My favorite story was the one about POY. I think she only said this story one time (Correct me if I'm wrong), She was in a restaurant or something and she was singing POY but no one was paying attention they were just picking at their food, but when she said, "Ugly Girl" She saw girl turning around and saying, "Who's she calling ugly?" (With an attitude.) Then they continued picking at their food. But when she got to the part "faggot" she heard forks dropping and people saying, "Did you hear what she called you?" And when she got to the Jew part everybody was so upset. I like this story especially how she said it. She makes it sound funny. Now my question, Why does Jewel call her mom Nedra and not mom?? I'm on the Lisa Loeb list and there's this little debate about Jewel's high-and-mighty attitude, sound familiar? Someone claimed that they asked for Jewel's autograph and Jewel told her it would cost her ten bucks. Sorry, but I've never met Jewel or anything, but to me, that already sounds like a crock of s**t. People on the list also think that the story of Jewel living in her van is being over-told and that she only tells it to get pity or something. It's really sad that people are cynical enough to interpret a great tale of inspiration into a money-making trademark. These Loebers are fiesty people and I really don't take that $10.00 autograph claim seriously. Well, I'm done with my ranting, I'm just kind of upset, that's all. I posted about this a couple weeks ago, but... We all know the wonder of what brings us, especially these email list-communities, so close together. A big part of it is the music we share with each other, not only the main interest in the musician around whom the list is built, but the musicians we share with each other. It seems pretty amazing, to me, that within the past few years (MMers and ITWers, I say "past few years" since the Jewel list is a few years old...), we have turned each other on to The Rugburns, Steve Poltz, Gregory Page, Lisa Sanders, Mary Dolan, Elizabeth Hummel, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Joy Eden Harrison, Sarah Slean, Patty Griffin, Tara MacLean, Emm Gryner, Dayna Manning, The Devlins, Jann Arden, Chantal Kreviazuk, Ellis Paul, Jonatha Brooke, and the list continues into what seems like a musically blissful eternity. That's a lot of music to absorb in the short time that things have been "up and running" (thank you so much to the amazing people like Justin, Mike Connel, and Jeff Wasilko who own and manage these lists...), and it seems like, in general, there is so much music and so little time to experience it all. But, about a year ago, something happened which changed all that. Who knew that two musicians stranded in Boston who said "hey let's play for some people since we can't play at our scheduled and now cancelled concert" would start something so amazing. Who knew that these two omen, Cindy Lee Berryhill and Elizabeth Hummel, through the amazing hospitality of The Snyder Family, would stir such an uproar and such an excitement that whole living room tours have been organized and produced all over this country. The funny thing about it all, well, is that it all makes sense. In a time when musicians have such fierce competition, it makes sense to bring the music to the people. It makes sense to share, so openly, your art with a bunch of people who care about music so much that they turn each other on to new artists (seemingly) every single day. These people are the fans the musicians want...the ones who care, the ones who will spread the word, the ones who are loyal, the ones who undertand the ultimate importance of doing what you *love* and who want to listen to a musician not because he or she is on the stage cuz he or she happened to be lucky enough to stuff the venue so much that he/she is allowed to play there, but because this musician is doing what is so important that it makes the person animated...and alive. These are the fans the musicians want. This is the honesty that the fans seek in the musicians, the stuff that gives a particular musician an edge over the rest of the bunch that is trying to "make it big." This is the tradition which is continuing and continuing. This is what I share with you. On May 2, just one week after Chris Snyder's Living Room concert, I am holding one in my own beautiful comfortable living room. The tradition continues. The energy created by the tradition has filled my air, and all I can say...wel...is that I love it! The tradition has a twist, though. This past year, the "pioneers" of the Living Room Concert tradition have been those many beloved San Diego artists. Now, I want to give you all a taste of East Coast music. The future of musical folklore is not only of San Diego, it's of the whole world! I feel very honoured. Two amazing women and incredible musicians, Jody Blackwell of the Boston Scene and Jenny Bruce of the New York scene, will be in my house, performing for all of you. Their voices are amazing, and their music is so touching...it's like you listen to them and some sort of a vocal fairy dust is sprinkled all over your soul. Please, come check it out! I am still trying to see if a couple more musicians can come so I can share with you some of the music I love so much. =) Well, this has been a lot to read, so here is the low-down... What: Living Room Concert Where: My house, 76 Boston Avenue, West Medford, MA When: Saturday, May 2, 1998 Time: TBA, but most likely around 7 PM/8 PM Who Invited: All of you! And plase do no feel shy to bring friends Admission: There is a MINIMUM suggested donation of $10, all proceeds go DIRECTLY to the musicians who split it all equally RSVP: ASAP!!!!! =)) (781) 483-1796 kartalst@hugse1.harvard.edu poetchyck@yahoo.com ***This is a DRY/ALCOHOL FREE event*** PLEASE remember to bring extra money. Remember, if you like what you hear so much, you can always slip in some extra cash into the Admission jar... ...or, even better, you can buy Jody's and Jenny's (and if anyone else comes, whoever else's) CD! Jody's 6 song EP is called Volcano and is absolutely incredible. Jenny's 10 song LP is self-titled and touches one of the most beautiful spots inside me. Come and listen to both, and you will understand why it's so hard to choose a favourite that both have to play at the same concert! AND, sleeping space in my house is *INCREDIBLY* limited, and many spots have already been taken (first dibs went to musicians, YAY, and right after my last posting, floor space has more or less been taken...), so this is the time to buddy up with your Boston friends/acquaintances and snag some floor space with them! I hope that as many of you as can posibly come will come. The music is incredible, and the combination of music and good friends is so incredibly worth it. (so, for the record....it WAS brother Atz at Java Joe's performing with Gregory Page, it was also bro Atz who appeared with Jewel at the Kansas City gig a few nights ago and also he was the dude at the Grammy Awards with her) Just for the record, the whole immediate family is: Lenedra - mother/manager Atz - father (prounounced like DOTS, minus the D) Shane - older brother Atz Jr. - younger brother (prounounced like DOTS Jr., minus the D ;-) Nikos - younger half-brother (whom by the way, Jewel HAS met a bit recently, to answer anyone who wonders about it when hearing the song "Nikos", now known as "Brother") Tons of Jewel info/tidbits, and info about this mailing list is available at my web page for this list (in particular the newer folks) at: http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup Mike -list owner/manager/grand poobah....whatever ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 12:53:56 -0400 (EDT) From: TooL head Subject: Re: ??? $10.00 for an autograph ??? So I personally don't see anything wrong with her attitude. I just think that she is generous. the unknown angel :^) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 13:02:37 -0500 (EST) From: Jennifer Anderson Subject: SJC: Jewel mentioned in school paper In Tuesday's "Purdue Exponent," Jewel was mentioned in a music review of Natalie Imbruglia's "Left of the Middle." So, here goes... Tom Proven, Alibob Fraser and myself got to the venue around 7 or so and bought our tickets. There, we met up with Laura Marion, Kim Zercher and her roommate Lori, and Kelly Gallagher. Since there were some underagers among us, we were told by the Tin Angel staff to wait around for Steve Poltz to put them on the guest list so they could get in. So Tom P. and I went in when the doors opened at 8, while the others waited outside for Steve. Once inside, we met up with Eric Montas, Todd Safra and Erin, John Hickey and Dorie, and Bill Pompilli and Melissa. Unfortunately once Steve arrived, the Tin Angel people changed their minds and wouldn't allow Ali, Kim, Lori, Laura or Kelly into the show. Well, this really pissed off Steve, but more on that later. So, Steve played a great set, just under 100 minutes. He played lots of old stuff from the Rugburns days (my requests for Single Life and Lockjaw, War, Morning Song) and a few songs he wrote when he was a kid (Blarneystone Blues, Uncle Reggie's Pantyhose). So, anyways, after the show we waited outside for Steve to come out and chat a little since half of our group couldn't get into the show, which he promised he would do for us. So eventually, he did come down and chatted with us for a few minutes. And, for those who couldn't get into the show, he took out his guitar and played a second "show" outside on the sidewalk. He made up a song about "Yagermeister, Hot Dogs, and Boobs," which of course he turned into a sing-along. And since it was Ali's birthday, he made up a song for her, mixed in with oh about a half-dozen or so kisses. :-) And while he was singing ABC song, Ali once again became the center of his attention. And afterwards, while he was talking to these 2 guys who had come out from the bar next door, Ali got even MORE hugs and kisses. And of course, before we left, Steve just HAD to mention to her how much she "made his knees tremble." ;-) Anyways, he finished the set with a rockin' Dick's Automotive (yay Eric for requesting it!) with some cool ad libs thrown in. Needless to say, it was an incredible night, filled with many unforgettable moments (many of which thankfully were captured on film and tape). Can't wait 'til the LRT this summer!! Tom :-) ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #218 ***************************
