Hi Angels, I agree with Joel. "The definition of selfishnes implies complete dissregard for others, and I don't belive that Jewel is in any way that far gone in the depth of human depravity." But I think those who have written approving of Jewel's "selfishness" would agree too. Kat hit the right note: . No, "selfish" is not the right word. What is, I don't know. "Selfless" and "altruistic" are all wrong too. Maybe we are talking about degrees of "selfishness". Or maybe we starting to split hairs, or trying to work out how many angels can fit on the head of a pin (as the medieval thologians did). I only desired to, gently, push the point that I my self would be willing to credit Jewel with the triat of being on the good more moral side of human nature. She has inspired in me such great passions, mostly because of he aura of innocence, to look now at my life and pull myself out more from the mire we are surrounded by each day(I am not saing that she is some some great icon that should be hailed or worshiped either). I would hate to have all of my actions boiled down to having only selfish motives(although I will be the first to point out that the majority of them are). I see Sean's point, and agree with it patialy, but still am not ready to say that the Uber caste of Human morality( aire be it completely divinely atributed) should or does include acts of a greyer scale as were listed before. All I know is that Jewel (weither it be selfish motives, and I believe they are) has a maked influence on me and many if not all of you. I would not say that selfish is a word that I would be happy tp be called, even though it is true, or would like to atribute to Jewel. Sean Hook wrote: >>Jewel placing the emphasis on the self and how all she knows is how to deal with herself, examining herself, getting in touch with herself, knowing herself....actuality it is the key to success, advancement, and coming to terms with one's inner being.<< Sean Hook, you are amazing! Thats exactlly what Ive heard for the last 7 years from people who enjoy their careers. If you don't look at what you know/got and find some skills that you can make a living off of, how can you say your happy? American society, I think, has changed how we perceive happiness.I might be getting off topic here, but please stick with what Im saying. Americans, for the majority, focus more on money and security for their families more than having a career that gives the oppertunity that you can do what you want to do. That all starts with look inwards instead of out. >> Seem illogical to anyone else?<< Huh? What? =) I also remember a Jewel quote "In silence we hear who we become"(sorry if I screwed it up). That quote goes along with this selfishness topic. The silence is when you sit and think about what your dreams are. The who we become part is how we perceieve the world around us. For myself, I had about 2 years of slience and being lonnely. Fortunetly, I taught myself to be optimistic and more compassionate than cynical in that time of silence. I think there is a better or nicer word for it. That word, whatever it is, has left my head for the moment, but I see what was trying to be explained. Still, as true as that post was, and the answers to it(including this one) have us coming to conclusions about someone we really don't even know(personally). I've fine with whats being discussed and all, but something seems, somehow, wrong. So, whenever this happens I try to flip the order and read it as if it were addressed to me. What would I think after reading a post like that? He brought up good points and they cant be proven wrong, so, in the end I'd conclude he was right. To me, the point where one has the right to criticize anyone about anything is when that person can challenge or at least match the others skill in that same area(so they "have room to talk"). Because of this reason I tend to stick to just admiring and respectly Jewel from afar, which leads to an attempt to take neutral positions in arguments, if possible, and trying to figure out where I can see the whole picture. After all, in reply to the "Selfish, selfless" post thare are many sides to it: What we as individuals think of it, what Jewel herself sees herself as, and looking at the whole thing at a distance and trying to see it for what it is. That last one is harder to answer, especially since we have to make time from figuring out who we are to find out what someone else is. I'm not going to take a particluar stand regarding that post. If I want the answer I'll find someway to find out what Jewel sees herself as, then I think I'll feel I know enough to make an opinion. We have been together off and on for four years, but the last time we got together a lot of things went wrong and I lost him for a while. But now we're back together and better than ever. He has a camp up in Maine that is his and his alone and we go up there sometimes(this Friday actually) and we just kind of lay in bed all day and snuggle and do all those happy things that you do when you're in love. SO WHAT IF JEWEL HAS GAINED WEIGHT! i don't care about the nailpolish she has on, who she was seen at the last dinner, if she's wearing more makeup then usual...and esp. if she has gained weight. i didn't see the leno show, and to tell you the truth i've never really examined her weight, since on tv the person always looks larger then usual; the reason is because I JUST DON'T CARE. i'm sorry again for sounding mean about this; it's just i don't understand who we can be everyday angels when it sounds more like this little fan club that's obessed with her every move. i'm sure jewel doesn't want that, she has enough people over reacting about a few pounds on <'she must be depressed'> or a few pounds off <'she must be anorixic!'> please understand though i really don't want to be mean to diana, i just really want this to come out. another thing, someone sent a message about being selfish..in it he mentioned that being in the peace corps, helping homeless....so on are selfish acts. i do agree they are selfish in some view: when i help homeless it's not because of getting a nice college application or even karma. it's about getting that warm feeling in my heart; it's natural. it's human. i was brought up to do this; it's like eating...i feel hungry if i don't help others....i am selfish for wanting to fill up that hunger...but i don't think that's the right word for it. why do we do things we enjoy? i enjoy helping others...doesn't mean i want a cute college application, bills paid or a nice looking life on a sheet of paper. just means i want to do what my passions are. kat imperfect angel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Feb 1998 08:08:48 EST From: QRyche76@aol.com Subject: Re: Selfish a good thing?
