Although tracks from these studio sessions may surface on FCS, it's only a small fraction of possible material. Those were really Jewel's first major sessions where she was in control & she's gained a tremendous amount of experience since then. She's also written well over a hundred new songs since those sessions ended. For those also curious as to what exactly was recorded in Bearsville during those sessions, here's the basic info. After a week of band rehearsals, Jewel did a week of studio recordings with a great band that was comprised of: Marc Schulman - lead guitar T-Bone Wolk - bass Jerry Marotta - drums Flea (of Red Hot Chilli Peppers fame) also sat in on several sessions as did several other miscellaneous musicians. Various versions of the following tracks were recorded: A Boy Needs A Bike Carnivore Jessica (2 versions-electric & acoustic band) Tough Girl Innocence Maintained Deep Water Satellite Fragile Heart Sometimes It Be That Way You Were Meant For Me (yet another version w/Flea on bass) Love Me Just Leave Me Alone Fading Away (also known as "I'm Fading") Run Tonto Run The following week was dedicated to solo acoustic sessions. Versions of these tracks were recorded during those sessions: His Pleasure Is My Pain Louisa & Her Blue Guitar Fragile Flame 1000 Miles Away Sometimes It Be That Way Run Tonto Run Grey Matter The Face Of Love Nicotine Love Moon Over Austin (also known as "Hetel Angel") Innocence Maintained Buttercup Absence Of Fear Brother (reworked "Nikos" with new title) Again, so much has been written since then, that this list is by no means indicative of what may actually be used on Fritz Creek Store, but it does answer your question. I'm a newbie - just joined the digest list last week and have really enjoyed reading what you all have to say about Jewel. However, I have been somewhat disturbed by some of the reactions to Jewel's recent appearance on the Jay Leno show. I'm in Australia and I don't think we get that show here, so I didn't see Jewel or hear what she had to say myself. I'm only going on what people on the list have said. If Jewel is a bit tired of music and looking forward to branching out into acting, that's perfectly understandable. That's also growth. She's a wonderful, beautiful young woman and is growing all the time. We can't stunt her growth because we want her not to change. I'm 56 and have two children who have grown up and left home. They have changed over the years and grown, and even if I don't really like some of the changes, I still love them wholeheartedly. Have faith in Jewel and if she does things sometimes you don't like too much, forgive her - as she says in "Under the Water" (which I've just discovered and think should be her next single - such a wonderful contrast to FG, which I also love): "Forgiveness is the needle that knows how to mend". But I don't think she really has done anything to be forgiven. I prefer to see her with no make-up and in simple clothes - she looks most beautiful then - but now she is in the thick of the commercial pop music industry - and we all put her there - she is forced to conform - and conformity and commercialism do corrupt . She has to promote her singles; she has to get dressed up for things like the AMA - if she turned up in jeans and a t-shirt she would be accused of being pretentious. (And anyway, in the pictures I've seen of Jewel as some of these events she has looked just stunning!) So have a little faith in Jewel. Give some room. Let her grow. And keep loving her. I know I will. I was going to introduce myself, but I've gone on enough. Next time. I havent written on this in so long, but I feel like I should with all this Leno stuff going on. I saw the Leno where jewel said her music was getting redundant. Honestly...at first I was slightly shocked by the statement, but if you think about what jewel's life has been like for the past few years trying to make a name for herself, answering the same questions about her life, her music...singing the same songs over and over in America and around the globe...I cant imagine her life not feeling a bit redundant and a bit unchallenging. Its time for her to tackle a new feat...not leave her music...never, but have some new experiences so she can be inspired to write new music, new poetry and get ready to do the touring thing all over again next fall when her new cd comes out. Jewel is one of a kind....a true talent and music is only one facet of this remarkable woman we all admire. Take it easy on her. At least she speaks the truth. So I thought I would say hello and introduce myself. I'll try to keep it short. I'm from Jewel adopted home town of San Diego, 20 years of age and a student at UCSD. The first time I ever heard Jewel was on a tape from a friend that had "Angel Needs A Ride" from the local radio station's compilation CD. I had actually heard of Jewel before, but I royally goofed up. Back in the day a friend of mine asked me to take him down to Ocean Beach when we got there he asked me to give him five bucks so he could go inside this coffee house (Java Joe's) and see his friend Jewel perform. He also invited me to go in with him...well guess what...I wouldn't give him the money. It turned out that my friend had been watching her play for a while and gave her a copy of some poetry that he had written and she asked him to autograph it for her and that's how they met. I'm still beating myself up over that. The first live Jewel performance I saw was when she was opening for Peter Murphy. I was moved. i was literally on the edge of my seat at that performance and have been a fan ever since. i later discovered that a girl in one of my classes was a family friend of Jewel's. kIt was amazing how many Jewel connections I discovered I had. But more importantly, I was lucky enough to see both of her performances at Java Joe's (after she became popular she did two barely advertised concerts at Java Joe's). For all you fans who have only seen her at large venues and especially for those of you who have never even seen Jewel live...I'm sorry. She was awe inspiring. Tears came to my eyes because of the depth of soul i saw in her performances. On top of that I was lucky enough to get a real taste of Jewel through her in between song banter. i sat next to a girl at the first show who i ended up talking to. She was this really nice girl...I think her name was Jennifer. Anyways after the show she walked up to the stage and Jewel took her by the hand and they left together. During the second show the fire marshall came because the place was so packed it had become a fire hazard and Jewel was supposed to end the show early and kshe wasn't supposed to announce why. So instead she did her yoddle song and improvised lyrics informing the audience about the situation. Then she picked up her chair and went out into the parking lot and performed right there in the parking lot. OK maybe this is obsessive, but on her way out her shoulder brushed mine and I thought to myself "I've just touched an angel!" After that night I made some major changes in my life...literally. I went from being a pre-med Biology major to being a music major. jewel had inspired me to follow my dreams and live out my life doing what I am most passionate about...singing. I felt I had a special connection to Jewel because I understood her intense passion for music...a passion that could be seen in her performances. Jewel literally changed my life...I live everyday happier now because I am doing what I love. In regards to the Jay Leno appearance. I wanted to cry...I wanted to sing her "Fading" and ask her where the fire in her heart had gone. I've seen Jewel at large venues (I attended three Lilith Fairs) and I can understand her blaze' appearance at large venues and on TV where the focus is largely on her music as opposed to her "art" of story telling, and performing, as well as making music, but I was disheartened to see that fire gone in her eyes that rooted-to-the-earth, but still up in the clouds look in her eyes. She talked about the song Fading and why she wrote it and I wonder if she is living that challenge again (If anyone wants the lyrics I know them by heart). I realize it must be hard for anyone whose ever been touched by Jewel, but it breaks my heart to see her going from almost crying over the amount of soul she's invested in a song to saying that music is redudant...Never the less I remain a fan, but more importantly a changed person because of her. OK,OK so it got long...she's had a big affect on me SORRY:-)!
