Now i listen to the cd all= the time (i still skip over Adrian, not that i don't appreciate it..it's just that i've heard it already, and it doesn't really do much for me) my= favorite songs off the album are Painters, and Foolish Games. so that MTV= thing was in late '95?, and i've listened to her ever since. BUT i love Jewel for another reason besides her music. I am eighteen, a college freshman studying acting in chicago. i have so many things that i want to do with my life, that don't fit into= the "route" my parents planned for me, and it's really hard to have the confidence to break away from those expectations..i mean your family has = a large impact on your life. anyway when i learned about Jewel' desicion to= follow her dreams, it gave me hope..it still does...she makes me believe that maybe i could be strong enough to do that too, so i thank her, for sharing her beauty...beauty in her music, and in her life. soooooo i'm done..sorry to drag on so long...don't worry i won't post aga= in for a long time. but one last question before i go....is there anyone out= there with any angelfood, who would like to help a new member start her collection? if so please email me at = overthemoon@compuserve.com make sure you put my name (elizabeth= ) in the subject or else my roommates will delete it. so thanks for reading my story, and thanks for sharing yours , oh and if there is anyone out there who is really bored you can email me just to talk...i'm really good at responding.. thanks loves - -me ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 18:32:05 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: The 1998 Jewel calender is on sale!! Hey folks, I just wanted you to know that the price of the only official 1998 Jewel Calender has been discounted from $12.00 to $7.00 and it's available ONLY at the official Jewel website! :) For you new folks on the list, the official Jewel web page has been online since early November. It's full of info on Jewel, upcoming tour and TV appearance info, a really neat "scrapbook" section with rare photos from important events in Jewel's career, a "Centerstage" area which highlights recent Jewel happenings and of course the Jewel Store. Please note that the Jewel Store is the only place right now where you can get *official* Jewel merchandise, including the above mentioned calender, three posters, a pretty nifty glossy lyric book, a 5-picture pack and eight t-shirts (including a new one that wasn't there when the site was launched). All this can be found on the official Jewel web page at: http://www.jeweljk.com Also, when the site was launched, it's creator (Bibi, Jewel's Creative Director) said that she would start working on a catalog that could be ordered so folks who cannot access web sites would be able to order merchandise through the mail. At this moment I don't know the status of this catalog, but I will ask her soon :) Mike :) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 18:50:07 EST From: Russgram Subject: Re: NJC: how I got into Jewel hello angels, I''ve been on this list for about a month now. I would also like to share my story of how i discovered Jewel. In some music strores they have headphones which allow the buyer to listen to new music. I was in one of these stores and saw this artist named Jewel in the box. i thoght to myself this is different, and i picked it up and began to listen to it. right away i liked her voice but i resisted the temptation to buy it because i am always buying cd's and then never listen to them. Anyway, i left the store but in a week or two i went back and listened again. I immediately decided to buy it, although i had no idea who she was (this was way before she got on the radio). So anyway, i bought the cd and have never regretted it. it's my favorite one. this was all the way back in early '96. i've loved Jewel ever since. i would have been on this list a whole lot longer than only a month but i just got my computer days before subscribing. i'm so happy to have you guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks for your time, melissa s. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 19:22:44 EST From: HRENB Subject: SJC: 1997 comments, Newbies need adoption?, Random Notes, blahblah! Hey all, whats up? Just got back from 3 weeks in freezing Chicago to find over 600 emails in my box! After plowing through them for 2 hours I'm ready to write. Quick intro on me- Barry- about Jewel's age, live in Los Angeles for about 6 months now. Im a writer/ actor/ musician/ poet and most time temp agency worker ha ha. Broke but happy by the ocean. :). I've been on the list since about October of 96 I guess, so kind of an old timer. Anyways after getting much done over the holidaze, I have a bit of time to adopt 3 or 4 newbies, answer questions, make some tapes, etc- drop a line if interested. I also still have 2 copies of POY vinyl if anyones interested- 20 bucks (that includes postage and padding). Umm... 1997 Jewel Highlights/ Lowlights The Good- 1. Chicago Theater 3/20/97- Awesome show, met her after, was VERY nice to everyone 2. Hospitality Point 9/20/97- Hometown Crowd- Venue was amazing-heavenly music under starry skies- show rocked- (never seen such raw open emotion in a performer as at the end of Foolish Games that night) 3. The Thanksgiving surprise appearence at Java Joes- I missed it (I thought she would pop up there too for some reason but couldnt go :() Very cool way to thank her die hard angels. The Not So Good- 1. The New Years eve gig (Wasn't there but think nuff has been said on this one) 2. Saturday Night Live appearance- She's so much more powerful singing alone than with a band (or at least that band that night) Decent musicians- but the jazzy sax solo in WWSYS? What was that?! Could barely recognize the song. 3. Opening for Dylan 12/17/ 97- Like the New Years gig- a spirited performance but bad crowd/ venue didn't seem that great. Just a few humble opinions- pls dont send a lot of disagreements ha ha. Well enough ramblin from me for now. Best wishes to all in 1998 and thanks Jewel for being one of the few saviors of souls out there. I have never met Jewel or seen her in concert. But i'm sure that she is one of the kindest musicians around. I have read the posts about Jewel being a premadonna, I'm sure she is letting her fame get to her head a little, but you have to figure that she has had a tough life and now that she is famous she has the right to act like shes something special. This is just a phase , she will return to her sweet self in time.well i'm sure your all bored now!! luv you all ~Katrina The Lost Angel ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jan 98 20:48:03 EST From: Jeffrey Kokosinski Subject: Dance Between Two Women I just thought Id comment on some remaarks made about Dance Between Two Women. Personally, I think it is a good y)song. I don't think that you have to write in an overly-complex key with crazy chords to write a good song. Jewel is not slipping, she just wrote in the ky of G, forgive her already!! I don't think Dylan was slipping when he wrote Visions of Johanna or Knockin on Heaven's Door or the Times they are a Changin', all pretty basic songs with basic chords. You can have your opinion. Im not trashing anyone's opinion, but I just wanted to stick up for the song. Hello my fellow people, I was wondering... if any of you guys out there live in the Atlanta/Cobb district. I have always been curious if any EDA's lived near me. Not many of my friends are really into Jewel's music, so I don't know any Georgian EDA's. So this is a shout out for all you Atlantan EDA's out there to please email me and maybe we could converse. =D Sarah ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 21:12:11 EST From: Kalen81 Subject: NJC: how I got into jewel :) Yeah, the peer pressure caught on. I guess Everyone needs to know that it's been almost two years this march since i first saw her video on MTV, and with it being spring break at the time, I saw it 3-4 times in a week. So I figured this girl was calling to me, trying to send me some sort of message, so I went to the brand new Target and spent my 12 bucks on it. Since then, I've seen her twice in concert, I think she's been to Raleigh maybe three times. I collect performances of hers from tv, which are all equally beautiful :) And last November when I was in new York, i stopped in Virgin's Megastore and bought the LP... Anyways, there's my two cents worth... So I was out on the net looking for Jewel page;s and stumbled across"EDA'S" The thought click in my mind!!!!!! Thats what my friends are in. I didn't even see the original post this reply is to, but it sounds like someone thought this song might not be up to Jewel's usual standards, if I read it correctly. There's a very good reason for that, which may be of interest. "Dance Between Two Woman" is one of the very first songs Jewel ever wrote back when she was in high school at Interlochen Academy. It's part of the batch of first attempts at songwriting Jewel made while there. At the time, she & her friend Marie Beer (who's in that famous controversy provoking yearbook photo where Jewel is spelled "Juel") recorded their first ever demos. "Dance Between Two Woman" is among them. This is quite some time before any of the songs on POY (other than "Don't") were even written, let alone the massive amount since then! So that's why it sounds much less seasoned than most other material. Hope that helps put the song in perspective a bit. Odds are she turned it down because the nature of that character is diametrically opposed to many of Jewel's philosophies. She looks quite similar to Heather Graham who does play Rollergirl I think, especially in the body types. Also, the part required nudity and I have a feeling Jewel wouldn't want to do a role that required nudity or heavy sex and violence scenes as did the role of Rollergirl in Boogie Nights. Just my honest guess. The other stuff quickly started to accumulate dust and hasn't stopped. as opposed to the other stories i've been reading, i suddenly fell in love with everything on the album, partly because i had been listening to the tonight tonight single and liked the concept of an cd which stayed within the same genre. I have 5 jewel cd's now and i am a complete Jewel addict, but maybe i shouldn't admit it, because admiting it is the first step to recovery...
