages. First, I need the setlists to Live and Interactive and Boston Orphium (2/97). Second, someone, who will remain nameless, whom I have helped out with problems and inquiries about the list, has been sending me chain letters. I have adressed this on the list before, but I would like to state it again. IMHO, it is kind of rude to send chain letters in the first place to people you don't know and in the second place, to people who have helped you out. In someway, I think chain letters are just bad luck in the first place. So please, do not send chain letters to people whose names you get from the list!!!!! This is for discussing Jewel, not getting names for chain letters. - -Rebecca, The Angel With Butterfly Wings ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Apr 1998 21:53:44 EST From: "Kelly Gallagher" Subject: NJC:attn. Philly/So.Jersey EDAs Hi! Thanks for checking this out. I'm Kelly Gallagher, I've posted a million times to the list by now. I'm in an environmental club at Rowan University here, and this Thursday (4/23) we're having a huge Earth Day Celebration. It should be SUPER! We're going to have all kinds of vendors, games, prizes, free t-shirts, and LIVE music! Of course, I'm mentioning this not only because it's something fun to do for Earth Day (FREE), but, I'm one of the preforming acts. I'll be there all day, running the thing, and then also preforming. If you do choose to donate money or buy raffle tickets, ALL proceeds are going to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, and Keep Our Oceans Clean. A worthy cause? Well, the bands there (6 really great bands, not to mention our acoustic showcases) will have their music on sale for purchase. Come out and support the South Jersey community, and your environment. If you're interested, please respond, and I'll send you directions. if we have enough EDAs coming, let me know if you want to organize a tape bag or something? thanks a million! Love Always!
