See you guyss around, Abby-Weirdo Angel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jan 1998 23:07:05 -0500 From: Crash Boy Subject: Review: Steve Poltz at the Mercury Lounge, NYC 1/22/98 hi fellow edas! and you, too, people on the Steve Poltz list. last night was very cool, as we were treated to a show at the mercury lounge in new york city given by steve poltz. i was accompanied by fellow edas amy, john, tom, and josh. thirza and abel came, but since they weren't 21, we left them at the door. nice, eh? :) according to the chalkboard outside the venue, steve was supposed to go on at 10pm, but he didn't make it up on stage until a little after 10:30pm. he played for less than an hour, about 56 minutes, but that's to be expected when playing a promotional show for a new album in front of record execs. here's the setlist. i'm not too sure about some titles. your mileage may vary: Leaving Again 98 Pounder You Were Meant For Me Oh Good Morning I Miss Waking Up With You Silver Lining Everything About You I Thought I Saw You Last Night Satan's Choir Kicking Distance Beautiful Day The Impala of My Love Waterfalls (TLC cover) Morning Song steve started out by himself for the first three songs. he told a story in the middle of YWMFM about this town in northern california called Weed, and how the road signs say "Weed - Next 3 exits". and how you had your choice of regular Weed, North Weed, and South Weed. he said to stay away from South Weed, cause it's crap. :) then he called up his musicians to the stage. John Castro on bass, and john's brother, Jim, on drums. he introduced them as "John and James, the Apostles". steve told a story during EAY how it was a love song, and that love songs are usually written with different people in mind. it's hardly ever about one particular person. well, steve had a friend, Julia, who was really beautiful, and she died over the holidays. he luckily had dinner with her a week before she died, and he told her that the bridge of the song was about her because she had these cute freckles. and he said he was glad he told her, because you never know how long you're gonna be here. he said that "Satan's Choir" came about by fooling around in the studio while recording the album, and the musicians picked up on it. afterwards, the drummer told steve that he was a hell of songwriter, but to stop writing songs about "what's-his-face". steve hopes one day that "Beautiful Day" becomes the theme for some children's show. john and jim left after "Impala", and everyone was impressed by steve's rapping on "Waterfalls". after the show, there was lots of signing of posters and cds, in addition to lots of talking. here's a few tidbits learned from steve, john, and jim: - - Jewel will be lip-synching the national anthem at the super bowl. everyone does it, and the reason is because of sound quality, especially from a large stadium. after a few takes, the best one was picked and will be played on live tv. - - john and jim had to learn to tone themselves down for the songs. jim had previously played in rock bands, and john was just used to playing louder. john also had to relearn songs to the way the studio musicians had played on the album. - - march 10th! don't forget!!!! "One Left Shoe" by Steve Poltz. - - hopefully, john and jim will be the touring musicians for steve. it would be nice, since they put in so much effort learning everything for the two dates. - - there will probably be a tour in europe first, then one in the US. starting in april? *shrug* - - steve played "Morning Song" for us. well, me, amy, john, tom, and josh. if "us" meant EDAs or just cool fans, i'm not sure. - - josh requested steve to play "The ABCs of Love" before the show. steve said he'd do it, but forgot to. while signing josh's rugburns cd, josh reminded steve, and steve told him he'd do it later. after he finished signing, steve grabbed his guitar and started singing "ABCs" for josh while sitting on the edge of the stage. then they both got up on the stage and started singing it together. it was a dream come true for josh. :) both he and steve will never forget it. well, that's pretty much it. if anyone's interested, i got a soundboard DAT recording of the show. if you want a copy, email me. [note: if you get permission from the artist, you can plug your DAT recorder into the soundboard at the mercury lounge for $30. if you don't have a DAT recorder, bring a blank DAT to put into their own DAT recorder. they also have a cassette deck, but last night it was broken.] i hope i didn't bore anyone. take care. 'bye! eric :) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jan 1998 23:02:39 -0500 From: George S Stagani Subject: TNT Hi everyone, Just wanted to let everyone know that Jewel could be mentioned on TNT tonight from 10:30pm to 12:30am on a Super Bowl special live from San Diego. I heard them say at the beginning that they would talk about the Super Bowl music "a little later." Take Care... George ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Jan 1998 00:22:41 EST From: "Whitney C" Subject: superbowl, angelfood, threads I was just listening to the radio and they were talking about Jewel singing the national anthem. They said when she was approached about this idea she went and called Steve Poltz (they said he was the guy in the YWMFM video who "nibbles on her shoulder"). They said Steve was like, "Hell yeah! That means I get tickets right?" Thought I'd let you know. I was thinking of some new threads and about this: What are SOME of your favorite Jewel songs and why? Also, I was wondering if anyone would be willing to dub the Innerchange Days for me?! Thanks! - -Whitney ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V3 #50 **************************
