But when I read the poll above, something stroke me. What is the type of music that Jewel plays? Usually, when there's something I like I don't try to change it, or ask to many questions about it. I just like to admire what is great because it's great. I guess that's why I never put the question, not even to myself. If there's anyone that can answer my philosophical question (???) please help me. Hi there, my name is Dominic and I just joined the list. I thought I would send a message to introduce myself. Well, I"m a 23-year-old guy from Montreal, Quebec and I have been into Jewel's music for about 2 years now. I also saw her playing at the Lilith Fair this past summer ; to me, Jewel gave the best performance of all ! She is a sweet and funny person, very articulated and generous. She was also scheduled to do a concert on her own in Montreal last year, but she had to cancel for reasons of illness. Anyway, my other musical interests are Weezer, Juliana Hatfield, Nada Surf, Letters To Cleo, Lemonheads, Fig Dish, Better Than Ezra and Cake. Anybody else from Montreal on the list ? Take care ! This is just a quick post before I head to college and to work... Obviously since I am a new Jewel fan, I missed out on her last tour. But this leaves me with a question: On the last tour, or any other mini-gigs she may have played, did she play NYC? And if so, what venue? Thanks a lot. Good? Course you are! Anyway...... For all the people in Europe Jewel will be on VH1 on the 7th of March. It is a Farm Aid Concert (I think) with other people such as John Melancamp. I can't remember the exact details but I'll find out and post them along with the frequency. Also for the people in the UK, Channel 4 is repeating the entire series of Light Lunch and Jewel was on one day. I'm gonna try and find out when that show will be on. I know this aint that helpful but I'll get the exact info and brighten up you lives by givin you somethin to look forwards to. Kev ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Feb 1998 11:20:52 -0500 From: kinaba@completebbs.com Subject: The Grammies/The New Album First off, I'd like to say that the Grammy show was well done, and I found it to be quite entertaining. I feel that what Ole' Dirty Bastard did was, in some ways, justifiable, but I don't think I could convince Shawn Colvin of that. She seemed pretty surprised with ODB's "speech." Sarah McLachlan was great, Bob Dylan was better, and "Soy Bomb" didn't phase him one bit. Hanson actually surprised me with how calm they appeared. I could still tell that they were nervous, but the performance was well done. I'm not becoming a Hanson supporter, or anything like that, but one has to remember that they are very young. Jewel's "Austin Powers" comment cracked me up! I used to be upset that Fritz Creek Store was being delayed so long, but now I'm comfortable with it. Atlantic may be releasing the album so it will get recognized by the Grammies, or other award shows. This would promote Jewel as a Musician, rather than a Pop Star, which I think is a great move (if that's what they're planning). Also, because the FCS album will be released so late, I may fall in love with it all over again, and that would be a great feeling for me. Any ways, the whole situation is quite complicated, and there is a lot of up and down sides to all opinions on the matter. I think we, in general, do not know enough information about Atlantic's motives and such, to criticized them to death. Thanks. The frusterated Angel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Feb 1998 17:36:57 -0500 (EST) From: Sean Hooks Subject: Next album and Alannis Waiting a long time between albums may decrease Jewel's popularity. I agree. But that's not bad. That's good. Look at Counting Crows. They were overpopular after their firts album so they took a good number of years before their second one. So it didn't oversaturate the marketplace and the pop mainstream didn't embrace it like they did with the first Counting Crows album. As a result, I got to see Counting Crows at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC this November, it's like a couple thousand capacity venue, general admission, the venue they usually use for MTV's Live from the 10 Spot. If they had released the second album right away they would have either been playing big arenas like the Meadowlands or Madison Square Garden or they would have turned into a Hootie and the Blowfish, a group that totally oversaturated the market. Jewel has other things to do for a while, her movie, her books, take your time with the album, there's no rush, she's not going to be able to tour behind it right away I don't think anyways 'cause of her other commitments. So maybe, just maybe, her album can then be greeted with critical applause yet without super-popularity. And I do think it will be musically much better than Pieces of You, which doesn't contain many of Jewel's better old songs anyway. If there were a high quality recording of Rare Angels or Innerchange Days, I'd take either one in a second over Pieces of You. PoY is a decent album, but far from accurate in discerning to the public Jewel's many talents as a songwriter and a performer. So she's taking her time releasing a second album-good. It'll probably be a better, more thought out, more mature album that way. I mean, Springsteen routinely takes 3-4 years between albums. And yeah, the criticism can be that Jewel's album is already pretty much done and in the can and is only being hekd back to milk PoY for every drop of cash it's worth, but that's Atlantic's choice, not Jewel's. And as for the new album itself, it should be very good, highlighted by Satellite and Carnivoer as first singles but hopefully it doesn't contain songs like Race Car Driver or Nicotine Love, some songs are better if they stay as unreleased gems that pop up once in a while in live sets. Later, Sean Hooks ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Feb 1998 19:15:34 -0500 (EST) From: Sean Hooks Subject: Jewel in NYC answer Basically, to keep a long story short, Jewel has played in only two NYC/ Manhattan venues since she has broken through. She played Irving Plaza twice in 96, once in Jan once in May. The Jan show was a quality "old Jewel" show all acoutic solo, the May show she used a band and it was simulcast on the internet. And in 97 she played two consecutive dates in early March at the Beacon Theatre, notoriously two of her poorer shows ever, especially the first of the two, Jewel was noticeably ill, the crowd was atrociously disrespectful, and the set was barely an hour long. Second night crowd was somewhat better and Jewel was in better spirits but her illnes and voice were still decidedly subpar. Of course, this leaving out the non-headlining shows she's done, ie: Jingle Ball or opening for Neil Young, both in Madison Square Garden, also omitted are her early gigs at places like Ludlow Street Cafe, her numerous TV appearances at stuff like 120 Minutes, Regis and Kathy Lee, and Letterman, and it also does not include her stints in other parts of NY, ie: Jones Beach, upstate NY, etc. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Feb 98 21:12:29 PST From: "Pat Lytle" Subject: Re: jewel-digest V3 #140 I was wondering if anyone knows if it cost money to go to the EDA events. I was helping my brother paint his room, when the song came on. I stopped to listen to it and when it ended, i was hooked. I saw her on Much Music's Intimate and Interactive a couple weeks later, (loved that), borrowed POY from my cousin and here i am now. Anyways, i only have POY, so i am asking any kind, generous EDA (not that you all aren't) to copy a piece of Angelfood for me. I'll provide the tapes and pay for the shipping and handling. I know there are many different kinds of Angelfood, but which ones have the best recording and non-POY songs? Please email me privately.
