When you think about it... not too long ago she went about her business on her own. Now she has people dwelling on every little detail of her life. I am sure she understands that that comes with the territory but I can also see how sometimes all the attention could make her feel a little funny. I think Jewel is handling things well and that despite all the recognition she has been given, she still seems to be down to earth and I respect that. Hi all, Anyone who knows me, knows that I usually just observe "opinionated threads" here, but I'm gonna toss out a rare opinion of my own. I recently sent an almost identical post to Patty Griffin's list & I said the same thing almost two years ago, right here, when people were getting upset over Jewel changing then. I've worked with musicians most of my life. When any musician's work gains popularity, I always notice a large portion of their "supposedly dedicated fanbase" insisting on experiencing the same thing again & again. In other words, their most dedicated fan base resists them changing. This is an incredibly destructive thing. There's very few musicians (or artists in any medium) who enjoy being associated with any "one thing". It's a drag because it's limiting. I'm highly anticipating Jewel's various projects as she goes through these changes! Anyone who's creative absolutely has to keep moving on. In it's simplest terms, staying the same is boring & change is interesting, so Jewel (or any creative person for that matter) has to change in order to keep their work inspired. I understand how much most of you love Jewel's previous work. What I'll never understand is this ridiculous "feeling of loss" that some of you are expressing now. Jewel doesn't act 18 years old anymore. She's enjoying her success. She's trying other things of interest to her for awhile. What could possibly be wrong with that? Nothing is lost.....These new & different projects will only add to what already exists. Basically all I'm trying to say is that being resistant to change does nobody any good. I live in a year round school so we do our talent show early because some of us will go on holidays soon...... Anyway, I looked at the list of preformances, there were actors, magicians, but I was surprised at the amount of musical pices on the list this year. They included, people lip sinking and dancing to Spice girls, and that kinda thing, but there were about 5 people doing Jewel stuff, including a group of 3 girls singing angel standing by accapella, one girl playing guitar and singing to CARNIVORE [this really surprised me because Jewel has never been to our city. Any EDA outhere go to Terry Fox????????]. And one girl playing piano and singing to foolish games!!!! I was so happy, I always though that know one in my school likes Jewel [I have to tell ya, I don't know anyone who likes her besides you guys and my mom! I'm afraid I don't think she has achived the same status here in Canada that she has in the US- Please don't flame me!] Anyhow, I think I may look forward to watching the talent show this year. Greg ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Feb 1998 00:12:36 -0500 (EST) From: Sean Hooks Subject: Jewel was always SURE OF HERSELF and somewhat stuck up In another post I put forth an old post of mine that puts forth my feelings about what Jewel's popularity would do to her. And I think a lot of what I warned of then has unfortunately come true. But I am also of the belief that Jewel was always cocky and self-assured. She tries to be humble but she always knew she was destined for greatness and knew that if she didn't give up her dreams or sacrifice her pride and herself, she would make it and be able to do what she loves for a living. Music is also not the only thing she loves. So I think the criticism and cynicism about her fame is one thing, it is deserved. But criticizing her for being over-confident or conceited or something is not so accurate because she was like that even before she was famous. To achieve success in this world you HAVE TO be cocky and self-assured. You have to know how great your talent is and that you are a superior gifted person and that if you work hard and never give up you will make it. It's like in sports, the great teams are teams that expect to win, teams that know they are going to win. They can come off as cocky or arrogant but they're not, they're just doing what it takes to succeed, to win. I admire Jewel's self-pride and love of herself and she revels in the fact that she is something special, a unique and wonderful person. Remember, it's the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the word...that do. Later, Sean Hooks ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Feb 1998 00:06:57 -0500 (EST) From: Sean Hooks Subject: What Jewel's popularity has done(aka: I called it) This is an old message that I posted to the list back in the day, see if any of my prognosticating has turned out to be accurate. Sean Jewel's popularity is a bad thing I've waxed philosphic on this trend before but the way people on the digest are talking, I don't think you realize what you are setting yourselves up for. Jewel on MTV is a bad thing(although I love the song Quiet Warrior and was impressed with the performance). Jewel reaching number one on the VH1 countdown would be a bad thing. Letterman appearances and the like are bad things. It's easy to get excited about your favorite artist getting some play and popularity, but be careful what you wish for. I've seen many a legitimate young artist get turned into a one-hit wonder by such behavior, or worse, a superstar. I don't think Jewel wants to be super-popular ala Madonna, Alannis, Mariah, Whitney. She complained incessently about how Sean Penn couldn't even walk down the street without being mobbed and how just being with him was very intimidating and scary for a girl from Alaska. Is that what we want for her? Do you want to see her at arenas or small clubs and venues? Do you want another Jewelstock at a place like the Bearsville Theatre? If so, you can't want her to be popular. You can't have your cake and eat it too. WWSYS is one of my favorite Jewel songs but I've been hearing it for a year and a half, I hear it every day, see the video every day, if I'm watching TV or listening to the radio. And I change the channel as soon as possible. That opening bass riff actually hurts my ears at this point as I shun from the song that made me a Jewel fan. I know there are people out there going, "well, he's just selfish and doesn't want what's best for our Jewel." Wrong. I care about Jewel's future a lot. The fact that Pieces of You is a very radio unfriendly folk album and still it went gold scares the hell out of me. The next album could be disastruous. Atlantic is gonna promote it a lot more, and the songs from what I gather, are gonna be much more upbeat and radio friendly. Not good things. I want to tell everyone how great she is. I want to play my tapes for all my friends. I want to tell everyone that she is the greatest thing since sliced bread and how her concerts are mind blowing emotionally moving experiences. But I don't. I contain myself, takes a lot of will power. But I know it's for the best. I have a couple of friends who are into her and will go to the concerts with me, that's all I need. So, just again, be careful what you wish for. Jewel will be corrupted by popularity not helped by it. Please let WWSYS be her last hit radio/video for at least ten years. Look at Tracy Chapman, she has had the perfect career. Ten years ago in 86 Fast Car came out. Then she disappeared to the Z100 MTV world and stayed true to her roots audience. Then ten years down the road she comes back to the top 40 billboard MTV pop radio world with Give ME One Reason. That should be our model. TV appearances and soundtracks and movies and videos and surfrider specials and VH1 duets are not necessary anymore. She's popular enough, stop promoting yourself Jewel, we wanna see you, not a speck of blonde hair that I have to strain to see from the 1500th row. I don't wanna be able able to say I knew her when, I want to know her now continuously. I am not trying to stunt her artistic growth, her message is an important one that should be heard, but the more people that hear the message in the pop sell-out context, the more that miss the point. Go ahead, flame away, just make sure you don't regret it when I'm saying told you so a couple months or a year or two down the road when this digest has thousands of members and events like Jewelstock are impossible and she won't be putting her arm around any of you or taking pictures or signing autographs because she's scared of stalkers, the press, and fame/the media in general. Sorry if that sounded bitter, just hate to lose something that I care about. Later, Sean Hooks "Don't play with me, cause you're playing with fire." - - -Rolling Stones "Me is success and the media, it is a very hot fire, I just don't want Jewel and us, her fans, to get burned. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Feb 1998 14:31:29 +0800 From: "Subashini" Subject: Re: jewel-digest V3 #83 > But the bands don't question the fans, why should the fans question the bands? > > Sean O'Riley Uh-oh, I think Sean Riley is the smartest man alive! :) I really *cannot* comprehend why people are losing "faith" in Jewel. A lot of people commented negatively about her clothes and make-up..and I have a problem with that. Jewel--she has spent all her life milking cows, sleeping in cars, washing in restrooms, and is finally enjoying the fruits of her labour. (does that sound lame or what? :) Anyway, if she wants to wear make-up and nice clothes, LET HER. That does not automatically make her a Barbie doll. It also does not mean that she is succumbing to "mainstream Hollywood" or whatever it is. It just means that she finally has some money, she's enjoying herself, and she's experimenting with her looks. It does not mean she's forgotten her roots. Secondly, as many people have said, Jewel is NOT God. She's human, so sometimes she gets bored. Of course she's sick of POY songs, she's been singing it for what, 3 years now? If she wants to explore other avenues, more power to her! Sometimes, people just need to take a break from what they're doing. She's been touring relentlessly for years now, Atlantic seems to think she's a horse or something, and not human like the rest of us. She's just suffering from burnout. Even actors go through this. She just needs to take a break, go act in a movie or whatever, just do something *different*, and she'll return to singing--*inspired*. The fans are the ones who are finally going to benefit from this, right? And lastly, we should appreciate Jewel for her honesty and frankness. It's such a rare trait these days. We should be glad that she feels comfortable enough to say that "music's getting redundant", instead of saying happily "I luuuuuuurrrrrrvvvvve what I'm doing!" (followed by a cheesy smile for the masses) and then trashing a hotel room the next day. This is because they have made an emotional investment in the static public image of their heros. Fans make a mental deal between themselves and the one they adore: stay my ideal and I'll love you forever. When a hero behaves differently than they expect or their public image changes, it is threatening to that emotional investment and a betrayal of the pact. The fan becomes like a wronged lover and acts in any of the ways a wronged lover would act; angry, depressed, hurt etc. The solutions to this is the same for any relationship. Respect the other person _as_ a person, not an icon. Allow for change and growth. Accept the fact, if it occurs, that you are no longer compatible and move on without regrets. The difference, you must realize from the start, is that this is a one-sided affair. Expecting any kind of reciprocation on a personal level is unrealistic.
