This is so fantastic to see, first of all. Unfortunately, from Mike's recent post, I gather that there has been a problem with large list traffic. To cut down on all that list traffic, I'd be willing to take up the reins of the defunct Adopt-A-Newbie program to explain the p's and q's of the list. That is, if people think it's necessary. Or is there some other reason the program was scrapped? My impression was there was nobody left to run it... Anyway, somebody that has a clue, let me know. - -todd ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Feb 1998 23:01:33 -0600 From: "Michael P.McDonald" Subject: Jewel on Letterman tonight On letterman tonight they had a tape from the Grammies, they were asking people questions. Post Grammy Show (Pre-Grammy interview) On E! post-Grammy broadcast they had an interview with Jewel (J) and her brother Atz (A), which was really a pre-Grammy interview. The three E! hosts were Todd Newton (TN), Melissa Rivers (MR) and David Adelson (DA). Here's the transcript give or take a few words. (DA) did the interview. START OF INTERVIEW: (DA) I'm here with Jewel, a multi-Grammy nominee Jewel, and brother Atz. Nice to meet you sir. (A) You too. (DA) How do you spell your name? (A) A-T-Z (DA) A-T-Z. Atz. Jewel, you once said when you recorded POY you expected it to sell maybe 35,000 copies. Now, it's going, what, almost 10 million internationally and counting. Obviously, you're surprised? (J) I am surprised, especially for a Folk Album. (DA) And it's interesting, also, that the Grammy voters love you. They nominated you twice last year and once this year. What does Grammy mean to you as an award? (J) I don't know really. It's interesting. I have a better feeling for the audience, the fan base, the voting polls.... It's nice to be recognized by your peers... (DA) Now given that this has been such a whirl wind on the last record, have you had time to write songs and to record songs for a new album? (J) I recorded a whole new album a year and a half ago, but POY started doing really well, so it's kind of in the can. I'll have to re-record. But I'm doing a book of poetry of mine own poetry, it's called "A (K)night without Armor", coming out in May, I think. And, I'm also doing the lead in Ang Lee's new film. So it's a lot of work. I don't think the album will happen for a while. (DA) Have you started shooting the film? (J) No, I start on the 1st. (DA) Are you nervous about that? (J) Yeah, it's a very rigorous career, a very rigorous endeavor, it's very emotional and really exciting. (DA) So all eyes will be peeled on you as embark on a film career and obviously there's expectations for a follow-up record too. Are you going to let that impact you at all? (J) That's ok, I feel comfortable. It's been FIVE years since my 1st record. I've written TWO HUNDRED SONGS since then and I've just gotten better. I've matured. (DA) Atz, are you also an artist? (A) Yeah, music, guitar, harmonica, mouthheart(?), a little bit of everything. (DA) That's great. Are you looking at doing a professional career as well? (A) Yeah, it all starts with coming out with her every once in a while and getting out of Alaska and getting a little bit of insight. I definitely benefit from being able to go watch what she's done and just a great example for me to follow. END OF INTERVIEW BACK IN STUDIO: (DA) As a man, I'm not ashamed to admit that that young lady makes me weak in the knees :-) She has quite an acting career ahead of her..... Obviously, a long, long career ahead of her.... (MR) Oh, she's adorable. (TN) She has one of those albums that just will not stop. ___________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Feb 1998 01:26:34 -0500 (EST) From: Albert Sze-Wei Wang Subject: Re: Jewel's next album (LONG) I really apologize this message got so long, but I think I got everything off my chest now. :) In our last heroic episode, Mike Connell said: I wrote: >> I don't think Jewel is going to get any more popular now in the U.S. >> than she already is. Mike said: > On this one I differ. While she certainly was one of the hot stars last > year, I think that with some of the more diverse stuff that will likely > be on her next album, likely "to be released" singles such as Carnivore, > Satelitte, (hopefully) 1000 Miles Away, Love Me Just Leave Me Alone and > (hopefully) Nicotine Love could pull in many of the folks that didn't > care either way before, and may even sway some of the Jewel bashers. I think the perspective I'm taking is one of a person who knows a lot of people who bought PoY because of the popularity of her singles, but when they got PoY were very disappointed that the material wasn't what they expected. Sure, PoY sold millions and millions, but I've had to keep saying to people, Jewel's new album is going to be awesome because she has a ton of new material, etc. The fact is, I shouldn't need to keep saying this or continue to have to defend Jewel's music. Jewel has new material and a ton of excellent songs and there is frankly not going to be any better time than right now from a business perspective and from a publicity perspective to get things going. If Atlantic wants Jewel to maintain the current level of her popularity and record sales, I think they've already fumbled the ball. In my opinion from what I've been seeing, initial excitement over Jewel is beginning to cool off (not here on the list of course, but for the popular music crowd) as people turn to other artists like Shawn Colvin, Paula Cole, Sarah McLachlan, et al. and sink their money into these albums and move on. Someone cited Alanis Morisette and she is actually an example of what *NOT* to do. You *don't* wait that long because you lose your momentum and the lag time between albums increase. I follow Sarah McLachlan now, it's something I didn't do before I joined the Jewel list. Nettwerk has been doing an excellent job putting out singles of new material, pressing live material, giving the fans what they want. There wasn't a long gap between FTE and Surfacing and as someone who follows Tara and Sarah, I am VERY pleased with Nettwerk. I cannot at all say the same for Atlantic. Now as a number of EDAs noted ;) from a devoted follower of Jewel perspective, this may not be a bad thing since the non-diehards and pop trendies will drop off and Jewel will start playing in smaller venues. This may very well be the point, I don't know. But from a business point of view, if Atlantic wants to capitalize on Jewel's popularity, the window of opportunity is closing in my opinion. Jewel has so much to offer, and if you want to reach the maximum number of people, you launch your second stronger album at the height of your popularity and while people are hungry. If you wait too long, you've starved them out and they may or may not care anymore- ala Alanis. Again, this may not be a bad thing. :) Sure Fritz Creek Store in Fall (assuming it stays on time) may still do well. But the key here is that time is lost. You really have to have a finger on the pulse of your constituents if you want to get your message, music, etc out. IMO, Atlantic hasn't been doing this. They've milked POY for all it's worth and I don't think they understand that at this juncture in the game it's beginning to become a liability. I bought yet another Sarah McLachlan single today (Sweet Surrender) a song from her Surfacing album. No sign of any Jewel singles anywhere. In fact the Jewel markers are gone from the bins in a lot of stores. Nettwerk just keeps cranking those Sarah singles out, and they're wonderful little singles to have for $3. > Personally, if the fall-release date sticks, I think she's going to be > mega-huge a year from now :-) I sure hope so. I left this list for a while and very much got a view of the world from the non-diehard casual Jewel fans. These are people who are not nearly as fanatically about Jewel as we are, like her voice, music, and message, but are beginning to reach the point where they're not really sure they care anymore because nothing is happening. There's nothing more to buy or listen to- so they move on. As far as they're concerned, there's no more Jewel material out there. They're still warm now, but in a few months and definitely by next year, if they've found their new favorite flavor, they probably won't pick up a new Jewel album. Sure FCS may *eventually* do exceptionally well, but it's time lost. I want to see Jewel albums come out at least once every 2 years. If they keep fumbling the ball, Jewel albums will continue to come out late after protracted hiatuses because the profit margins aren't high enough, etc. Altantic is waiting too bloody long. Of course *we'll* buy Jewel albums no matter what, but we are unfortunately not most people. I know the EDAs will always have faith in Jewel. But in this industry, timing is damn important. The Grammy's have just passed, the new popular songs are chosen, and I keep thinking to myself that had Fritz Creek Store come out ideally just before the Grammy's it would have been a total killer in terms of timing. Have a big publicity party- when Jewel was doing the talk shows she could have pushed her new album. Jewel is still fresh in the minds of people last year and you can bet that people would have swarmed out to get a new Jewel album. And since she was nominated for a category this year, she's still on the minds of people. You can build on the new songs- feed the frenzy while the stove is at its hottest and the fish are hungriest. Wait too long and too many fish die and it takes longer to rebuild the population. Subsequently the gap between albums lengthens. Can you imagine how much of a killer it would have been to see Jewel play Carnivore or Satellite on Leno instead of Foolish Games? What way that would have been to launch a new album. > Mike :-) > P.S. Esp Taylor, handling both instruments, and with a deeper, much improved voice! :) I'm not a newly converted Hanson fan, but they do have talent. This is an annual week preceding the Junos (music awards for Canadians), which draws music and broadcast industry types to Toronto for a week of showcases and live performances, mostly by Canadian artists (Steve is a displaced Canadian of course). :) Its similar to weeks like NXNE and SXSW, with all the label A&R reps in town and potential signings resulting from the performances and showcases by unsigned artists. There are often surprise gigs and cameo appearances by whatever musicians may show up during the week. (Cranberries are currently recording in Toronto..hmm..) Steve's shows are listed in NOW magazine (Toronto entertainment weekly newspaper) as follows (please keep in mind, these dates are subject to change, to be sure, contact the CMW website and/or the venues in advance): Tuesday Mar 3 - Horseshoe Friday Mar 6, 11pm - Holy Joe's (following a 10pm performance by local Kevin Fox) Saturday, Mar 7 - C'est What (the wonderful Michelle MacAdorey from Crash Vegas is also on that bill.) I might add that these three clubs are my favorite three clubs in Toronto! Unfortunately they will likely be short sets since each night will feature many performers, but still, it will be very cool! Besides Steve's performances, there are listings for the must-see Sarah Slean, Kevin Fox, Wild Strawberries, Holly McNarland, Wide Mouth Mason, Matthew Good Band, Tory Cassis, Rusty, King Cobb Steelie, Dayna Manning, Barstool Prophets and many more. Canadian Music Week is gonna rock! Here are some web sites if you're thinking of coming: www.eye.net - Eye Weekly magazine (entertainment weekly) www.now.com - Now Magazine (entertainment weekly) www.cmw.com - official Canadian Music Week site I must warn anyone thinking of attending that typos and last-minute changes to these schedules often happen when there is this much going on, so it's always a good idea to call ahead to be sure. Thanks go to Steve Ito, who first noticed these listings and relayed the information which I swiped for this post on the #EDA IRC channel! Best!
