Hello! This is my first time ever posting anything and I am rather new to the list even but I really enjoy it! The main reason I am writing is about the Wizard of Oz performance of Jewel- can it be found anywhere? I am really interested in seeing it and from this list is the first time I've ever heard about it. So, I guess any info. would be a great help! Also, since I noticed everyone else sharing how they first were introduced or saw Jewel, I will share my story. It isn't very interesting or exciting but I'm sure you will all understand. I first heard her because my mom (of all people!) bought her tape, POY, before I had even heard of her. I was at the "country" stage in my life and didn't listen to much else. She played it and I was like, "Wow, she has a nice voice" but I thought Pieces of You was a little wierd (it was the first one my mom played) I didn't really become interested until I went to college and a friend of mine listened to her non-stop. I really began to understand her music a little better and I learned more about her. I really admire her and all she's done. She overcame a lot to get where she is now and that is something not everyone can accomplish! Soon after this realization of mine, she came to the Twin Cities and I got tickets and was in heaven. Ever since, I have kept an eye out for anything that has to do with Jewel. Anyways, time for me to go now. Thanks for all your wonderful input and info. on Jewel, I really enjoy it! feel free to e-mail me, I'll try to write back :) Rachel rmlosleben@stthomas.edu ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 21:38:10 -0800 From: "Brandon C. Nguyen" Subject: Jewel on Karoake Disc Hello EDA's! Hope everyone is doing fine. I recently saw YWMFM, FG, and WWSYS on a Karoake Disc. I was just wondering if any angel knew if Jewel or her people actually authorized this and if so does she receive any type of compensation for this. Thanks in advance. Brandon Always an EDA ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 13:46:40 +0800 From: "Subashini" Subject: Re: How I discovered Jewel Decided to jump on the bandwagon and post my own "Jewel story", though it isn't much of a story, compared to all the rest. :) I had an e-mail friend from the US at the beginning of '96, and we both wrote back and forth to each other about our mutual love for The X-Files and David Duchovny. :) Anyway, in one of her e-mails, she mentioned going for a Jewel concert. She was raving about it, and telling me that Jewel was like the best singer alive. I remember asking her whether or not Jewel's songs were "noisy". I told her I do not like to listen to noisy singers. Ah... how little I knew then. :) Anyway, I was out shopping one day, and while at the record store, I spotted POY. I was like, "Hmmm...should I get this or not?" Bear in mind that I hadn't heard a single song from her yet. I decided to get it. Went back home, put into my Walkman, and listened to it while reading. I wasn't concentrating on the songs, and I remember thinking.."This is what she was raving about?" I thought I should give it another chance, went up to my room, and listened to it all over again. This time, I was sold. I thought that the lyrics were honest and beautiful, and the music was fresh and simple. I still do, in fact. :) I thought it was the best thing I've ever heard in my life. The angelfood that I received after that thanks to a VERY kind EDA (thanks, Leo! :) only further increased my love for Jewel's music. Living in Malaysia, I never got to see her live, but her performance on MTV Unplugged was brilliant. She's just amazing. Even now, after I've discovered even more female singer/songwriters....Jewel still remains my utmost favourite. Thank you all for even making it to the end of this mail! :) Cheerio, Subash ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 1998 00:09:48 -0700 (MST) From: Charlie Watkins Subject: How Jewel got me Some of you may have heard this from me before. I did not choose to listen to Jewel's music, I was chosen by it. From the very first little downloaded clip of You Were Meant For Me, when she sang "Dreams last for so long, even after you're gone", the haunting dream of her voice has compelled me to listen. I am a slave to the beauty of her song and ever grateful to be so. If I'm going to do this I might as well start from the beggining. I have been sick since I was three and so I am at home a lot (Especially during the winter.). During 1995 I was at home and was whatching VH1. I saw WWSYS and was instantly hooked. I didn't have any money at that time so I didn't get the tape at that time but I watched VH1 non-stop for a while which my parents hated. Well in 1996 I finally got POY. My sisters are pretty tired of hearing it over and over and now when I get in trouble(as all teenagers do at times) I'm not allowed to liten to my Jewel tape. I've never seen her in concert because of my sicknesses(When she is in town I always am sick.) except on tv. By the way I am 14 and have tried to write to Jewel but she has never responded. That's my story and I have now been on this list for about a month and love it. I know that most of you are very disturbed by the fact that Jewel only got one nomination for the Grammy's, but, lets face it - the album has been out for a couple of years now and shouldn't be up up for any grammy's in all fairness. If it were a new album or at least a never before nominated album I would understand the grumbling.......I know this sounds like Jewel bashing, but I'm not. I think her music is great. It now has a scheduled release date of the 19th January 1998. This date is also confirmed in the trade magazine Music Week. I've no idea why it's being delayed, maybe they're hoping it'll get some more radio airplay. I actually heard Foolish Games played on the radio, on Sunday, for the first time, after a long 16 month wait! I am re-offerring "Jewel Rocks the Paradise" to the list with one catch: You must be a foreign EDA. (Which to me means that you live outside of the US) I am sure many are wondering why I am doing this. I figured that the US EDAs have a tremendous advantage in seeking angelfood over the foreign EDAs. I have seen many tape offers where the dubber will exclude foreign EDAs for various reasons and I just want to give you foriegn EDAs a chance :) I, for one, cannot even imagine being outside of the US where Jewel material is not that easily obtainable. So if you are a NON-US EDA and would like to know more about how you can obtain a copy of "Jewel Rocks the Paradise" please email me back with the subject heading "INSTRUCTIONS". If you do not live outside the US please do not request a tape for I will not send you one. Don't worry..I've offerred tapes to the list many times before. I actually just finished over 120 copies of Rare Angels. After I finish this little project I will offer another tape in which ALL EDAs may participate in.
