I went to the show in Newport, KY tuesday night (which is across the river from Cincinnati BTW) and absolutely loved it. I had debated on whether or not to go and I am so glad I did. The small, intimate setting made for a great evening and Steve was at his best. He was having so much fun with the songs and interacting with the crowd as if we were all just hanging out in his living room. If you get a chance to see him, DO IT! You won't regret it. You might even thank yourself for it. :-) Tony Glass The angel with the wandering mind _________________________________________ If you're walking down the road and you come upon an intersection, be careful which way you turn because it might be a one way street. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Mar 1998 04:46:20 PST From: "Maggan ." Subject: Re: this is the JEWEL fan club OK, it's me again! I'm sorry for taking up space here (there's that giant ego of mine! LOL!) but I wanted to say that, as much as I like Steve Poltz, when I "subscribed" I was hoping for some info on our lady Jewel. I realize that SP is (was?) a major influence of our lady's work. I respect him in his own right. I feel that even if we hate the music, the style, the artist, or whatever, we should respect them. I truly think that we should never "badmouth" a person like the magazine did; I can't remember which magazine (if you haven't noticed, I'm kinda forgetful!) it went something like "She doesn't bring anything (original or different?) to the song" That was rude. As a true critic, he/she should have put "Jewel brought her classic unmistakeable style to this song" Those are pretty much my thoughts on Jewel and SP. I'd just like to say, anyone can e-mail me (or the list, if you don't mind having your thoughts go "public") about anything Jewel-related (or Steve Poltz-related...but please, lets focus on Jewel) at sunshine84@webtv.net Thank you for listening to my semi-mindless ramblings...EDA's forever! {\o/} /_\ Maggie, the acting/theatrical/rambling angel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Mar 1998 10:55:06 EST From: TJ talken Subject: Today's Paper report about Jewel film #note# there will not be articles everyday for the next three months so bear with me on these that i do send, i *know* there long and boring if you only want to know about the music..but this *is* a jewel related topic. *March 26, 1998* POP CULTURE BENDS AN EAR TO THE ECHOES OF YESTERYEAR (this is a long article so i'm editing for content, also note it made front page) All of a sudden, "Bleeding Kansas" is a hot property. Nearly 140 years after marauding Jayhawker and pro-South Bushwackers turned the Missouri-Kansas border into a wasteland of burned-out farms and lonely graves, pop culture appears to have discovered this fascinating- and deeply disturbing- era of American history..."To Live On" about Missouri farm boys who participate as Confederate guerrillas in William Quantrill's 1863 sack of Lawrence- went before the camera Wednesday with filming in northeast Kansas. The director Lee said the border war was "America's Bosnia" (a bunch of historical information)... *next article* mid-way through the paper THE FILMING BEGINS- BUT FIRST, A LITTLE RITUAL FOR LUCK They stood quietly near the highway, a group of 150 men and women. A cloud of scented smoke rose from the incense sticks each held. Their leader, hands together in a prayerful pose, turned crisply, bowing first to the sourth, then to the east, north and west. The others did likeweise until they again faced the south, toward a table covered with offerings of food. Director Ang Lee kicked off the first day of filming for his Civil War drama with a traditional Chinese "big luck" ceremony on a roadside. Everyone on the set- was asked to join in the brief rite designed to bring good fortune...Wednesday's schedule called for the movie makers to withdraw to a heavily wooded area on a near by ranch. The film's young stars--including Skeet Ulrich, Jewel, Tobey Maguire and Jeffrey Wright--were on hand Wednesday. The men already were in costume--thick, dirty homespun clothes, knee-high boots, sumdged faces and unkempt hair and beards. Daniel Woodrell the author with whom the novel is based "It's my first visit to a movie set and it's a little surreal. I mean, there's a troop of Civil War soldiers sitting overe there smoking Marlboros." transcribed by Duff (foreign correspondant) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Mar 1998 11:23:36 +0000 From: "Southern Students for Choice" Subject: Re: Jewel on Lilith Fair CD, Lilith Fair '98 info I don't know of course the exact reasons why no full-length songs of Jewel's are included on the CD, when Jewel was #2 before Sarah McLachlan last year in the performer's lineup and probably outdrew her at some shows. **I don't believe it was because Sarah was jealous of Jewel.** Sarah's sales and media reception have been great, and any friction last year on the was likely more a joke than anything serious. Here's some reasons that make sense to me, which if put together may explain it. Jewel's audience -- as large as it is -- is a little outside the niche that most of the artists last year were in. You may not like to think of artists marketing themselves in a niche, but up to the point that they risk pigeonholing themselves that's one way to try to increase sales. Compilation albums from different artists at a concert are more likely to have artists with a very similar sound, image, market demographic, etc. Think of venues in your town that are likely to focus on marketing bands with a particular "image" -- folk, ska, alternative, etc. Think of times when several tours are announced by similar-sounding bands that play the same or similar-sized venues in the same city, with only a few days or weeks separating their shows. That's competition, and it helps promote sales. I think of Jewel as appealing to a slightly younger audience than Sarah McLachlan, Indigo Girls, Lisa Loeb, and Tracy Chapman (not to mention Emmylou Harris and Mary Chapin Carpenter, who were confirmed last year before Jewel was). And as big of a draw as Jewel was and is, and as many POY CDs as she has sold, the other artists put together had a bigger influence on the Lilith demographic than Jewel did. I do not know what other artists won't have songs on the CD, but it probably includes some notable artists too, particularly newer artists and artists appealing to a younger audience. I'm willing to bet it won't include Juliana Hatfield, who probably appeals a younger audience like Jewel, and her performance last year was critically acclaimed. Whatever difference critics make anyway. Also, there may have been a little less focus from Jewel's management on promoting a song to be included on the CD, with the increasing interest Jewel showed around that time in doing a movie. On Lilith Fair '98 -- we heard from Nettwerk that the Lilith Fair is confirmed for 46 cities, up from 34 cities last year. Some cities not in that confirmed count will likely come through, so that number will likely increase. No idea on when the tour dates will be announced officially. But we can assume that it will come to many of the smaller markets, which will be nice for folks who had to travel some distance to the shows last year. When we get more info we'll post it. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Mar 1998 14:23:56 -0500 (EST) From: Jennifer Anderson Subject: SJC: unknown lyrics hey all. i found these lyrics written down when i was cleaning out my desk. i'm assuming it's a jewel song...anyone happen to know which one? thanks!! - -jennie You were my Romeo I was your Juliet Hiding in the trash can We both got wet ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Mar 1998 15:14:45 EST From: ABershaw Subject: Re: Rolling Stone Documentary In a message dated 3/26/98 12:22:25 AM, johnsoja@martin.luther.edu wrote: <> This is scheduled to air sometime in May. No other performances are scheduled for SD/LA so make sure you attend this performance. Cindy Lee Berryhill will be in attendance to perform one or two songs. Lisa Sanders played LIttle Frida's Coffee House in West Los Angeles last night. She just gets better and better everytime I see her. She'll soon be on her way to Florida to open for Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers. Then heads up to Chicago to begin her opening stints for Steve (and a special show). Then flies to Berkeley to open 3 sold-out dates for Ferron. Then opens for Shawn Colvin in San Juan Capistrano. Finally, re-joins Steve for the last few dates of his promo tour. This hard touring will pay huge dividends as we all know from other artists... A wonderful surprise also happened last night when Joy did a 40-min set before Lisa. I haven't seen her in months and she hasn't missed a beat... She's got some really good new material so we're all in for a treat on Saturday. (March 25, 1998 5:02 p.m. EST http://www.nando.net) -- Jewel hopes starring in Ang Lee's Civil War movie will help with her singing doldrums. The pop star told reporters Tuesday she's turning to acting because she's bored with touring and isn't afraid of the boy's club atmosphere on the movie set. "That's the fun part," she laughed. "To Live On," based on a Daniel Woodrell book, is about Missouri farm boys who become Confederate raiders. It follows Lee's "Sense and Sensibility" and "The Ice Storm." The Taiwan-born director said the story made him look at America differently. "It was more like Bosnia or Vietnam, yet it was dead center U.S.A." Jeffrey Wright of "Basquiat" co-stars. Cast and crew will be shooting into July in Kansas and Missouri. The movie likely will be released next year. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Mar 1998 17:24:31 -0500 From: "The Agnostic Angel" Subject: POY Thank You's I was looking through the thank yous the other day, and I saw how a bunch of questions to the list are answered. Examples: Does Jewel Surf? In the thank you, fifth line from the bottom, it says, “Denny Aaberg - for teaching me how to surf, can't wait for Big Wednesday 2” From this, I think that she probably does surf. This is a Jewel list... Some of my favorite songs on POY were co-written by Steve Poltz, including "Adrian" and "You Were Meant For Me" Where were some songs such as Little Sister recorded? There is an audience in the background at the end. Above the picture of her with the atlantic symbol right below it, at the top, it says: Produced by... and then "Live Recording: Innerchange Coffeehouse, San Diego, CA" (Which I'll soon have a copy of the tape : ) Now, I have some questions that were brought up by the thank yous. It says that WWSYS, YWMFM and Angel Standing By were mixed by Gene Eichelberger at The Sound Shop. Did (s)he take out the part about "Another burger, another hot dog, some fries a wish in the well, hope your health don't go to hell, well" from WWSYS? Another thing, at about 3:40 or so into YWMFM, I think I hear a piano key accidentally hit. Was this an accident? I assume that the YWMFM on POY is the same as the YWMFM German import, because I can hear it on both. anyone else notice this? In the picture on the front where she is like in an angel wing, how old is she? She looks almost like a younger kid, like maybe 9-11 in the picture. And then on the picture of her jumping on a trampoline straight up, similar to the one on the CD, except the hair isn't in her face, I think that she looks like Elka (I think that's her name) from the Real World. No? : ) Take care, and don't put all your faith in one thing. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #188 ***************************
