I can't really remeber what month it was or where I was when I first heard WWSYS but I do remember a few things.. I remember seeing an add on VH1 for a show called VH1 Duets and they were going to feature Melissa Etheridge which I'm not a huge fan of but thought I'd check it out anyway because I liked some of her songs. They also listed off some guests that were going to be on and I had heard of Joan Osborne since she was real popular then and I'd heard of Jewel but didnt' know anything about her. I hadn't even heard of Paula Cole and Sophie B. Hawkins then. Anyway I watched it and thought hey this Jewel is pretty good and left it at that. That I believe aired in 1995 sometime. Then I saw Jay Leno once and sure enough here was this Jewel dressed in some kind of fringed Indian looking attire belting out WWSYS I thought wow that's a good song. Then I noticed her video for that song being played a lot on MTV and VH1 which was in 1996 sometime whenever she was on Leno. I heard WWSYS so much I fell in love with the song and ended up buying POY and like most didn't like all the songs so I filed it away for awhile. Then YWMFM came out and I was hooked all over again. I listened to those songs from POY and Little Sister over and over. I eventually came to this list in July of 1997. And now like most I am a very dedicated fan of Jewel's and have had pretty good luck expanding my angelfood collection. I'm sorry this is long but too bad cuz I already said it. Johnson" Subject: VH1 Duets, and the turquoise ring just a few quick questions: 1. Was this Duets show with Melissa Ethridge Jewel's first TV appearance, or was Wiz of Oz made and/or shown before it? 2. Did VH1 ever do any other Duets shows? It seems like a great format, especially for up-and-coming artists. 3. Does anyone know anything about the turquoise ring that Jewel has worn on a number of different occasions? (lemme guess, is it a communications device so that she can communicate with the other members of the Alaskan/Canadian alliance, thus making their task of world domination easier? :o) ) I know that that last one may seem like a trivial bit of info that doesn't have anything to do with me, but that is waht makes me/us fans (fanatics) :o). Anyways, have a great day, everyday! Jay the equilateral try-angel that has had too many Mt. Neither was her first "national" TV appearance, she was on Conan O'Brien in May of 1995 and I'm not sure if *that* was her first national show. Anyway, VH1 Duets was taped on October 10th, 1995 (the SAME day she shot the original You Were Meant For Me video, directed by Sean Penn) and the Wizard Of Oz was taped on November 5th, 1995. I know the Wizard Of Oz first aired on TNT on Thanksgiving night that year (November 23rd) and if memory serves, I think the VH1 Duets show first aired the very day before, on the 22nd. The answers to many similar questions along the lines of "when Jewel appeared where" can be answered at the Jewel Performance Chronology page on Adam Longfellows' Pieces Of Jewel page at http://jewel.zoonation.com It's got info on nearly every single live-concert/TV/radio performance she's done from 1994 on. (My days are running together now that I'm nearing the end of my winter break.) I've been a Jewel fan for quite a while, though, since I first heard WWSYS on the radio. (I remember sitting in the car, waiting to pick Mom up from work, and I heard that snazzy li'l guitar intro.) Anyway, the radio stations totally overplay songs here, but they played WWSYS to the extent that I went out and bought the CD after hearing only that song, and no others from her yet. (The first time I had -ever- done that with CDs.) Of course, since then, I have bought a few more CDs after hearing only one song, since I liked Jewel's music so much. Hrm...I just got an acoustic guitar for X-mas, so I'm attempting to teach myself to play. Reading music isn't bad at all, since I've had music basically bred into me (played piano starting age 5, 'cello age 9), as I'm now 19. I'm at the University of Iowa, majoring in Communication Studies, minoring in English and German, and getting an International Business Certificate. I hope to work in the music industry someday. :) I joined this list after someone cross-posted something onto the Sarah McLachlan list from here. (I've been on that list for 2-3 months now.) Needless to say, my mailbox is constantly overflowing with new mail. :) (I love feelin' loved and gettin' mail.) ;) Jewel's music, as Sarah's music, has touched me in ways I cannot even begin to describe. That's part of the reason I got the guitar. I want to learn how to play a bit better (ok, much much better), and start composing music again. The last piece I wrote was back in 1992, so it's been basically 5 1/2 years. I have the creative juices flowing again, and am working on getting things started up again. *nodnodnodnodnod* We can all dream, can't we? Anyway, I look forward to staying on this list forever, as well as bettering my homepage (which I'm not going to give the URL out for yet, since it's rather pathetic right now). I will say that it will have Jewel and Sarah content, as well as other schtuff. ;) Um...yeah...that's all for now. The Confused Angel, or something like that... I have to say that I loved Jewel instantly ever since WWSYS. I finally bought POY right after YWMFM came out. Yes, like almost everyone, it took me a while to enjoy the other songs on the album. But, once I heard her story, I realized where most of these songs were coming from, and I liked them for the meanings they hold. FG has always been my favorite long before I bought POY. (It's on side two of my YWMFM single.) I guess the number one reason why I like Jewel is because she is a very strong role model for young developing artists. I also love her poetry and lyrics. They each hold a special meaning. My favorite poem so far is entitiled "Criticism". It's on POY. Well, I hope everyone benefits from the messages she sends. Have a Happy New Year and God Bless. :-) Lisa (JeepChik00) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Jan 98 13:04:38 CST From: "Jay C. Johnson" Subject: NJC: Iowa and Midwest EDAs Hey all. I'm 18, and am currently attending the University of Missouri, Rolla. During the *very small amount of* time when I don't have to study, I enjoy playing chess, AD&D, Magic: the Gathering, the Mind's Eye Theatre edition of Werewolf: the Apocalypse, and helping other Sloungers test out new games. (A Slounger is anyone who regularly hangs out in the South lounge at TJ Hall, the dorm where I live.) Now for the important stuff about me. This is mostly my girlfriend, an exchange student from Korea named Hyun Mi. Hyun Mi is the most beautiful girl in the whole world, (insert the rest of that stuff that you know I'm going to say but that you really don't want to read 150 pages of here.) With that part taken care of, the only other noteworthy thing about me that you can't figure out from my angel name is that I have Muscular Dystrophy. Except for having to mess with stairs and other things that I don't like, I stopped caring about this when it became obvious that I know more about MD than the doctors do. For anyone who hasn't noticed yet, this is why medical science is so slow in advancing. Some doctor spent millions of dollars to go to school so that he could study MD for 5 yyears, so his 5 years of study by definition is worth more than my 18 years of study that I got just by having bad luck, and my knowledge isn't worth anything if he says so. Enough of that s@i#, here's how I got to be an EDA. I first heard Jewel on the radio in mid February of last year. (it was YWMFM if anyone cares) I decided I liked the song, and spent the next 2 months tracking down a copy of POY. It took about 5 months after that before I found the EDA list, because we had 1 computer and 6 people who wanted to use it, so it wasn't until I moved away to college that I actually had tme to search the net for nonessental material. I stumbled across the new member guide looking for Jewel stuff, read the FAQ , and signed up. I didn't leave anything worthwhile from that post to lead into a good sign off, so this is what you get instead, Palantir the Trekkeer Angel 0:P ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Jan 1998 13:06:15 -0600 (CST) From: mcg@umr.edu Subject: re: New Zealand POY Would anyone in New Zealand be willing to help me get the POY with the bonus disc attached to it?
