Separating what we know from what we see. Money changes people. Time changes people. And above all, people change people. I DONT KNOW JEWEL. and I doubt that any one else on this list does. I fell in love with her music, and a part of me would like to know her . However a part of me doesn't really care. who are these people that we see on TV, and why do we need to know them? Society is very curious, and that goes along with human nature . .This behavior often leads to people idolizing a figure who he/she has never come into contact with. A person who might as well be fictional . Someday perhaps we will look at ourselves and the people around us, instead of looking to others for questions that we are capable of asking. I guess what I'm trying to say with this post is that as much as we identify with a performer, we don't know them. And they don't know us. Love Jewel for what her music says . Love her for the ideal she represents. Love her for what you believe her to be...Anything other than that is fake anyway. " What someone gets out of the way I lived my life can be immediately diminished by them thinking I'm a phenomenon. I'm not a phenomenon. I didn't think I was that talented. It wasn't until I really decided, talent or no talent, I have to do what makes me feel like a real person. I would be absolutely useless onstage if people looked at me like a phenomenon. It makes me so scared that I could cry right now." That last part, about her being scared and wanting to cry, maybe that's how she feels all of the time and doesn't really know what to say to her fans because of it. Maybe she also gets angry at them for thinking she's a phenomenon and doesn't know how to deal with it. I don't really think we should worry about how she feels towards her fans. Of course she appreciates us, but we obviously scare her. I hope someone understands this. I think that we should let Jewel move on instead of doing the same things over and over again. I think that her career can only get better as time passes and only if she changes a little. ~The Fumbling Angel ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Feb 1998 22:22:34 -0500 (EST) From: Sean Hooks Subject: My reply to Harry Wong Well, after reading your many-paged response to my re-post concerning Jewel's popularity, two things strike me. One, just the fact that you spent so much time dissecting my post shows that it had an effect on you, for good, bad, whatever. And second, just try and find one person who wouldn't want another Jewelstock. I guarantee you you can't find a single one, not out of people who were at the first one anyway, either show. To say that it wouldn't be the same is true, nothing is every exactly the same as any other thing. But Jewel in a "for-EDAs-only" concert at a tiny venue like that would be a godsent, something that every EDA should be praying for. Either that or we can revel in her popularity in which case we'll be seeing her do concerts in 10,000 seat arenas next to the couple that talks during the entire show and the 6'9 guy with the big head. Either that or we might be able to see her in movies sitting in between a group of teenage girls who talk loudly about Titanic during Jewel's movie and a group of boys who just keep saying "We better see Jewel's tits or this movie sucks." Yeah, that'd be great. No, we don't want another Jewelstock when we can have all that Later, Sean Hooks "You never realize what you have until it's gone." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Feb 1998 18:53:37 EST From: IciciLe@aol.com Subject: Re: Question when some one really .looks up to some 1 like 4 instance....jewel. you can get heart broken bye the slightest dark tainted move they make. why this is .....When you idolize some1 u c them as being perfect. everything they do is perfect in your eyes. and when they do something "imperfect" it hurts you. you thought they were perfect before and if they change you have to adapt and realize that they are human too ... humans do get temptations. even if you say " i liked jewel because she was imperfect... like a "real" person" you still think she is "perfection in some way. in this case her imperfection is ironically "perfect" that is why you criticize musicians out of dissapointment for change - -genisis`ethereal angel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 05 Feb 1998 10:44:18 -0500 From: "Seth D. Fulmer" Subject: Jewel's criticism Please Read...I know that this topic has become old. I hope I'm not just frustrated and letting it out on this topic(I've eaten a lot of people's livers tonight). Jewel has always been for friendship between one another, doing service for one another, and leading oneself to one's own destiny. She writes songs for her own pleasure. I'm 199% sure that if she were unhappy with something, she would stop doing it. However, just because she comes on a television program and sings a song of which some are tired...people complain. I seriously doubt that she sings songs with the intent to please "only" the EveryDay Angels. There are still a lot of people out there that don't know of her Non-POY songs, and to them FG, YWMFM, and WWSYS are the only good songs to them. The EDAs only comprise no more than 2000(I don't know the exact figures currently) people. There are a lot more people on the list that don't even know of other songs that she sings, nor do they care. If suddenly she would come on a television or radio program and announced "Ok, tonight I will be singing a relatively new song...It's named after a friend from Alaska who killed himself because he was fat/overweight/____(fill in the blank)" and started singing it, well #1, there would probably be complications with Atlantic Record Corp....#2, the people outside the Jewel list might be a little upset that they didn't sing the best song(to them) of hers. There would be a lot of side reactions as well. I think until she releases another CD, all she really can sing are the 4 songs she's been singing in public...FG, YWMFM, WWSYS, and ASB. I really hope I didn't offend anybody, but I'm a little fatigued by the disgust with Jewel singing the same song over without consideration of the consequences for her. There's been a lot of things going on that have kept me away from keeping up with the list. Anyway, blah blah blah. I'm posting now 'coz I've just starting catching up with some recent digests and I see there's till this ongoing discussion about has Jewel become this, has Jewel become that... It was almost one year ago now that I first met Jewel on a Seattle street - I wrote about that ('coz I write journal-like): "And for those who ask, Jewel is sweet. That's sweet defined as 'being marked by gentle good humour and kindliness' (the jazz definition fits too =AD 'played in a straightforward melodic style')." =20 Today, as fate would have it, I ran into Jewel and Michel, her boyfriend, walking along a street in Victoria, Canada. She's doing a special concert in that city tomorrow night. Anyway, she's the same, sweet, person who really appreciates the support of her fans. Michel is a really warm guy and together, the feeling I got, is that they're just two cool people, who are in love, and have lives that are hectic and too often in the public eye. All that goes with such conditions apply.=20 I've met a lot of people in my life (according to the results of the recent poll, I'm one of the EDAs on the older edge of the spectrum - hey, closer to Steve Poltz in age than to Hanson) - and, you don't need the qualifier "celebrity" to say that Jewel is one of the most real, considerate, people you could ever come across in your life's path.=20 Enjoy the music, the movie, the poems, and all the other gifts she shares with us - and wish Jewel and Michel equal gifts in return. Be kind to each other, as Mr BB says, and remember Valentine's Day is for all kinds of love. There were some instructions in FAQ for this list. >P.S. I know a guy who is a sound engineer for Jewel's new cd. Now *he'd* be able to help. Of course, posting something like this will generate a flood of mail to you. I just bought the WWSYS single tonight. Cool.
