It kind of rambles and jumps around topically, like an obscurist poem. Central themes seem to be anti-narcissism( You're in love with your clone, which means you're alone) and tolerance(You'll choke on your hate). As far as I know this song has never been explained or prefaced with any kind of lengthy story in concert. The Jewelstock intro to the song mentions how the word "tonto" means "stupid" in the Indians' language and how Tonto thought the Lone Ranger was his friend, when all along he was calling him stupid. And how don't we all feel like that sometimes, she says. It's never been one of my favorite Jewel songs just because it's too cutesy and sing-songy without having any real emotional, logical, or lyrical depth. The line "You'll choke on your hate is the one truly powerful, emotive moment during the song. That line in particular comes across very powerfully at certain live recordings after she had toyed around with the song a little and put some more emphasis on that particular line. Notable during the Tiny Lights Tour performances of this song. K . > > lol Kristy =) Kristy, this is an ongoing tradition that began about 18 months ago when Jewel started to play large venues. We did this in an effort to let her know that we were still out there, that we still cared, and of course, to get her attention. Jewel has always responded to these signs with acknowledgement, and often with dialogue. Lovable Lawyer Larry produced a standardized poster that EDAs would display at every show, always drawing a smile from Jewel's often stressed face. =) Anyone still have a pic of those posters on a web page? I still have mine hangin on the wall! =) Crunch! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Feb 1998 04:20:18 EST From: HRENB@aol.com Subject: Re: Changing Jewel, Growing Popularity (kinda long) I think that the changes and situations that become different/ difficult as someone increases in popularity are controlled by the artist to a degree. To say Jewel has no control over her expanding popularity isn't really true. She's all over the media, at award shows, videos, magazines, etc., and a main reason the other album is being delayed so long is partially because POY was and still is selling so well. She should have done another record by now. Its not like she had a shortage of material. A band like Pearl Jam had a similar meteoric rise, and to stave off some of the difficulties of fame, they stopped making videos and started oversaturating their market by putting an album a year out, like bands in the 60s and 70s often did. (While I dont suggest Jewel quit making Videos, I wish she would record more often). Anyways by touring the world, playing bigger venues and her extensive media coverage, it is apparent that she has chosen the path to superstardom. As much as Im sure she would love to play tiny venues more often (she still does play them a bit), it's a situation that she created herself. It's hard watching her popularity grow because it makes it harder for us to see her more intimately, but rare gifts like hers I guess are meant to be shared with the World. To close with an extreme example- I was disappointed at all the Hollywood stars who came out after Princess Di's death and said they hated the pressures of fame and paparrazi and they should be banned (George Clooney was big on this ) Well, sorry George, papparrazi and pressure is what comes with million dollar contracts and huge houses and cars. (Papparazzi didn't kill Di, and idiot drunk driver did). Dont like it, quit TV and move to Iowa to act in small town theater. I guarantee after a few months nobody will bother you. In the same way, if Jewel really feels like the pressures of fame are mounting (i say this because I pray she wont get burned out like lots of other young artists), she should just chill in San Diego or Alaska for a year. Maybe play a few unannounced gigs under "Anais Nin" or something. Sorry so long, sure Ill get flamed but I like counterpoints, thanks for listening BARRY LONE WOLF ANGEL ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Feb 1998 12:16:30 EST From: Xena436@aol.com Subject: Do you have???? Don't worry, they are good thoughts. I think that we are very lucky to have Jewel, I mean, think about it. Jewel is the best thing that ever happened to me. I just wanted to say how lucky we are to have such a wonderful person like Jewel. One reason that makes her the best thing is she doesn't try to kill herself by using drugs. That is some special person. I think that we should be happy with her and her desions. We are EDAs, we are here to support Jewel. I love her, her music and all of you guys!! What he said was right on. One of the things that got me so interested in Jewel was her emphasis on developing yourself. I have for a long time felt that if people worried more about developing their own philosophies and striving for something more and better for themselves, that the world would be a much different place. This struggle will enlighten individuals and motivate them to help others in there struggles. This is a favorite quote of mine on the subject. "It is one of the most beautiful compensations in life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself" Ralph Waldo Emerson This is why Jewel's music reaches so many people. She is working towards understanding herself and becoming something better. This is seen through her music which answers the many questions, thoughts, and feelings we all have. It is great when you can understand others and THIER needs, but you can't do that if you don't know yourself. Sometimes we need to take an hour or two for ourselves just to stay in touch with our beings, and Jewel really points that out ~Ώτ And also in reply to "I'm not sure" Jewel inspired me in music also. I am not a very good singer, but I play the piano and I am learning the flute and I find myself unable to tear myself away sometimes. I also love to watch her singing, the way she pours her whole self into it is beautiful. And when I listen to certain songs of hers, I can't help but cry or laugh or whatever she portrays in herself to do the same. She draws that out and I love her for it.
