I've been on the list, sometimes lurking, some- times in flashing colors, for over two years. In all this time, Jeff Wasilko, the owner has never asked for a penny. He has always offered his resources willingly for list projects and expansions. He has consistently expanded his resources to make more room for us, you and me and thousands of others. =) This kind of pure generousity is seldom exhibited on today's commercial, money hungry internet. Sure, three years ago, when everything was small and personal, but today it is unheard of. =) In the past, some of us have thrown together a few funds to help upgrade some hardware. Now, Mike is asking again for us to think about what we are getting for free, and say, "Hey! I really like what has been happening. And you know what, its worth a few bucks and a stamp to me. Because, hell, I want to help a cause that has given to me continuously!" =) Think about what an example we are setting for the commercial- filled, subscription-laden, user-fee internet world we are a part of. We can say, "Hey, look at us. We are a self-sustaining community. We don't need to charge fees, because we give when we need to. When there's a need, we do the deed. Why? Because we are Everyday Angels, maintaining our innocence!" That ought to confuse and intrigue some people, eh? =) Some of this may not make a lick of sense to those of you that just signed on. That's understandable. Stick around for a few months and give later. There's going to be some amazing things happening on this list in the upcoming months, trust me. There will be Living Room Tours and plenty of gatherings. (What other internet groups do you know that have those two things?) And more than that, lots of fun! Remember, this isn't just a Jewel list, its a community. =) Can't wait to meet many of you this summer and see some old, dear friends! Woohoo!!!! =) Be an Angel Every Day! =) Crunch! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Apr 1998 02:07:31 EDT From: Stevie3103 Subject: Night Without Armour Costs and FG Dance Mix CD Night Without Armour should be coming out this month and the cost is $15.00- i ordered it too. Well lordy, are there any more details. I appologize if that is old news, but it's not in the FAQ. >> Is this true? I know that many people have posted about this in the past, but I don't remember ever reading anything about it, and I'm very curious, so if someone could please let me know... Jamie Thanks in advance ADDED LIST MODERATOR NOTE: Yeah. Jewel met Nikos nearly a year ago at a show she did in Denver. (from what I understand, Jewel even mentioned him during the show and the fact that he was there). Since then, Bibi (Jewel's Creative Director) has told me they've met a couple of times or so since then. - Mike :-) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 23:57:11 -0500 From: Greg Dunn Subject: Re: NJC: Tapes > - Tapes. People mention Maxell XL II, but I've heard mention of > XL IIS. I haven't seen any of those. What's the difference in > terms of quality and price? And does anyone know wher you can buy > a whole bunch of tapes at once (say, 20)? Perhaps something like > price club. Right now I paid C$8.50 for five XL II tapes. Though I think the tape is nearly the same (a type II formulation), a large part of the added value of buying an S tape comes from the improved cassette housing. The XLIIS tape housings are made to better tolerances, and with higher quality materials. They vibrate less and will probably let the tape run more reliably for longer. Also, the tape guides and reels are a little nicer. No matter how good the tape is, if the housing and internal parts won't let it move smoothly and easily, you'll get wow, flutter, all kinds of detrimental additives to the sound. And any copy will have the same problem or worse. :-) If the source is of the highest quality, invest the extra bucks on metal (type IV) tapes. They're quite good on a properly-designed and calibrated deck. The source I use for bulk purchases is Cassette House (http://www.tape.com) which also sells DAT and CDR media for quite good prices. There are surely other places, but these people have never donw me wrong and I use up DATs faster than most people use cassettes :-) > - Dubbing. I know high speed dubbing is a bad thing. :) What > about using noise reduction -- Dolby B or C? And I've noticed > most dual casette decks don't seem to say anything about > Normal/Cro2/Metal. Any hints there? Most pro tape copiers use the highest quality tapes (often the type IV or "metal" tape formulation) without noise reduction; Dolby B is very sensitive to the alignment of the machine on which it's recorded, and C is a little better, but still a bit touchy. If you must make copies with noise reduction, use at least a high-quality Dolby C and enable the noise reduction on both the tapes (assuming the source was recorded with Dolby C, of course). The source deck should be the one on which that tape was made, if at all possible. Many modern decks auto-sense the tape formulation based on keying slots cut in the cassette housing. Look inside the cassette well and inspect the area where the cassette's write-protect tabs would rest. If there are some additional little "fingers" which touch the housing, it's probably auto-sense. If not, then it probably doesn't support alternate tape formulations well, and is likely to be biased as a compromise among all formulations. Well, our school gets this youth magazine called 'Watch' and again, Jewel was mentioned in Natalie Imbruglia's cd review. It's not much, but it is a Jewel mention. :) "But this album as a whole doesn't distinguish Imbruglia from all the other talented ladies in her genre. Without a doubt, she has a raspy, munchkin, Jewel-ish voice..." blah, blah, blah. That's it for the Jewel content. Hope you enjoyed the whole 2 seconds of it. :) See ya, Melissa the angel who learned how to drive. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Apr 1998 14:19:42 -0500 From: Chris Snyder Subject: NJC: EDA CAFE 2 Boston Hi everyone I've sent out a few private announcements, but here's the first real one. EDA Cafe History The idea for the EDA Cafe started with two artists from San Diego California. Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel were on a tour of the Northeast United States. They had played TT The Bear's in Cambridge Massachusetts and were going to play Albany New York when they found out that show was cancelled. Because of this cancellation they were left with an extra few days in the Boston area. They decided they wanted to play a show. They called Larry Greenfield in Los Angeles California and asked if he could find them a place to play. On April 16th at 8pm Larry posted to the Jewel Mailing List The Everyday Angels. He asked if there was anyone in the Boston area who would be willing to give their home for a livingroom concert. Christopher Snyder answered Larry's call for a place to play and by the end of the day it was decided that on April 18th the EDA Cafe would take place. Immediately the call was put out on the Jewel list that this concert would infact happen. Within the span of two days over 20 EDAs made plans to go to Dorchester for the EDA Cafe. The result was an amazing evening featuring two amazing performers and a group of wonderful music loving fans. It is very hard to describe exactly what the concert was like. Even though the artists and fans didn't know each other there was an instant familiarity that provided a perfect enviroment for relaxed, intimate, special moments. This concert manifested many things including a tape-tree on the Jewel mailing list, and a Living Room tour that took Cindy Lee, and Elizabeth from one side of the country to the other, and The concert has also given other artists intrest in having Living Room tours of their own. Because of these past events, a feeling of nostalgia, and a love of music we have decided to host the EDA Cafe 2 on April 24th 1998. 22222222222222222222222 Here is the FAQ type info for this years show What? EDA Cafe 2 Where? 39 Longfellow St. Boston MA Home of the Snyder's When? April 24th 1998 The show will start around 8 with dinner, beverages, and bs if Dennis has anything to do with it, beforehand. I want to know how much MONEY it costs? There is a 10 dollar suggested donation. Who? Attendees: All you lovely people who can make it. Who? Performers: A wonderful local performewr named Kevin So. You can view a page on him at http://www.tiac.net/users/gegertha/Kevin.html and find links to sound samples. Another way to hear Kevin's music is to send me a tape in a padded mailer and I will fill it with some of his best work and send it back to you. I am also working on other performers. Why? Simple...To have a wonderful time with great people and great music. How do you attend? RSVP to this address. It is very important to do this ASAP. You will then get all the other info you need to attend the concert. What if you need a place to stay? We are opening our home to anyone who wants a place. There will be beds, couches, and floor. If you live close or far you are welcome. It would be a good idea for some semi-local EDAs to stay over if they plan to attend Earthday on Saturday since it will necessitate getting to Boston in the early AM Why should I come? If nothing else to hear good music but as you know magic things happen when EDAs get together and if you miss this concert you will be very unhappy after the fact. Last year was nothing short of amazing and this year will be even better. So far the list of attendees includes Bill B Chris Moynihan Ali Frasier ? Dennis Harris Alan and AmyJo Bershaw (Maybe) Lauren Bond (and others) Stephanie The Snyders Albert Wang Jessa ? If your not on this list but are coming e-mail me. I hope that wasn't too long for your eyes. It would be wonderful to get more of you here. I know some of you were considering it over the weekend. If you want more info you can go to http://www.tiac.net/users/gegertha/EDANortheast.html and for information about the biggest Earthday concert in the country which just happens to be the next day go to http://www.tiac.net/users/gegertha/Earthday.html Talk to you soon Chris Snyder PS Just added is a party at Bill B's house on the evening of the 25th. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Apr 1998 16:03:33 EDT From: ABershaw Subject: More Jewel/Flea info Hi, A few people asked me what songs Jewel has performed live with Flea (of Red Hot Chilli Peppers) on bass. There's been two performances. First on David Letterman's Show on September 9, 1996- "You Were Meant For Me" (Note: this is commercially available on "The Late Show" CD) The second was at the Hard Rock Hotel gig in Las Vegas this past New Years Eve. A weak show overall but a definate highlight was Jewel & Flea's duet on "Satellite". Flea is an incredible bass player, usually known for his fingerpopping funk/raw energy but on this he showed his seldom heard melodic side. Really nice.
