I think thats cool :) I remember reading about this in the Rolling Stone which featured Jewel last year (I wish I had a copy!) and I do remember that Jewel talked about this, however I *think* that she said "first black boyfriend", not necessarily meaning that he was her first boyfriend ever, but just that he was her first black one. But I do remember her saying that her father cried with joy, or something along those lines. Perhaps someone with a copy of the magazine could find out for sure. For one thing, I don't Madonna needs to ripoff anyone's style. She set a lot of standards in style herself. As for it being similar, I'm sure there's other videos similar to Jewel's besides Madonna's, even though I don't think its similar at all. If you say that, then what about all these other videos of bands singing in parking lots, or on boats, or wherever. Are you saying they are ripping someone else's ideas off? Just wondering. Think about it though:) Have a great day! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Apr 1998 13:04:06 EST From: AMYSUE Subject: NJC: On the subject of flaming . . . Hello everyone. In reading my e-mail, I've come across a lot of cool angel names, some great quotes, and all kinds of insightful thoughts. But there is one thing I have a problem with. Not naming any names, I would like to point out that one EDA signs their posts with "share publicly, flame privately, 'Cause anyone can start a conflict it's harder yet to disregard it' ". It is behavior unbecoming to an Everyday Angel to be cruel, hateful, or disrespectful. I have a problem with this idea of believing that flaming should be tolerated anywhere. I think everyone on this list has read numerous posts about allowing for differences in opinion, etc. I don't think it's fair to endorse or encourage flaming in any way, especially when they're using a Jewel quote to do it. I would be hard pressed to hold my tongue if someone were to post something that said "All Jewel's songs sound the same. She has no talent and I can't stand her." A comment like that, about a topic personal to us--what Jewel's music means, both generally and to us personally, feels like an attack on us. But we need to remember that everyone has a right to an opinion, no matter how much they disagree with our own, and they do deserve respect. And NO ONE has the right to flame someone for having any kind of opinion. If I were to say, and this its true, that I hate the song Adrian, what would happen? Bearing in mind what I just said, would I still get flamed? I'd like to find out. I don't, however, think there is anything wrong with calmly, respectfully and articulately explaning why I shouldn't hate Adrian. Maybe I'm missing something. I'd like to know if I am. Try me. ~Amy, the angel who loves mystery ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Apr 1998 14:49:21 -0500 (EST) From: Albert Sze-Wei Wang Subject: Economics, Jewel's next album > From: Michael Rusche > Subject: new marketing strategy? > We seem to all be in agreement that Atlantic is trying to grub as much > money out of POY as is humanly possible. Something I've noticed about > the entertainment industry (please correct me if I'm wrong) but I think > new work by an actor, musician, writer, or any other artist sparks > renewed interest in that person's older works. Bingo. I've said this before, and I'll say it again, Atlantic has completely missed the window to release a new album and instead of riding the wave, and capitalizing, the popularity wave is faltering and fading. Now the EDAs will always support Jewel no matter what, we all know that, and Jewel in more intimate settings is what we all want to see anyways. But it doesn't take anymore than a freshman Econ 101 student to realize to capitalize on popularity and to maximize profits, you release new material at the crest of a singer's popularity, when you're making public appearances and on the cover of magazines. I'm hearing talk from a lot of people who think that Jewel won't be any more than a one album wonder. I'm pretty sure that there isn't anyone here who's not looking forward to a new Jewel album, I know we'll buy it whenever it comes out. But from a business perspective, not releasing the new album until very late this year or next year is a poor business decision. It's all in the timing, and Atlantic has totally missed the boat. Will Jewel's next album *eventually* do well anyways? Probably. But it's going to keep pushing her album release dates back so that Atlantic can milk yet another album and make the millions they want. In the long run, we get less Jewel, not more because it'll take longer to reach their profit goals. Business is business, and as far as I'm concerned Atlantic has blown it. I guess I'll just keep giving my money to Nettwerk and Mercury Records artists and then the little bit to Atlantic when they've decided to stop being greedy and stupid, in my opinion. > So if Atlantic wants POY > to make more money, they should released an album ASAP and get Jewel > some more exposure. Absolutely. But the ideal window has already passed. Sarah McLachlan could get away with 3 years between FTE and Surfacing because Nettwerk kept re-releasing singles and Sarah has several earlier albums to fall back on. Jewel definitely doesn't have that pool or resource, and singles are virtually impossible to find. I know too many people, friends and acquaintances alike who have lost interest in Jewel to believe this is a fluke. They're not EDAs, but I think that's the point. But all our thoughts and best wishes will always be for Jewel and that's where they'll always be. :) My feelings for Atlantic on the other hand, are mine and mine alone. In attendance were Russel, Bill Bartholomew, Chris Moynihan, Stephanie Kartalopolous, Chris, Karen, and Jack Snyder, the illustrious fabulous Ted Berberian and his sisters Tessa and Tricia and their friend with the very pretty French name that starts with C (Charmeign?) that I can't remember. ^_^;;; Steve was incredibly entertaining. In between his stories about his friendship with Jewel, their embarrassing personal moments, and the songs they worked on together, Steve played a very memorable and wonderful set. He even sang a special song for Ted. Steve has just the right amount of insanity and genius to not only pull of improvised songs on the spot, but also engage the audience in an evening of comedy, music, and participation. His initial set was 55 minutes. His encore was 45 minutes and then he played some more. :) Jack Snyder even became Steve's official Guinessman. Every time Steve needed a sip of Guiness he would improvise a song and sing it to let Jack know when to pick up Steve's glass of Guiness. Those "Jack I need my Guiness" songs spanned the full range of music- between renditions of Stairway to Heaven, Ozzie Ozborne, some others I recognized, some I didn't, and varying ballads, some improvised on the spot. If you want to listen to not only wonderful music, but also be entertained, leave laughing, and are in Boston area, you must join the rest of us at the Kendall next Tuesday April 7th at the Kendall and then the Tuesday after that, the 14th for his promised special epic 3 hour show. For sheer insane manic entertainment value, music and hilarity, you can't beat Steve Poltz. I highly recommend everyone to go see Steve play, especially if you're bummed and need a serious pickmeup. Steve doesn't disappoint. :) Albert Wang Dark Seraph bahamude@user1.channel1.com Jewel Quotes and QTs http://hugse1.harvard.edu/~wangal/jewel.html Tara MacLean Gallery http://hugse1.harvard.edu/~wangal/tara.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Apr 1998 16:28:52 EST From: PixieFuel Subject: Re: NJC: On the subject of flaming . . .
