Speaking of books that remind us of Jewel's work, I recommend "Range of Motion" by Elizabeth Berg. I first heard of it when an EDA recommended it about year ago. Elizabeth's writing is very poetic and very symbolic. It really reminds you of Jewel's songs, especially the sad and tragic ones like "Adrian". I got like 8 digests come in over the last two days and am just catching up now. I've read plenty of posts now and gotten to know who's who and what their opinions are. Kat brings up so many good points, she adds perspective to it all. It's cool that everyone can express their opinions even though they may not be streamlined with the norm. It's good to be objective as you add more sides to a given situation. Anyway, I've never met Kat, but I feel like I know her so well already and it's basically because of this mailing list, I've gotten the chance to meet someone who I can really identify with. Anyway, its really not worth writing to her coz she's really dull anyway...heheheh just joking. I really want her all to myself. But I've gotten something pretty special to me out of this phenomenon we call Jewel-digest so thanks. I owe some people a lot of gratitude!!! Take care EDA's Bodhi, Angel Down Under ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Feb 1998 01:25:58 +0000 From: "Ryan Wyche" Subject: Musicians and other artists Hello Everyone... Just a thought to share in responce to the quotin' angel's post... "oh yah, i don't know if any of you noticed all of the things that musicians take for granted. all of them seem to say that love is pure, that your soul is your essence, that you have a soul at all." It's hard for me to imagine taking these things for granted, when I have put myself through so much trying to learn more and understand more about them. Being an artist myself may be part of why I see it this way, but I think most of those you may be referring to might think about it along similar lines... We don't take them for granted, on the cotrary, they are some of the most important things to us... we are usually more concerned with these things, (and the lack of that concern that we see in those around us) than we are concerned with things such as money, or our place in the society in which we may or may not be living. After all, what is really more important than personal and world PEACE, LOVE both for yourself and those around you, and for nature, and the HAPPINESS that comes from nurturing your soul and living life to it's fullest? I have more thoughts to share, but they will come soon in a slightly longer and broader responce to several current things. Until then, I hope you all are smiling and remembering to enjoy your "artistic" side in life. Take Care... "Your life becomes what you believe" -Jewel Make your life extraordinary! I just got on this list and it wasn't at all what I thought it would be. Some things are nice, like the threads and stuff, and the info on Jewel. But all this hate mail and gossip and judgement is driving me crazy. For the love of god we're supposed to be her fans, not judges.I think that since Jewel got more popular we got people on the list who like her for her two radio hits, and that's fine, but some people have to be more appreciative of Jewel. They should ask themselves this: Do I have even half that talent? The answer is usually no. Anyways, i don't care if she walks around with fruit roll up underwear on her head, she's Jewel, she's got the same talent, the same attitude, and she's the same angel that she was and always will be. That's my two cents, and I don't give it very often. Majick The Racecar Driving Angel ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Feb 1998 21:35:40 +1100 (EST) From: Laurie Boddy Drafting Subject: more aussie action hey EDA's So I finally caught up with everything now. I don't want to respond to anyone's posts but just to say, its really great that we can all air our opinions. I respect y'all for that. Anyway, I was flicking through some of my Rolling Stone's the other day and noticed an article about Jewel. It must be like the first article about her that has appeared in Aussie RS. It was dated September 1996....yep thats right. Its a two page story entitled "Alaskan Wildchild" and lists some interesting figures (not weight haha) about her album sales. It's also got this great photo though most of you have probably seen it. If you would like a copy of this, just e-mail me whenever and I'll send it out. I also managed to find an album review for POY. This was dated November 1996...yep that's right again. (we're so far behind) So this is the transcript anyway: "The buzz in the US around Jewel is BIG. The singer/songwriter has barely hit her third decade, and it's true that her folk-driven album POY sometimes exhibits a maturity beyond her years. However Jewel's naive approach often manifests itself in lyrics so honest they end up corny. "You say he's a Jew/He'll never wear that funny hat again" she breathes on the title track, her call for anti-discrimination. The sentiment is admirable, but the result too twee. Vocally, Jewel is certainly outstanding, with the ability to change from a belting Tracy Chapman style to a pitiful wail like a more fragile Juliana Hatfield. A few years hence, and provided she makes it through the hype, Jewel ought to provide an album in the ball park of Jeff Buckley's Grace." So there you have it EDA's, should spark some thought about how you all felt when you first heard her music. I was hooked as soon as I heard WWSYS and when I got the album, it grew in me in like five minutes. Incedentally, it got 3 & 1/2 stars...between good and excellent. Some of the older EDA's may have heard of this already but I know there's been a few Newbies (Aaaaarghhhhhh...please never say that word again!!!) Take care EDA's Bodhi, angel down under ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Feb 1998 15:59:32 +0100 From: "Dr. RomeAntic" Subject: Jewel's familiar lyrics Long but I can't help it: As Kat and Luna pointed out, there are some of the verses in Jewel's songs that look familiar - and that's because they've already been used... but there are probably many others that sound preety much every day lines that we don't notice, that she could've picked up from somewhere cause she got a certain feeling about them and wanted to include them in one of her songs or make a song based on them. Many we will never know about. And on this subject (unlike the one on Selfish-Selfless thing that I won't get into cause there have been too many of heart squezzing stupid things posted about that) I ALMOST completely agree with Sean Hooks. What I have to comment on is this: Sean said: >What that means is that you literally take someone else's ideas, >incorporate them into yourself, and then make them your own. There is >no such thing as an original idea anymore, they've all been used. First of all you don't even need to take an "idea"... you can take something that's merely a thought or even less than that - cause it may mean something completely different to you that it did to the author who wrote it first and it may cause all sorts of associations to the various subject... because we are all different, not one of us think the same and we all had different experiences, etc... but otherwise this part I'm OK with! Here's where I disagree.I strongly object to the subject of "There is no such thing as an original idea anymore"! I think that is crap. It may be a bit harder to find now-a-days cause there are many people who you let think for you - meaning: mostly cause we (everyday people) read more and are confronted with so many things from the outside that are feeding us new ideas or new crap that we don't need to hear. But times are changing and people are changing (fortunately or unfortunately) and everybody has something new to say cause we all learn something that nobody else did on our unique journey of life. The problem is that many don't know how to express their ideas and some just don't want to for various reasons (like others are not worthy of knowing this, or let them find out for themselves, or they will make fun of me) but most of the times is just the biggest matter of it all and that's cause of we degrade ourselves: "I'm nobody! I couldn't possibly come up with new ideas... I'm just not smart enough... I'm sure somebody came up with this before... nobody cares what I have to say" etc... THAT'S SO WRONG!!!! People like that who never appreciate who they are will never even know that they have their unique ideas about everything... Cause we all have unique ideas - sometimes the differences are not describable in words and that may be misleading. We are deprived of one thing - it's impossible to express everything we feel and know... although many think we can and they are just making fools of themselves in the eyes who know better. I may have gone a bit of track here, but it's all connected to where I started from: Everybody is unique, everybody can come up with something new, either in the sense of upgrading what has already been sent out to the world or by starting the groundwork of a new structure that many others will finish building cause no idea is perfect when you look at it through the next pair of eyes. Well it's kind of long... I don't post much, but when I do it's cause I have something to say and that takes some explaining as well... We could all be great people, we all have SOMETHING in common, so we're NOT the same... thouse who know that already are great! - -- Dr. RomeAntic, Shy Romantic Angel "I'm 32 flavors and then some I'm taking my chances as they come I'm 32 flavors and then some I'm nobody but I am someone!" I'm not too sure about the Amen line, I have heard my grandma say that before...or close to it. She says, "Even though only Angels have wings, we will wiat to be saved. Be patient." She says that when my little cousins are crying for their mom or whatever. I don't think that she copies lyrics, I think that if she hears something nice she interprets it in her own way. It just makes it sound alot the same. We all do it, every day. It's human habit, as Jewel might say. ~*~Just a thought (\ô/)~*~ Love, Amy *The Optimistic Angel* ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Feb 1998 23:50:00 +0800 From: "Subashini" Subject: Re: Jewel Interviews > I hope you all enjoy it! :> BTW, can you all please make a post if anyone > finds any interviews with Jewel being printed and state the sources? Other solo acts performing are Peter Mulvey, Kevin So, and Jess Klein. The three solo acts have all been nominated for , or have won various Boston music awards. Looks to be a great show...
