Hey EDA's... While reading through the Jewel list, I found this article that caught my eye, especially this part I agree totally. Jewel's songs are so heartwrenching because she sings about real things. She sings about how the world is falling apart underneath our feet. It scares some people I guess, because some people I know don't like her either. But the reason I like her is because she doesn't lie, she doesn't make everything rosy, only the things she sees that way. But after everything, even the bad, she makes it beautiful. I agree with the person who wrote its okay to talk about Steve Poltz on this. As the number one influence on her career and co writer of more songs with her then anyone, how can he not be discussed? Especially when Jewel is basically not making much news as she works on her movie right now, and Steve is touring and promoting his new record. Good Deal: I dont know if all Tower records have this, but I got mine at Marina Del Rey, CA. Poltz's CD was 10.99 but I also bought a 5 pack of maxell xl ii 90 minute tapes for 7.99, but on it was a sticker for 3 bucks of any CD with purchase, so I got the Poltz disc for 7.99 also, or 16 bucks for a CD and five tapes waiting to be made into angelfood- not bad. Question: Two of my favorite tunes, Satans Choir and Slip slidin away werent on the disc (i was disappointed) - are these Rugburns songs or on any other CDS? Anyone know? (Am I complaining to much? I'm semi-hyper) Anyway, in the Scope, there are several famous actors and singers, and tells a little about what they did, some being a direct quote, along with a picture. Anyway, there was a pic of Jewel, it looked like a REALLY light colored lavendar-blue (bad lighting right now) vest, and she's looking over her left shoulder, her hair doesn't look too great, but no one can have everything everyone else likes it. : ) anyway, for her thing about before she was famous, it was an exact quote from Jewel for those who may want to add it. Here it is: “I did some ditch digging, cow milking, and waitressing, and secreterial stuff. I was terrible at all of them. The worst was when I had a job bucking (loading) hay bales. ” Anyway, there it is.. I can probably pick up a few copies of it (like I said waste of paper, people just leave them lying around on desks) for someone with a scanner, I could snail mail them the pic/page. Anyway, email me if you have a good scanner, are willing to receive a pic of Jewel via snail mail, no postage on your part. Now as I scroll back along this message, I wonder if I'd ever write something that long for anyone but y'all. The Agnostic Angel. I'm starting to like that...kind of Ironic, but we won't go there (L) : ) Take care, and stuff. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Mar 1998 23:42:58 EST From: Hrgigerfan Subject: NJC: One Left Shoe This Sucks! This isn't meant to offend anyone, just to justify. The presence of Steve Poltz news on this list is very relevant to a Jewel list. First off, he has co-written several songs with Jewel, not the least of which was possibly her biggest hit, YWMFM. Second, listen to his new cd. Jewel sings backup on three songs, two of which, Impala and I Thought I Saw You Last Night, have her voice very distinctly. Considering that recently some of the posts have been regarding whether or not Jewel has been dating Jean-Claude Van Damme, I think that a little excitement over the artist that helped Jewel out a lot in her early days is well-placed. Finally, just listen to his cd. You can hear very clearly in nearly every song how both Steve and Jewel have influenced each others work. Just had to get this off my chest. Steve Poltz is definetly Jewel related news. Ben - The Angel that keeps going and going and... "Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the night." She's wearing a purple long-sleeved shirt and kind of looking down on it. It's easy to find because it's the very first page. There's also a caption that says: "In studio and in concert, Jewel plays D'addario EJ16 phosphor bronze acoustic guitar strings." And of course, I bought it. NOT just for Jewel, mind you, I do play guitar also. But hey, Lindsey Buckingham is featured in this particular issue also. Fleetwood Mac is cool :) Love, Nancy, the angel who breaks everything sometimes. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Mar 1998 01:18:39 EST From: PixieFuel Subject: Re: God's Gift to Women meaning In a message dated 98-03-21 01:15:15 EST, Brandis850@aol.com writes: << What is the meaning behind this song? I'm sorry for taking up space here (there's that giant ego of mine! LOL!) but I wanted to say that, as much as I like Steve Poltz, when I "subscribed" I was hoping for some info on our lady Jewel. I realize that SP is (was?) a major influence of our lady's work. I respect him in his own right. I feel that even if we hate the music, the style, the artist, or whatever, we should respect them. I truly think that we should never "badmouth" a person like the magazine did; I can't remember which magazine (if you haven't noticed, I'm kinda forgetful!) it went something like "She doesn't bring anything (original or different?) to the song" That was rude. As a true critic, he/she should have put "Jewel brought her classic unmistakeable style to this song" Those are pretty much my thoughts on Jewel and SP. I think that your interpretation is completely incorrect. It is a sarcastic, contemptuous song filled with nothing but ridicule for the type of guys who think they can charm a woman by being crude and adolescent. "I'll do you and your mom" and "I'll do you on the front lawn" and other cruder references are clues to how ridiculous the whole idea of being attracted to these guys is to her. I this way it is similar to Racecar Driver. You know the type, those guys who have a really huge ego and think they're god's gift to women. Jewel wrote this song after because of some guy she met on her hitchhiking journeys. He picked her up and things were OK for a while until he started to babble on about how all guys are scum and then he just ogled her breasts and made a luridly obscene comment to her about how big they were. Now I'm not questioning his taste but obviously his pawing, drooling attempt at a compliment came off as sexual harassment. Jewel was then inspired to write "(My Own Private) God's Gift to Women" as a song about the kind of guy who thinks he can get a girl in the sack just by being smooth and studly. The first stanza is her affirming what she's got. Then as the song progresses on its a collage on imagery about how she's sick of guys driving by and sticking their tongue out at her for instance as if she's gonna fall for them immediately and want to "do them on the front lawn," as if. And at the end, such guys actually think the song is about them and that she's complimenting them instead of skewering them sarcastically, which is what she is really doing. It's very much like "Pieces of You" in that way in that only the most naive person could misinterpret it by taking it literally. Also, guys who think they're god's gift to women are very similar to RaceCar Drivers. All full of themselves with their cheesy lines and come-ons but Jewel just kind of chuckles at them and makes fun of those types of guys in such songs. After all, he IS the one who signed Jewel, he IS her very good friend. He helped her write songs and they sing together. They kind of come in like a "pack" (boy did that ever sound superficial). Most of us love Steve for the great things he has done for Jewel and just for his own amazing musical talents. Don't you think he deserves it? Before people comdemn Steve they should at least know who he is and what he is about. We should give him a lot of respect, we owe that much to him. I've been a Jewel fan since December of '95 so I got to witness most of her rise to fame but it's not quite the same as when you've followed someone like Steve before anyone has even heard of him. We're just very excited for him and want other people to experience what he has to offer. We've done this with many artists. This has evolved into more than just a 'Jewel list'. I don't see how someone can complain about not wanting to hear about him and then ask what angelfood is or wether or not they are an EDA by being on the list. If you haven't been on the list long enough to know then you really shouldn't be telling those of us that have what we should and should not talk about. Besides, if there were no Steve there quite possibly could be no Jewel. I doubt you knew that either. Listen and learn and think before you post. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #177 ***************************
